As I was listening to an on-line program from a European radio station today, I heard a report about a new photo-sharing program called Snapchat. This program allows users to send messages (including photographs) which self-delete within a time period established by the sender typically several seconds.
Snapchat was initially considered to be something of a solution to the problem of sexting, where young people take unclothed photos of themselves to send to someone, simply to have the photographs inadvertently forwarded to others.
Sadly, Snapchat actually offers no such option.

When discussing naturism and naturism, we don't talk about (or to) naturist girls very much. We discuss a lot about how many naturists are of an old generation, and there's an urgent have to get younger people involved. We talk about quite young children, and are usually in agreement that naturism isn't harmful to them at all. But we don't talk about adolescents particularly those who are 13 to 17 years of age.
A documentary like My Daughter the Teenage Nudist is about as close as we have gotten. While the movie is great and normally depicts naturism in a positive light for young folks, it is important to note that the people in the film not the least of which will be the teen daughter mentioned in the title are 18 years or older, making them legally adults practically everywhere on the planet.
Legally is the key word here, because I believe it is the key to understanding why we do not particularly address naturism for teens. Since nudity is so broadly equated with sex, we understand we can start getting into a problem place once we begin to blend the two below the age of 18. In the current society people jump to the conclusion that that if an individual is unclothed anywhere near a person below a certain age who is not their child, then that individual is guilty of participating in sexual acts with a minor until proven innocent.
So does this mean that we shouldn't talk about adolescents and naturism? Or that we shouldn't talk TO them about it? I hope not. We understand what the choice is. The misunderstanding and outright persecution of nudity, often tied in with slut-shaming, among teenagers has generated intimidation and suicide.
There was the recent instance of Amanda Toddwho was manipulated, blackmailed and shunned by her peers for revealing her breasts on a webcam. We have to determine a way to address this age group regarding the balanced expression of naturism.
To begin this discussion, I believe it's important to understand two things (which most naturists are likely to agree with). The first is that young folks are capable of understanding that nudity can be nonsexual. Shooting a bare photo of oneself and sending it to someone else does not have to be sexual in nature.
I also understand that if I Had had access to a modern day smartphone or digital camera, I likely would have taken photos of myself unclothed. Would I 've sent them to anyone? The 30-something me says no, but recalling the 14-year old mewell, who knows?
And now we have this amazing digital research and communication tool called the internet, which crosses the world and appears to include quite literally everything anyone would want to understand about any possible subject. If only the net had existed when I was 13 - my head reels at the chance for having been able to figure out what naturism is and join with other naturists much before than I did.
The difficulty now, nevertheless, is the phrase nude adolescent and occasionally even "Naturist Teen" is internet-talk for child pornography.
Typing click for teens or naturism for teens or another phrase containing forms of the words naked and adolescent into Google will return loads of search results, but nothing close to what we might consider good information about naturism.
Accessibility to electronic communication apparatus with built in cameras and photo services for example Snapchat, consequently, provide adolescents with what for many of them is likely their only outlet to engage in bare behavior.
Assuming they failed to grow up in a naturist family (which applies to most adolescents), any given teen probably lacks the skill to go where most naturists congregate private resorts and legal naked beaches. For one thing, most private naturist resorts is not going to admit unaccompanied minors for various reasons. Additionally, most adolescents under the age of 16 can't drive.
If they are able to somehow get to some publicly-reachable unclothed space, they may not (and likely shouldn't) go alone. This brings up the notion of attempting to talk about naturism with friends so that you can locate a partner to go with. Most amateurs probably find this notion frightening also, and given the stigma of being a naturist, they likely don't know of a relative or friend who could accompany them either.
What exactly are we naturists to do? It is a shame that we aren't addressing this age group. They truly are going through a vital period in their physical and psychological growth, in which they may be forming lots of views about their bodies many of that will survive for decades in the future. We understand that some of those teenagers will finally become practicing naturists and naturists. They are the future of the movement, but right now they are being told that nudity is bad. And the propagating of bare pictures via sexting is not helping the issue.
It seems to me that there is an enormous information vacuum that needs to be filled. If there are great naturism resources specifically for teenagers out there somewhere, I haven't been able to find them. One action item I might propose is gathering a free downloadable guide to naturism especially for girls, giving some outlines regarding what they could and can not do (or should not do). It could also provide links to great blogs and web sites that positively portray naturism, which would help teens prevent the packed internet forest consisting of porn sites that masquerade as naturism / nudism websites.
I do not really have any responses beyond that. The main objective of this site posting would be to get the discussion started.
