There's a scene halfway through Young Royals where Prince Wilhelm calls Simon up while drunk, telling him that everything's fake, "But I like you and that is not fake."
For a show that revolves around a teen prince trying to find himself in boarding school, it's remarkable how real Netflix's latest offering feels, especially compared to other teen shows of this ilk.
Given all the privilege on display, you'd be forgiven for assuming that Young Royals is just the Swedish version of Élite or Gossip Girl. But instead, your new teen obsession shares far more in common with Skam, another Scandinavian drama that portrays teenage life with some much-needed authenticity.
The casting is key to this. Like Generation, a criminally underrated show on HBO Max, Young Royals has cast actors who actually look the age they're supposed to be playing. Characters like Prince Wilhelm don't have clear skin or perfect hair, and no one in the cast is overly attractive in the way that teens shows almost exclusively like to portray.
In fact, the ridiculous abs seen in the likes of Riverdale are almost entirely absent from Hillerska Boarding School. Wilhelm, Simon and all their peers look like someone you might actually meet in real life, even if they are attending a posh boarding school. And even when someone is more trained, like Malte Gårdinger (who plays August), he still sports a physique that is actually attainable – and it makes sense, given his character's love of rowing.

Generation co-creator Daniel Barnz told us that through working with his teenage daughter, he came to realise that casting older people in roles like this can "send potentially damaging messages to teenagers... Because their bodies look like bodies that you could never have." And given that unrealistic casting is still the norm in teenage shows, it's no wonder that one in three UK teenagers are ashamed of their bodies (according to a Mental Health Foundation survey reported on by The Guardian).

Of course, the rise of social media has played a key role in this too, but regardless, it's still refreshing to see age-appropriate actors cast in teenage shows. And crucially, Young Royals also extends this approach to the storytelling itself.
Despite their fabulous wealth and privilege, the students who attend Hillerska don't skip class to have orgies or solve crimes or even fight bears. Yes, Wilhelm is a prince, and in many ways, Young Royals can be seen as an updated version of the classic Cinderella story, but both he and Simon are forced to deal with plenty of far more relatable problems too, including alcoholism and grief.
Where Young Royals excels most though is when it comes to the central romance between Wilhelm and Simon. There are no grand gestures here, no boombox declarations or romantic ferris wheel rides. Instead, the pair just fall in love like most of us did at that age, with coy smiles and secret glances, with cute hand-holding and stolen kisses.
Of course, that's all complicated a bit by the fact that Simon is openly gay while Wilhelm is trapped in a closet of the crown's making. But even then, Young Royals doesn't fall into the usual LGBTQ+ tropes that plague so many stories like this. And just by centring a queer relationship, the show instantly sets itself apart from the vast majority of its peers.
Five seasons in, Riverdale still struggles to get its queer characters on equal footing with its straight leads, and while Élite is far better in this regard, everything the LGBTQ+ characters do in that show is still hyper-sexualised to an unrealistic degree.
There are sex scenes in Young Royals too, but these are far more awkward, and we mean that in the best way possible. At times, the pair are a bit uncomfortable together and at other points, they're just super horny. Crucially, that's far more accurate than the stylised sex scenes we're used to seeing on shows that supposedly capture the teen experience on screen.

When's the last time you saw two characters make fun of each other's morning breath? And when's the last time you saw someone turn up the volume on their video game so their mum can't hear them have sex? Scenes like this might not appear often on TV, but they sure do happen a lot in real life.
Like Generation and Sex Education, Young Royals is part of a new wave that aims to depict sex on screen in all of its messy splendour — and with actors who actually look the part. Because real life isn't like a movie. Sometimes you laugh during sex. Sometimes you might bump your head by accident. Unless you sport a buzzcut, your hair never stays perfectly in place.
By sidestepping the realities of sex with actors who are clearly not teens, other shows like Élite and Riverdale risk putting pressure on young viewers who feel they must somehow live up to these unattainable standards. And that's one of the biggest reasons why we've fallen for Young Royals. Because in a world where adults play teenagers and sex is shot like a perfume ad, this show feels admirably real, just like Wilhelm's feelings for Simon.
