How Terrorism and Islamophobia Take a Mental Toll on Muslims

In the aftermaths of the Paris attacks , there are widespread reports of anti-Muslim hate crimes across the world — an eerie reminder of how dark the world became the days after September 11th. Social media has taken the lead in establishing discussions about the War on Terror, the history of French colonial occupation in Africa and the Middle East, radicalized Islamophobia in Western societies, and what many seem to think is a disregard for non-Western lives in Lebanon and Iraq. However, there’s one overlooked conversation critical to the series of terrorist attacks across the globe: mental illness.
Before we talk about what can be done to alleviate mental illness within Muslim communities, it’s important to understand why it matters — especially to the greater global community.
Most Muslims immigrate into developed western countries to escape from torture, war, and rise in terrorism attacks in their homeland — as we have seen is the case with three million Syrians refugees — already suffering from potential post-traumatic stress disorder cases. But as an increase of refugees entering Europe leads to racial tension and fear over terrorism threats, anti-immigration commentators place the blame on Muslims for refusing to assimilate into Western society.
However, government social policies (directly impacted by the institutionalized racism evident in European countries) have already made assimilation a difficult feat by isolating Muslim immigrants in suburban slums with inadequate schools and high unemployment rates. These failed policies and the rise of anti-Muslim sentiments extend the social segregation into a new generation of Western-born Muslims feeling far more isolated than their own parents. These young Muslims are European-born, but aren’t treated as such, breeding mental health issues from depression to PTSD. In turn, it leaves young French Muslims with little to no chances of social progress, and a distinct disdain for authority, which contributes to the high incarceration rate of Muslims in French prisons — between 60% and 70% of all French prisoners when they make up only slightly more than 10% of the population.
According to a 2012 Norwegian study , Muslims are fully aware of their devalued position in society from the near constant social dehumanization taking place in their native European or Western societies. Furthermore, a 2011 study by the American Psychology Association , found that 82% of Muslim Americans felt unsafe after 9/11 signaling a “predictor for PTSD.” Now, more than ever, Muslims need to seek out medical treatment and counseling, but there’s still a heavy stigma associated with mental illness. The concept of mental illness is still a taboo topic for Muslims — some of it stemming from culture — and they often treat disorders as fixable by prayer or reading verses from the Qu’ran. There’s also a cultural barrier in the medical world when it comes to treating mental illness in certain communities, and non-Muslim medical professionals might have a harder time understanding what's at stake for the Muslim community or might make suggestions from a perspective that views Islam in a negative light. But when mental disorders go untreated, it leaves the individual suffering from them in a vulnerable state. That's what many Muslims around the world have been grappling with for many years now. Couple that with recruiting season for the Islamic State, and you're left with a whole lot of trouble.
As anti-Muslim sentiments continue to skyrocket and bombs continue to drop in the Middle East, more Muslims — who already feel marginalized — are suffering through an identity crisis and mental health disorders that make them more susceptible for recruitment by terrorist organizations. When the majority of victims from ISIS attacks are Muslim, it doesn’t make sense for the organization to be so successful in recruiting them. But for the Charlie Hebdo shooters — Saïd and Chérif Kouachi — who were Parisian-born sons of an Algerian mother (she committed suicide when they were young), all they saw were Muslims being killed by western countries . Although they were irreligious and felt isolated from both the French and Algerian communities before being manipulated during recruitment, the one thing they could identify with was being Muslim. And so far, in the past 30 years, the United States has killed about one million Muslims. We don’t see a war against the West — we see a war against Muslims.
It’s also not just terrorist organizations like the Islamic State that actively seek out mentally ill and economically poor Muslims. Government agencies like the FBI do too. In 2009, for example, the FBI arrested Laguerre Payen, a low-income black Muslim with mental illness, for plotting to shoot down military airplanes and bomb a synagogue in the Bronx. However, what’s not well-known to the public is that the FBI provided Laguerre and three others with the terrorism plot, fake weapons, and the money . FBI sting operations, like this one in particular, have gone on for years, and without much public opposition. More importantly, they do nothing to suppress terrorism threats here or abroad, but rather create them in our own neighborhoods.
How do we stop the madness? Aside from pressuring governments to make meaningful changes to their social and foreign policies, there are two things an individual can do to make an impact. First, initiate discussions on and eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness. With rates of depression among Muslim Americans rising since 9/11 , it’s imperative for the Muslim American community to discuss the effects of bullying, Islamophobia, media’s perceptions of Muslims, and discrimination. The effects on the mental health of the Muslim communities are compounding; we need to act now. They need to be able to seek medical help and support groups, and there need to be support groups for them to go to, preferably one that’s Muslim run.
But more importantly, let’s all make an effort to stop the cycle of hate. It only begets more violence. A young 7-year-old Muslim girl should never feel like she can’t tell people she’s a Muslim. It's the same thing I felt I was forced to do when I was the same age in 2001 after 9/11. The public outpouring of kindness, acceptance, and love defeats the bad guys from winning every time — so let's focus on that. It’ll get us closer to a more peaceful society.
