IT IS the first question any parent asks after the birth of their child: is it a girl or a boy? In rare cases the midwife has to say honestly: "I don't know."
There are babies born who, left to grow up without medical intervention, will be both and neither. They have been called hermaphrodites, pseudohermaphrodites and intersex children, but doctors now prefer to speak of sex development disorders, because a disorder can often be put right.
Mismatched chromosomes ... Marlene Dietrich is thought to have suffered from intersex disorder.
These children do not have to live their lives in a state of sexual ambiguity. If the condition is identified early enough they can be given help to grow up with a specifically male or female body. In the past such babies were sometimes subjected to surgery verging on the brutal. Others will never have been detected or will have chosen to go without medical help with little chance of ever having a child themselves.
Some, particularly those called "over-virilised" women, may have sporting potential because of their unusual strength.
At the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 eight female athletes failed sex tests but were cleared on appeal, and seven of them were found to have physically developed as neither fully female nor male.
Preliminary medical tests on South African Caster Semenya , the athlete at the centre of a gender row after she won the 800 metres final in the recent world athletics championships in Berlin, reportedly showed triple the normal female level of testosterone in her body. But such high levels do not necessarily point to drug taking as testosterone levels can vary widely.
Wiebke Arlt, professor of medicine at Birmingham University, says the question of which is the most appropriate sex when a child is born is relatively straightforward.
All of us have 23 pairs of chromosomes, including the pair which, in most cases, decides our sex. Either we have what they call 46XX and are female or 46XY and are male. But sometimes there is a mismatch between the body's male and female hormones and those key chromosomes. Sometimes this can be corrected so that the chromosomes decide the sex, but sometimes it cannot and the hormones have to prevail.
One of the more common disorders, but which occurs in only one in 15,000 births, has made great beauties of women who technically were born male.
There has been speculation that actors Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo had this disorder, though the rumours could easily be explained by people's discomfort with their androgynous appearance.
People with this disorder have chromosomes that are 46XY, and they have male hormones, but those hormones cannot act because of a mutation in the protein to which they are supposed to bind. "They would look and behave like a girl," Arlt said. "Many models and film stars have this disorder. They are very tall and slender featured, very beautiful with peachy skin. They usually find out because their period doesn't start. They do not have a uterus: the vagina ends blind. They have testicles in the abdomen which must be removed or they can become cancerous. They can't bear children but are completely female."
Yet these women have XY chromosomes. If sex testing were limited to chromosomes, they would be declared male.
At the other end of the spectrum are those who are 46XX and should be female, but have too much male hormone because of a deficiency of the stress hormone, cortisol, which should keep it in check. Someone with this condition, called congenital adrenal hyperplasia, "may look on the outside like a boy", Arlt said, "but once a month they may have blood in their urine.
Usually someone with this condition would be assigned a female identity, but Arlt has seen such patients who were raised as boys and are now middle-aged men with families. Hormones are key to sex, but levels vary, as does a person's ability to gain muscle. Those things are in the genes. "There will always be women who are more muscular and have more male movement," Arlt said. It doesn't mean they are men.

Lady Gaga dared to bare at the beach in Miami, Florida on Wednesday.
The pop star, 31, looked cool and confident in a small bikini while posing in the sand in a photo she posted on Instagram — donning a triangle top made of metal strings and a matching bikini bottom over a white thong.
While the daring bikini was head-turning enough, the star wore the look with a pair of strappy high heel sandals – not the easiest of footwear to walk over the sand with.
She completed the look with a sheer black shawl with gold detailing on the edges, a circular gold necklace and sunglasses.
“From the woods for Thanksgiving to the beach for Tour in Miami!” she wrote in the caption. “#beyourself #ladygaga #beachwear #JoanneWorldTourMiami Bienvenidos a Miami!”
Later, Gaga shared a second photograph showing off her toned derrière, writing, “Call me Princess Peach 🍑 #ladygaga #JoanneWorldTourMiami.”

Gaga isn’t exactly the biggest fan of practical dressing. In June, the “Born This Way” singer went hiking and opted for an all-black ensemble composed of a one-shoulder ruffled and knotted crop-top paired with a fitted black maxi skirt with a flared and slightly ruffled bottom.
She completed the look with nude high heels while walking on the gravely, dirt road.
Gaga’s had iconic fashion moments in the past, including her meat dress , her outfit composed entirely out of decapitated Kermit the Frog heads and once attended the Grammys ensconced in a giant dinosaur egg .

This 14-Year-Old Transgender Girl’s Video Is Going Viral for the Best Reason
It’ll make you cry, and then cheer.
The young person’s guide to conquering (and saving) the world. Teen Vogue covers the latest in celebrity news, politics, fashion, beauty, wellness, lifestyle, and entertainment.
Corey Maison is happy now, but fifth grade was a nightmare for her. When she was younger, Corey was bullied by her classmates to the point where one even told her that if she killed herself, no one would care. At 14, though, Corey found happiness and new friends all because her family and her new school accept her as a transgender girl.
In a now-viral video , Corey is posted in the girls’ bathroom at her new school, holding up note cards that track her transition from bullied and sad to happy and glowing.
This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.
Corey shows in her video that she never fit in with her peers when she was younger. She was shunned by girls and teased by boys, and even laughed at by adults later on.
“I felt so stupid. Like a freak,” Corey’s notes say. “Like a misfit.”
Eventually, the bullying got so bad that her parents pulled her out of public school and opted to home school her instead.
That’s when Corey’s mom did something that changed everything.
“One day my mom told me to come watch something online,” the video says. "It was a documentary about a girl named Jazz Jennings . She was a beautiful girl...that had been born a boy!! I said to my mom, ‘OMG, I’m just like her, I AM a girl!!’”
That’s when Corey realized that there was nothing wrong with her, she’s transgender. At 14, Corey started taking hormones to transition into a female, a day she described as the best of her life.
Now, Corey is happy and back in public school. This time, though, she’s at a school where her peers and teachers accept her. She plays on the girls’ soccer team and uses the girls’ bathroom , just as she should.
This acceptance is so important. Though 41% of transgender people will attempt suicide at some point in their lives, we know that support and love from their community can help prevent that. Even though Corey overcame a lot at a young age, she’s found happiness and love from those around her. That's the message that Corey passes along to other transgender kids who might see the video: someday it will get better and you can live your best life as your true self, just like Corey is doing now.

An Australian model who was born with a penis and vagina has kickstarted a modelling career despite being bullied mercilessly at school.
Sophia Young, born in Nowra on the south coast of NSW, was only eight-years-old when she started feeling pain in her pelvic area, and doctors soon discovered her ovaries were positioned abnormally, with one being much higher than the other.
As she got older, both reproductive organs developed, but her penis became so large that her parents stopped raising her as a girl, and changed her name to Harrison.
An Australian model who was born with a penis and vagina has kickstarted a modelling career despite being bullied mercilessly at school
'I want to get rid of all the male parts so I can have a sense of normality'
'I have a vagina, uterus and ovaries, but my clitoris is so oversized it looked like a penis. You can't tell what it is, but it has no function and I can't have kids,' she told Daily Mail Australia.
'I want to get rid of all the male parts so I can have a sense of normality.'
Now 22, Ms Young hopes to earn enough money as a model to fund her genital correction surgery and is in the process of changing her legal name from Harrison to Sophia.
Before she entered the modelling industry, Ms Young, who was initially raised as a girl in the regional NSW city of Wagga Wagga, was constantly bullied, suspended 11 times and kicked out of various schools, before dropping out in Year 11.

'I got suspended a lot at school and bullied lots, it was really bad.'
Ms Young had Asperger's syndrome and didn't start walking or talking until the age of five or six.
'I was a slow developer, I didn't get on well, I got bullied and teased so much that I used to isolate myself so much from kids in the playground that I became a loner and the other kids viewed me as strange,' she told Daily Mail Australia.
'I punched a kid in the face, broke school property, twisted school laptops because I was bottling up my pain, I was always really angry.'
As she got older, both reproductive organs developed, but her penis became so large that her parents stopped raising her as a girl, and changed her name to Harrison
From 2003 to 2011, Ms Young attended various preparatory and public schools in NSW before eventually dropping out after falling behind on assessments, despite wanting to finish the HSC.
'My mum originally wanted me to go to special education school but I refused because all the kids copped a lot of flack, and I didn't want to be treated just like the way they were. I want to get the same privileges as everyone else.'
Ms Young told Daily Mail Australia that the relentless bullying she endured resulted in six suicide attempts.
'I tried to shoot myself but the gun didn't work and tried to overdose on Ritalin,' she said.
'I have a vagina, uterus and ovaries, but my clitoris is so oversized it looked like a penis. You can't tell what it is, but it has no function and I can't have kids,' she told Daily Mail Australia
In 2014, Ms Young moved to Sydney and was only 21 when she was thrown into the modelling world.
'One of my friends told me I looked pretty interesting and that I should start to model but I didn't think much of it as I was very rough on the outside and have a big, blunt personality unlike most models.'
Despite being signed to various modelling agencies, Ms Young told Daily Mail Australia that it has been difficult finding gigs.
'Every company or client is looking for either a male or female, but if you're both they don't want it,' she said.
'Inter-sex and androgynous models are still considered taboo in the industry.'
Now 22, Ms Young hopes to earn enough money as a model to fund her genital correction surgery and is in the process of changing her legal name from Harrison to Sophia
Ms Young said the only reason she started modelling in the first place was to fund her genital correction surgery, which costs up to $60,000 in Australia.
The lack of modelling jobs available prompted her to start a Go Fund Me page to raise money for the corrective procedure, where she received almost $500 in donations.
On Saturday night, however, Ms Young removed the page and refunded everyone.
'I didn't want to feel like I was sponging off other people. I took it down because I feel guilty for taking money from people that work hard for it, I want to try get the money through modelling,' she told Daily Mail Australia.
But Ms Young said she doesn't want to be a model forever, and eventually wants find a 'real' job.
