You probably know that breasts come in all different sizes and colors , but did you know the same goes for nipples? Actually, there are eight different kinds of nipples, says Dr. Tsippora Shainhouse, M.D. , a board-certified dermatologist and pediatrician. All of them are normal, and it's certainly possible to have a combination of two or more types (like protruding and bumpy or flat and hairy). And maybe, your nipples don't exactly fit into any of these categories. That's cool too! All nipples are normal, no matter how big, small, flat, or hairy they may be. Read on to learn more about what kind of nipples you have.
First, though, some definitions. You most likely have heard the terms nipple and areola, but there's a chance you don't know exactly what they mean. The two of them together make up what you might refer to as your nipple. The areola is the pigmented round area on your breast, while the nipple is the actual projection. Got it? OK, now let's dive in.
Protruding: This refers to nipples that are raised a few millimeters above the surface of the areola and point outwards. The nipple can harden and become more pronounced when cold or stimulated.
Flat: The entire nipple is flat and blends into the areola. The nipple can harden and become more pronounced when cold or stimulated.
Puffy: The entire areola and nipple area looks like a small, raised mound on top of the breast. The nipple can harden and become more pronounced when cold or stimulated.
Inverted: The nipple retracts inwards. Sometimes, you can use your fingers to bring it out, but sometimes, the muscles are too tight.
Unilateral inverted: One nipple is raised, the other is inverted. If this has always been the case, it's perfectly safe. If this is a new development, it might be a sign of breast cancer, so see your doctor immediately.
Bumpy: It's common to have bumps on the areola surrounding the nipple. These bumps are called Montgomery glands and can sometimes look like whiteheads. Sometimes, you might be able to squeeze dead skin cells out of them, but don't play with them. Every woman has the glands, but some people are bumpier than others.
Hairy: Stray, dark hairs growing out of the areola area are normal. They might be fine or coarse. It's safe to pluck them out with a tweezer. Every woman has hair follicles, but some people are hairier than others.
Supernumerary: Some people (like Harry Styles!) have extra, smaller nipples. They either look like flat moles or have a fully-formed, raised bump.

The young person’s guide to conquering (and saving) the world. Teen Vogue covers the latest in celebrity news, politics, fashion, beauty, wellness, lifestyle, and entertainment.
Our favorite celebs are freeing the nipple on the regular these days. Whether it’s a slightly sheer bodysuit and jeans, a totally see-through dress, or wearing their underwear as outerwear, it seems as though the stylish Hollywood set has found a new way to stay cool this summer. Kendall Jenner came out in support of the trend, saying, “I think it’s cool and I really just don’t care! It’s sexy, it’s comfortable and I’m cool with my breasts. That’s it!”
Showing it all off on nearly a daily basis, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Bella Hadid , and Bella Thorne are all huge proponents of the barely-there look. What was once referred to as a near-wardrobe malfunction is quickly being thought of as an envelope-pushing trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere — anytime soon. Check out some of the most memorable #FreeTheNipple moments of the season.
Selena stepped out in a date night look that showed it all off in the right lighting.
Kendall's feminine and flirty dress for summer was totally sheer.
Bella's polka dot top for a night out left little to the imagination.
Kylie promoted her new lip kits on Snapchat with a revealing shot.
Kendall took to the airport with little clothing to speak of.
Emma covered Vanity Fair in a gorgeous mesh bodysuit that revealed it all.
Tape placed in all the right spots.
In one of Bella's many totally sheer lace bodysuits.
Kendall makes her totally sheer bodysuit Instagram-approved with her favorite emojis.
Kendal used real-life emoji patches in a sheer bodysuit with strategically placed stars.
Kylie covered up in metallic blue paint for a photo project with photographer Sasha Samsonova.
A glamorous outtake from Bella's Love Magazine spread.
Kendall took on Coachella in a totally sheer bralette.

There's no denying it: 2017 has been the year of #FreeingTheNipple — and we're absolutely here for it. It's no secret that women have long been harshly and unfairly policed for the way we dress, so going braless not only serves as a daring style statement, but a trend that boasts a bold feminist message. In other words, choosing to Free The Nipple is a sartorial way for women to show they won't submit to society's standards of how "they" think we should dress.
Everyone knows there's power in numbers, which is why it's so awesome to see so many celebs on board the braless bandwagon. Everyone from Kendall Jenner (who rarely opts for a bra these days) to Selena Gomez and Halsey have been seen sans a bra, and they happen to make it look totally effortless. In fact, it makes us want to try the trend, too. Ahead, check out all the ways your favorite A-listers have been Freeing the Nipple as of late — and in style no less.
Call it a wardrobe malfunction if you want, but Selena worked this sheer LBD look like the queen that she is.
The prettiest subtly see-through sundress — AKA the perfect way to ease into the braless trend.
Bella Hadid has been on board the braless train for quite some time now, and never fails to slay. This slightly sheer turtleneck ensemble is no exception.
Wearing a casual tee à la Miley? No bra, no problem.
Kylie rocked this caramel-hued dress sans a bra, because comfort.
Why wear a bodycon with a bra when you don't need to? Keke Palmer proves it's an option everyone should try if they feel comfortable.
Lily Rose Depp shows you can wear a super-casual shirt without a bra, because why not?
Halsey recently went sans a bra at a concert in Miami.
Cindy Bruna freed the nipple in Cannes in a stunning champagne gown. BRB, swooning over this look forever.
Wearing a super low-cut shirt? No bra needed.
