DEAR AMY: I am a 40-year-old woman with a brother two years younger.
We were raised in a house that had a lot of pornography exposure (initiated by my father — my mother was dismayed).
At the ages of 10 and 12, my brother and I started behaving sexually with each other. It went all the way.
It was consensual, and it lasted less than a year.
I still think about it and wonder if my brother ever thinks about or feels ashamed about it, like I do.
Should I still feel ashamed after all these years, or is this something I need to just forget about?
DEAR EMBARRASSED: Just forget about it?
Can you? No. So you should deal with it now.
You and your brother violated an ancient taboo without realizing it — because you were children. You were acting out adult sexual behavior that you were seeing in your home. Your father’s choice to expose you to pornography normalized behavior in your home that should not be normalized among children.
As the older sibling, you might have initiated this behavior — or as you got older, you might have realized it was wrong and now feel guilty that you either started it or didn’t put a stop to it sooner.
You should discuss this with a therapist.
Ultimately, you may choose to discuss this with your brother, to put it in perspective and — if necessary — explain and apologize for your part.
DEAR AMY: I barely talk to my wife.
What do you do when you know you still love someone and you know she still loves you, but the betrayal and actions of both parties were so great that forgiveness isn’t even an option?
DEAR SAD: Forgiveness is always an option.
The path toward forgiveness is paved through talk, connection and apology. You can’t undertake this journey without being truthful and heartbreakingly vulnerable with your partner.
It is possible to repair a relationship, but only if you are both willing to do the hard work necessary to repair and reattach to each other. I hope you will try.
DEAR AMY: “Estranged” fears being scorned by society for separating him/herself from an abusive father.
I lived for years with anger and depression rooted in an abusive upbringing.
I finally found the strength to walk away completely from my past — which included severing contact with my parents.
Within months, I began to heal. I’ve now been free of them for 15 years, and I’m happier every day for it.
As for social scorn, I was elated to discover that those who knew me fully understood my decision. The opinions of those who don’t know me don’t matter.
I hope “Estranged” is able to take the steps necessary to be happy — without concern for others’ perceptions.
DEAR HAPPY: Many readers have responded with similar stories. Sometimes the best way to heal from a legacy of abuse is to break the cycle and create a new, healthy life.

Brandon Hutchinson, now 25, abused his younger sister from the age of three and is now serving time for his crimes
A YOUNG woman who was repeatedly raped by her own brother has spoken out about the traumatising ordeal.
Brandon Hutchinson, now 25, sexually abused and raped his younger sister from the age of three - all while their parents sat just downstairs.
Brandon's 22-year-old sister, who chose to be named Olivia, has spoken openly about the horrific abuse, four years after her brother was jailed for his crimes.
Hutchinson was sentenced to nine years in prison in January 2015 at Preston Crown Court.
He was found guilty of nine charges including indecent sexual assault, sexual activity with a child, two counts of indecent sexual assault on an under 13, three counts of rape of a child under 13.
The abuse began when Olivia was three years old and her brother was six.
Olivia, from Fleetwood, Lancashire, said: "I remember being abused by Brandon from the age of three and as he got older it then progressed into rape.
"He would even use objects to assault me with which included make-up brushes, mascaras and hair brushes.
"When he'd rape me he'd use a sock or plastic sandwich bags.
"His abuse only stopped when I was 12 as I was old enough to understand it was wrong and felt confident enough to say no.
"I was forced to live with the horrendous memories until 2014 when I finally had the courage to tell my mum.
"No one knew what a complete monster he was until I explained everything, I was tired of living a lie."
Olivia's mum, Janet Hutchinson, 43, was devastated when details of her daughter's abuse came to light in 2014.
The doting mum-of-three thought he was the 'perfect son' but despite this, she instantly supported her daughter and the pair told the police.
She said: "It was a huge shock. It had happened for years all in the family home when we were downstairs.
"I felt sick knowing that my seemingly 'perfect son' was actually a rapist."
Olivia and her mum, Janet, turned to comfort eating as a way to cope with their ordeal and the pair reached a staggering 50st combined.
Janet said: "The court trial took its toll on our family and both me and Olivia comfort ate to try and make ourselves feel better.
"I weighed 26st 3lb and was addicted to eating takeaways, cakes and chocolate. I've since lost 14st and now weigh 12st 10.
"Olivia who weighed 26st too has since lost 5st with a weight-loss plan."
Hutchinson is due to be released from jail in May after serving half of his nine year sentence.
Janet said: "We have moved on from it now and although your love for your child doesn't switch off overnight, we don't have any contact with Brandon now and we won't when he's released."
Olivia added: "I'll never forget what happened to me, he abused his position as my older brother.
"I know the importance of sharing sexual abuse stories as it helps other victims speak up.
"I don't want to sit back and not say anything, I've always wanted to raise awareness and share my experiences.
"If I was able to get justice I want others to realise they can too."
