A “major gang war” between ruthless Bronx crews who are unafraid of cops has left a 13-year-old boy and two other teens dead in just the past five days, law enforcement sources told The Post on Monday.
“We can’t keep them in [jail], and they’re going after each other,’’ a high-ranking police source said, referring to juvenile suspects who end up back on the streets after being sent to family court instead of being prosecuted as adults.
A city prosecutor added, “They don’t go to jail, so they do robberies, get in fights and carry guns.
The first teen to die in the bloody gang-fueled stretch of borough violence was 19-year-old Tyquill Daugherty, who was shot in the head in front of his home in Crotona just before midnight Wednesday, sources and cops said.
Daugherty’s gang-related death was followed by Sunday’s fatal retaliatory drive-by shooting of Jaryan “Jay Ripp’’ Elliot, a 13-year-old suspected member of the Crips, about five blocks away in Belmont, sources said.
Elliot — who just graduated from middle school — was at the scene when Daugherty was shot, although he is not believed to have pulled the trigger, sources said.
The 13-year-old kid already had eight busts under his belt, including for robbery and assault — and had been locked up twice this year before being dumped back on the street, the high-ranking cop source said.
About eight and a half hours after Elliot’s slaying, revenge for his murder was taken on 16-year-old Ramon Gil-Medrano, who was fatally shot by two males on scooters a little over a mile away in Mount Hope, sources said.
Gil-Medrano, who was affiliated with the 800 YGz, or “Young Gunnaz,’’ gang, had been at the scene of the 13-year-old’s slaying, although it is not clear if he is the one who did the killing, sources said.
It’s no surprise there was retaliation for Elliot’s death because “he was crazy and admired by all the gang members, a modern-day Baby Face,” a source said, referring to the 13-year-old Bronx boy and the notorious 1930s gangster Lester Gillis Nelson , who was nicknamed “Baby Face” because he looked so young.
“People on social media [were] vowing revenge for his murder,” the source said of Elliot.
A borough cop said, “There is a major gang war going on in the Bronx with three teenagers killed in less than a week.
“Everybody is walking around with a gun because they are more afraid of getting shot than getting arrested.”
Two more people were then wounded in a double shooting around 4:20 p.m. Monday a little over a mile from where Elliot was killed — a revenge crime for one of the earlier three incidents of gunplay, sources said.
Gil-Medrano had previously been wounded in a shooting on July 7, 2020 — a year to the day of Daugherty’s death last week, sources noted.
The 16-year-old was shot at the time by two guys on a scooter on Prospect Avenue, about two blocks from Daugherty’s murder.
Gil-Medrano was wanted for an armed carjacking at the time of his death, sources said.
It was one of three open gun cases he had against him in family court when he was killed — all stemming from incidents in the past seven months, sources said.
“What a joke,’’ a police source said.
“Any other time, he’d have been sitting in Rikers Island,’’ the source said, suggesting the justice system has gone soft on prosecuting criminals. “It’s just ridiculous. It just shows you how bad it is.”
Another law enforcement source added, “This is another instance of no consequences for repeat gun offenders.
“The system that purports to help these kids is actually acting as an incubator for future violence,” the source said. “Gil-Medrano gets caught with guns, goes to kid-glove Family Court, and he’s out here walking the streets. The kid gloves ultimately allowed him to get murdered.”
A source said online taunting is only continuing to help fuel the gang warfare.
“These shootings are young kids that are part of localized gangs that are antagonizing each other on social media and then going out and shooting each other,” the source said.
The slayings come as the Bronx is getting hammered amid the city’s gun epidemic — with the borough racking up more than twice the number of shooting victims so far this year than for the same period in 2020.
On Monday, an innocent victim, a 66-year-old woman, was added to the grim tally when she was shot in the leg during a nearby dispute between two men in Clason Point. She was expected to survive. It was not clear if the shooting was gang-related.
There have been at least 318 shooting victims in the Bronx so far this year compared to 193 during that time frame in 2020, or a 64.8 percent hike.
Two of the recent teen gang slayings occurred in the 48th Precinct, which has seen a jump from 20 to 33 shooting victims.
Mourners of Elliot on Monday placed dozens of candles in front of a photo of the 13-year-old with angel wings on him outside the apartment building where he lived.
The candles spelled out “JR,’’ for his Jay Ripp street nickname, a 13-year-old pal said.
Two young males dressed in nearly all black with some blue — Crips colors — nodded at the scene when asked by The Post if they were part of his “crew.’’
They posted a fresh $100 bill on one of the candles, and when asked if they were worried someone might take it, one of them smirked and replied, “Nobody.’’
Two young females poured wax from some of the candles to spell “EOS,’’ which one of them said stood for “Exterminate on sight.’’
Several people tied blue bandannas to the wrought-iron fence next to the candles.
Elliot’s 13-year-old friend said his dead pal was the middle of three brothers.
“He was going to high school!’’ the friend said. “No more.
“His mom is not doing good right now. It’s sad.”
A neighbor added of local young toughs, “They know nothing happen if the cops get ’em!
“It’s catch and release. Why you think they at it so young?’’
A mother of nine children, including seven boys, said she knew Elliot through her kids and urged parents in the area to stand up and take charge.
“They need to be more aware of what their children is doing,’’ said the woman. “These kids is out here 2, 3 o’clock in the morning. No mothers is looking for them. No mothers is coming to check for them.
“At the end of the day, we, all the mothers, need to come out here and stand up with each other together, you understand, so our children can stop getting involved in all this negativity.
“That’s why I’m out here,” she said. “I don’t want my children to die.’’

Gang members used older girl to lure alleged victim to scene of the crime.
March 29, 2011— -- A gang of teen boys are accused of savagely raping an 11-year-old girl they lured from a California shopping mall and brutalized in the dank men's room of a nearby park, police said.
The oldest of the alleged attackers is Michael Sykes, 19, who was arrested Monday following a two-week manhunt. He is charged with rape, sodomy and assault of a minor.
Sykes is the oldest and last charged member of a group of seven other teens who police say are all members of a local street gang known as the South Side Mafia.
The March 10 rape may have been part of a perverse gang initiation rite, according to police who said the teens would be further prosecuted on gang-enhanced charges and could be charged as adults.
Police say the girl was lured to Victoriano Park in Moreno Valley, Calif., by an older girl, who she may have known and who may have been working for the gang. The older girl has also been charged for abetting the commission of rape.
The seven other gang members, aged 14 to 17, were arrested soon after the 11-year-old girl came forward to report the crime. Police say they did not initially make news of the crime public so as not to endanger the investigation.
On Monday, the Riverside County Sheriff announced they were looking for Sykes, believing he had fled to Los Angeles. He was arrested later that day.
Sykes and the other boys do not yet have attorneys, police said.
The police have not identified the girl or the accused minor assailants.
It is unknown whether the victim knew the young men, said Cpl. Courtney Donowho, spokeswoman for the Riverside County Sheriff.
Donowho said police do not believe the boys photographed the scene as has happened in other recent gang rape cases.
The incident follows several similar high-profile group sexual assaults.
In February, 13-year-old from Banning, Calif., reported being held down and assaulted by two boys also at a park.
Earlier this month the alleged rape of an 11-year-old girl from Cleveland, Texas by 18 men and boys ranging in age from 14 to 26, sparked national outrage.
In 2009, a 15-year-old high school student was gang raped on school grounds during a homecoming dance. Police in Richmond, Calif., believe as many as 20 people watched or participated in the assault that lasted more than two hours, with some photographing or recording the attacks.

The trial began Monday for a young woman from Central Islip, N.Y., who is accused of luring five young men into a savage 2017 ambush that left four of them dead.

Leniz Escobar, an admitted member of the MS-13 gang, is charged with convincing the victims — Michael Lopez, Justin Llivicura, Jorge Tigre and Jefferson Villalobos — into meeting up at a wooded area to smoke marijuana.

But soon after the young men arrived, they were ambushed. They were beaten and hacked to death with machetes and tree limbs by more than a dozen members of the notorious MS-13 gang, prosecutors allege. In court documents obtained by The Tribune-Democrat , prosecutors described the murders as a "horrific frenzy of violence."

Escobar, who was 17 at the time of the attacks, has been charged with multiple counts of racketeering. She faces up to life in prison.

In court on Tuesday, Alexander Ruiz — the lone survivor of the attack — testified that he managed to escape by running for his life. According to Fox 5 News , he told the jury that members of MS-13 covered their faces with sweatshirts and ordered them to get down on the ground.

Prosecutors allege that the motive for the attack was payback because the victims had allegedly "disrespected" the gang on social media. Prosecutors also allege that the slain teens were members of a rival gang, although their families dispute that allegation.

Escobar has pleaded not guilty to all charges, and her attorneys say she did not realize that the victims would be attacked.

But prosecutors disagree. During their opening statements, they alleged that Escobar lied and portrayed herself as a victim, but secretly bragged to her boyfriend about her role in the murders. They also allege that she discarded her bloody clothes and disposed of her cellphone so that law enforcement would be unable to recover its contents.

In court papers, prosecutors say that Escobar is suspected of "instigating the murders, along with another juvenile female, by locating photographs of some of the victims flashing MS-13 gang signs on social media … and then showing those photographs to MS-13 members."

According to the New York Post , four other MS-13 members are awaiting trial for the murders, while two other members have already been sentenced to 50 and 55 years in prison, respectively.

Federal authorities say that MS-13, also known as La Mara Salvatrucha, actively recruits young teens from El Salvador and Honduras, although many gang members were born in the U.S. The gang has been blamed for dozens of killings on Long Island.

The trial of Escobar, nicknamed "Diablita," is expected to continue for several weeks. Her attorney did not immediately return PEOPLE's call for comment.

FIVE boys as young as twelve have been detained in Germany on suspicion of gang-raping a woman in a park, sparking a row about whether the country's age of criminality should be lowered.
The youths stand accused of assaulting a mentally disabled 18-year-old woman, but German prosecutors admit some of them are too young to stand trial.
Three of them are 14, the earliest age at which offenders can be prosecuted in Germany, but two are only 12, meaning they cannot be arrested or charged.
The incident took place on Friday in the western city of Mülheim after the group, all originally from Bulgaria, purportedly lured the victim into a playground in the park.
Reports say they then dragged her into some bushes and filmed a sexual assault on their phones.
A spokesman for local police said: "There was violence, massive violence."
Police did not share details of the attack, but local media said the woman was "abused in various ways".
Residents nearby were alerted to the incident after their dogs would not stop barking.
After an hour, a 61-year-old man reportedly came out of his house after an hour and saw the woman and two suspects, who fled the scene immediately.
The man found the injured and traumatised woman on the ground and alerted police.
She was taken to hospital with unspecified injuries.
The victim was able to give detailed descriptions of the perpetrators, and police later arrested all five.
In Germany, the minimum age at which a child is considered to be criminally responsible for an offence is 14, while in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland the equivalent age is ten.
Rainer Wendt, the head of the police force union, said: "For years we've been demanding that the age of criminal responsibility be lowered in Germany."
But the head of the German Association of judges, Jens Gnisa, said: "The equation 'more punishment, less criminality' does not work with youths.
"The educational rules established in German law are enough to tackle juvenile crime."
Speaking about Friday's incident, police spokesman Peter Elke said: "After we determined that two of the group members are 12 years old and therefore are not criminally responsible, we handed them over to the parents.
"The three 14-year-olds were arrested and detained overnight.
"They were released on Saturday after interrogation."
The two 12-year-olds will reportedly be handled by Germany's Youth Welfare Office.
A police investigator who wanted to remain anonymous told local media that an arrest warrant had no chance of success in this case.
"Due to the current legal situation, it is very difficult to bring suspects who are that young into custody," he said.
"However, the problem now is that they can freely discuss the victim's statement with each other to cast doubt on it."
