Women In Distress > Events > Teen Dating Violence Awareness month
Teen dating violence is unfortunately a widespread issue. 1 in 3 teens experience teen dating violence in the U.S., and about 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year.
We’re focusing on digital abuse especially this year, with our theme of “Behind The Screen” to highlight the increasing presence of technology and social media in our relationships and interactions, particularly for youth and particularly in this year where we continue to connect primarily on virtual platforms because of the pandemic. Throughout the month, we will be focusing our training and initiatives on raising awareness of digital abuse, using technology safely and to promote healthy behaviors, and ways to “unplug” to find balance in yourself and your relationships.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM). The Resource Center for Domestic Violence defines teen dating violence (TeenDV) as a pattern of abuse, or threat of abuse, against teenagers who are dating, “hooking up” or or in other types of romantic situations. The tactics used to victimize a young person can take different forms, including verbal, emotional, physical, sexual and digital. TeenDV happens in diverse groups and cultures, across sexual orientations, identities, religions and ethnic backgrounds.
Every teen deserves healthy relationships in their lives. Encourage the young people in your life to talk openly about respect, consent and boundaries. Discuss with them what healthy relationships look like and contain. loveisrespect.org provides free materials for promoting teen dating violence prevention and education.
