A man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for forcing his wife to have sex with a dog in the south Indian state of Karnataka on Tuesday.
The incident came to light in March 2017 when the man’s wife, who left her husband's home along with her three children following "physical and psychological abuse," filed a police complaint. She stated her husband made her watch pornographic videos on his phone and forced her to indulge in similar acts. He also forced her to perform sexual acts with a dog and assaulted her when she refused.
“In March 2017, he got his uncle’s puppy, which was about six to seven months old, and forced his wife to perform sexual acts with it,” a police officer said. Investigations revealed the man had forced the woman to have sex with the canine three times in a span of two weeks after it was brought home.
“When the woman repeatedly refused to comply with his demands, he would threaten to throw her out of the house and also abandon their children. The woman is a homemaker and she depended on him financially. He would also beat her up if she refused to do as he says,” he added, local media outlet the News Minute reported.
He was taken into custody the same month and denied bail by the court. He remained in jail during the trial and was convicted Tuesday.
Police said the dog’s owner and the victim's parents testified on behalf of the woman in the court.
“Apart from the survivor's testimony and the testimonies of her parents and her husband's uncle, we had solid evidence. We had got medical reports for the woman and the dog, which worked in favor of the survivor. The judge called it a heinous crime and has sentenced him to 10 years in prison,” the officer said.
In a similar incident in 2013, a woman was forced to have sex with her in-laws' dog on several occasions in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Apart from forcing the woman to perform sexual acts with the dog, the in-laws also tortured her by beating her up. A case of harassment and torture was filed against them, News 18 reported .

A girl was raped by a man repeatedly in a 14-year campaign of abuse that allegedly saw her forced to have sex with a dog.
The girl, who was just 11 or 12 years old when the abuse began, alleged that the abuse was broadcast live in internet chatrooms.
She gave traumatic interviews to police in which she said she blamed herself for being "too afraid" to stop him.
In the interviews, which were summarised in Swansea Crown Court by Judge Geraint Walters, she described what he called "some of the gravest sexual offences".
Judge Walters described how she said the sick paedophile first took her virginity by pinning her up against a stable wall and raping her.
The abuse also happened on camera with other people watching. Initially, it took place on a one-to-one basis. But it later he moved to an internet chatroom where "a few hundred people would watch".
In police interviews, she also described extreme pain she experienced during the sex acts.
She told the police officer: "I blame myself. I never did enough to stop him. I had opportunities to stop him but I was too afraid.
"I hate myself. I feel disgusted I let him do these things. I dream of it. Every single night I go through that."
On another occasion, according to Judge Walters, she said that: "He made me have sex with a dog and wanted me to do it again. It got to the point I had to hurt the dog to stop him.
"It was disgusting. I can’t put into words how much that hurt."
She also alleged that she believed she may have been drugged.
David Hart, of Chemical Road in Morriston, denied sixteen charges alleged to have taken place between 2001 and 2015, including 12 charges of rape, two charges of indecent assault, one assault by penetration and one assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
But the 60 year old was found guilty on all counts by a jury at Swansea Crown Court, by a majority verdict of eleven to one on each.
Hart had attended the trial which began last week, but failed to turn up to court on the day the jury would be sent out as he had been admitted to Morriston Hospital that morning.
He will be sentenced at a later date when discharged from hospital.
Judge Walters reminded the jury that Hart, a taxi driver, was a man of previous good character, and had denied allegations he had asked a former partner to engage in sex acts with a friend’s doberman dog.
He also said that under cross-examination he had claimed to be physically unable to have sex at the time the allegations took place.
And Judge Walters reminded them of character references to the court, in which Hart had been described by friends as "a polite man, very happy to help. I’ve never heard him raise his voice, even to his dog".
Judge Walters concluded such behaviour, “obviously leaves a permanent psychological mark. Someone can’t be subjected to this behaviour without life-changing consequences.”
Declining to sentence immediately, he said he needed to first find out details of Hart’s medical condition that had seen him admitted to hospital, but added his sentence ‘would be many years indeed’.
Thanking the jury for their service, he told them: “Some of the details in this case was amongst the most detailed and appalling I have heard about sexual abuse. Some defies belief”.
