A former scout leader installed a hidden camera in a cafe toilet to spy on teenage boys, a court has heard.
Terence Hamblett set up the spy cam to satisfy his sick fantasies and share the images with other peadophiles.
When he was finally arrested police discovered footage of the pub landlord fitting the camera on one of his laptops, along with 12 clips of teenage boys using the cubicle.
But the voyeurism was just one in a catalogue of ‘vile’ and ‘disgusting’ child sex offences committed over 10 years.
Hamblett had been using the internet and social media to sexually exploit vulnerable victims for his own sexual gratification.
The 44-year-old has now been jailed for 12 years.
Hamblett’s home was raided in 2016 after Cheshire Police received information from another force.
Officers discovered footage of him installing the camera on one of his laptops, while in another case, the ex-scout leader had persuaded another paedophile in his 20s living in Ireland to abuse his own toddler son, aged three, while Hamblett watched via Skype.
He insisted on being called ‘The Master’ by the peadophile and the two men sent each other nearly 14,000 messages including sick images over a three-year period.
When grooming teenage boys online, Hamblett used the Skype accounts ‘bennyboy4900’ and ‘jordbroomy’ to pretend to be a 16-year-old boy with a broken webcam to mask his real age.
He then sent them indecent images in exchange for them performing sex acts.
Simon Duncan, prosecuting, said Hamblett had sent 566 Category A images alone to the boys.
Mr Duncan said the offences took place between 2002 and 2016, and when investigators intervened, they discovered Hamblett’s laptops contained 922 sick images in total.
They included 233 of the most serious Category A images including 70 videos, 245 images in Category B with 70 videos, and 444 Category C images with three videos.
Officers trawled more than 1.5m Skype messages to uncover the extent of his prolific, long-term offending.
Amongst his computer files was the footage of him setting up the hidden camera in the ceiling of the toilets of a café he ran at JTF Mega Discount Warehouse in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent.
Hamblett, of Ellesmere Port, Cheshire admitted 20 charges, mainly for inciting children to engage in sexual activity via the internet, and making, possessing and distributing hundreds of sick images.
He also admitted one count of possessing ‘extreme pornography’ involving an animal, He also pleaded guilty to another charge of voyeurism.
Cheshire police revealed after the hearing they launched their investigation in 2016 after a tip from another force.
James Coutts, defending, said his client had pleaded guilty to the offences and had no prior convictions, although he agreed with the judge this was of limited merit because the offending had begun so long ago.
He said Hamblett still had the support of his partner, with whom he had run a pub in Runcorn, Cheshire, until they had to give it up due to the court proceedings.
Sentencing him to 12 years in prison for his ‘depraved’ and ‘disgusting’ offending, Judge Steven Everett stressed that every child in the haul of indecent images was a victim of sexual abuse.
He said: ‘You described those actions as vile, you say how the public will be horrified and disgusted by that. You say you feel physically sick about what it is you did. These are appropriate descriptions for what you did.’
Judge Everett added: ‘It was utterly vile, and what you did, and any right-thinking person would be sick at the thought of some of the material you downloaded on the internet, sick of the thought of your actions.
‘What you did is just so alien to any decent person would even consider as right. It’s hard to comprehend this behaviour. It’s depraved and disgusting.’
DC Andy Kent, of Cheshire Constabulary’s Major Investigation Team, said: ‘This was a highly complex investigation involving thousands of images and videos, more than one-and-a-half million Skype messages and the identification of a large number of victims and other offenders both in the UK and abroad.
‘As a result of the work by our dedicated officers we have been able to show that Hamblett is a professional paedophile who used the internet and social media to sexually exploit vulnerable victims for his own sexual gratification.
‘He possessed, made and distributed an extremely large number of images and videos of children being sexually exploited and abused and he duped teenage boys into performing sexual acts for him on a webcam by concealing his true age and identity.’
Judge Everett said the right time to impose a Sexual Harm Prevention Order would be at the time of his release.
He placed Hamblett on the sex offenders’ register for life and ordered the forfeiture and destruction of his digital equipment.
