I am not trying to debate the whole spanking/not spanking delima. I am a parent that has spanked my son. He is 15 now and I haven"t popped his bottom since he was in early elementry school. The only time I ever spanked him was when he was when he was past the point of reason. IE: having a smart mouth after being warned he was working on getting a spanking, sitting on the edge of the road playing. I can count on one hand the number of times I've spanked him... always with my bare hand and two or three swats on the behind.

Here is my question: At what age should spanking stop?

My DSD who is 8 and isn't a behavior issue is being spanked in public by her momma. Her father hasn't popped her bottom in years, as she is one that responds to reason and other forms of dicipline ( loss of priviliges). I do not know the reason for the spanking. DSD is a very sensitive person who strives to please others (even to the point she gives up her own joys). It was just two years ago when the momma asked us how to dicipline the kids. We are the primary home and apparently she had no reason to dicipline (apparently of any kind... not even restricting playthings or early bedtimes) the kids until they were 6 and 10.

I personally feel that spanking is ineffective at this age... quite honestly ineffective past kindregarden or first grade.
I don't ever remember being spanked but I know I would shape right up when my dad started counting to 3 because if he got to 3 then its spanking time. It worked on me and if you gotta spank your kid when they are 8,9, whatever then do it. Seems at that age you can take away priveleges and ground them too.
I tried counting with the oldest. I stopped when she was about 3 and I had said.....Audery stop that right now..... 1, 2, and was fixing to say 3 when she says...... 3 mama.....say 3. Ummm not effective anymore. I just dropped that method and started 1 warning and then a swat. It reformed her attitude right quick.
my opinion=

I realize a lot of people support spanking.. everyone in my family supports spanking.. but I think it's a lousy way to teach your kids about which behaviors are appropriate and which aren't. You know so many opinions about how we raise kids and how we treat our spouses.. how women or gays or other minorities are treated or thought of.. have changed drastically in the past 50 years. I think spanking is a tradition that has been carried over from our past and I believe with time more and more people will understand that it's just a very destructive tool for teaching children about consequences. I'm a parent and I explain the rules so that it makes sense to my kid. She looks up to me.. she wants to please me and is disappointed in herself when she messes up. We talk a lot.. and maybe that's what's missing in many households that spank their children. I know when I was growing up.. I wasn't allowed to start a conversation and had to know my place. So a lot of resentment built up and I'm sure it escalated the problem. There was no rationalizing for me.. if something didn't make sense it didn't matter.. what mattered was that I obeyed. I don't parent that way.. the most important thing to me as her parent is that she understands everything. If she's made a mistake.. no matter what it is.. we talk it out. I ask her what she's thinking.. what she's feeling.. a lot of parents don't make the time to do this imo. And I think spanking ends up boiling down to control.. but (imo) kids don't need to be 'controlled' ..they need to be nurtured. But ya know what.. this isn't just 'my' world but yours too so I realize you have the right to do what you feel is best.. just contributing my opinion.

As long as the child is a dependent living at home, a parent has a right to spank if they choose.
drover and djacques , I agree. Only once have I spanked out of anger, but I have to gain a kid's attention who is out of control, clearly not listening, or just plain being bad.

It is my opinion that the only time spanking could be construed as abuse is doing so out of anger.
