In Matt Kazman’s short, a tragic coincidence convinces a teenager that his private time is a lethal weapon
Matt Kazman wanted to make a film that got inside the minds of teenage boys. The obvious avenue: masturbation.
Kazman’s “Killer,” one of the finalists in TheWrap’s ShortList Film Festival 2016, is a 20-minute look at a boy who believes his self-pleasuring is also a deadly weapon. But it’s also about growing up in a society where most teens get their sex advice from each other.
“The logline definitely reads a little sillier than the movie plays,” Kazman told TheWrap. “That was kind of intentional, because it’s an inherently silly idea: a kid thinking that masturbating can kill someone.”
In “Killer,” young Dusty (Hale Lytle) is enjoying some quality time to himself when his mother suddenly drops dead in the next room. One of his school frenemies had told him that every time someone masturbates another person dies, and after the fatal moment, Dusty starts to believe he has that power and acts accordingly.
Kazman said the short came from an idea he had for a feature film about two brothers who felt different types of guilt when their mother died unexpectedly. The older one regretted being rude, and the youngest felt shame because he was masturbating at the fatal moment. Kazman decided to focus on the latter and make it a short, seeing a lot of himself in the character.
“When I was that age, I was quiet and awkward,” Kazman said. “And surrounded by friends who would hear things from older brothers and family members about sex, and learning these things were not true. I liked the idea that in [Dusty’s] head it was frightening, but as an adult it was really funny.”
Kazman said one of the hardest parts of making the film was finding the right child actor to play an uncomfortable role, but with the right amount of levity.
“It took a while to cast, for obvious reasons,” he said before finding Richmond, Virginia, native Hale Lytle, now 14. “I knew I wasn’t going to make the film until I found that kid. I worked with a casting director for the first time who had worked with kids who were in ‘dark’ commercials. I wanted it to be honest and not feel melodramatic.”
Kazman said he’s heard from a surprising amount of people who’ve seen the film how much it reminded them about their experiences as teens, where they also got a lot of nonsense sex advice from peers. He would like to see that change for the better.
“If I’m promoting anything, it’s to inspire kids to feel comfortable talking to parents and older adults about sex,” Kazman said.

A highway patrol trooper in Sandusky County , Ohio, will not face charges after allegations surfaced that he and a pre-teen boy masturbated together five years ago.
Trooper Ricky Vitte Jr. told his wife “he did not want (the boy) to feel pressured on feeling the need to have to have sex with someone, when he can fix those needs by masturbating to porn,” according to a police report. The report says that on two separate occasions Vitte and the boy watched porn and masturbated in unison, with a dresser between them blocking their views of one another, the Sandusky Register reports.
According to the local newspaper, a Sandusky prosecutor declined to seek an indictment “because Vitte might have presented a defense that justified his alleged actions.”
The Sandusky Register reports that Vitte was charged with domestic violence years ago, after spanking his then-girlfriend’s 5-year-old son so hard the boy’s buttocks were left bruised and bleeding.

Police are waiting for a warrant to be approved for the arrest of a man who was caught on camera exposing himself and masturbating on a crowded SEPTA bus.
A Temple University Ph.D. student, who did not want to be identified, told police she was sitting on a SEPTA Route 23 bus on Friday when the man sitting next to her began to masturbate in front of her. The woman then she says she took out her phone and recorded the man in the act.
“You know this is on video, right?” the woman asks. “You really wanna do that? I have it on my phone.”
In the video, the man continues to expose himself, ignoring the woman’s questions.
“Are you crazy?” she then asks. “Do you see how many people are on this bus? Do you see a child behind you? You are disgusting.”
The video then shows the man turning towards the woman.
"Are you serious right now?" he asks. “I’m standing here the whole time. Why wouldn’t you just say something?"
“Does someone need to tell you not to touch yourself in public on a bus?” the woman replies.

The video then shows the man leaving the bus as more people confront him.
Both the woman and the bus driver later notified police. The woman was also interviewed by officials with the Special Victims Unit who are handling the investigation.
Joanna Logan, a passenger on the Route 23 bus, was shocked when she watched the video.
"Shocked, surprised and disgusted," Logan said.
Logan, who has a daughter, says she's most concerned about the fact that a young girl was sitting behind the man.
"It's just a repulsive idea all together," said Charles Brown, a Temple University student. "I don't understand why someone would do something like that."
Police say they know the man's identity but have not yet made an arrest. Detectives submitted an affidavit and are waiting for a warrant to be approved.
The Route 23 bus runs from Chestnut Hill to South Philadelphia. It is currently the longest bus route in the city.
