Most people would be shocked to find that bestiality is legal in four US states. Wyoming, New Mexico, Hawaii, and West Virginia do not have laws prohibiting the sexual assault of animals.
In those states, sexual assault against an animal can be prosecuted as animal abuse but there is no law outright addressing it. For the other 46 states, the seriousness of the crime varies. Some see it as a misdemeanor while others classify it as a felony.

Bestiality law dates back to the Colonial period with about 19 states having statues that date back to then. But the laws have needed updating as technology and farming have advanced.
Bestiality law covers a range of issues from human to animal sexual acts to the artificial insemination of animals. This has proven to be tricky as most dairy and meat farmers must do so to produce enough milk and meat for demand in the US.
Both Hawaii and Wyoming are in the process of creating and outlawing bestiality.

Richard Patterson, 48, has been indicted on bestiality and animal cruelty charges, authorities say. (Suffolk Police)
A former kennel owner was indicted in Virginia this week on multiple counts of bestiality and animal cruelty , according to reports.
The charges include an allegation that Richard Patterson, 48, and his wife, Christina Patterson, 42, both of Suffolk, had the front toenails of a male dog removed so they could more easily have sex with the animal, according to court documents.
When federal agents searched the couple’s home in July 2017, they found videos of the couple engaged in sex acts with the dog, the Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported.
The videos reportedly showed the couple in their master bedroom with a Doberman pinscher named Demon.
Christina Patterson was indicted in October on related charges, the report said. She is scheduled to stand trial beginning March 1.

Christina Patterson, 42, is expected to stand trial beginning March 1 on bestiality and animal cruelty charges, authorities say. (Western Tidewater Regional Jail)

After the allegations were initially publicized in 2017, Christina Patterson began fearing for her safety, the newspaper reported.
“She has received death threats and threats against her children,” her attorney, Nicholas Renninger, said at the time. “Some real unseemly stuff.”
Court documents said the investigation began when federal agents suspected Richard Patterson was buying and selling firearms despite a past felony conviction, the Suffolk News-Herald reported .
In May he pleaded guilty to one count each of illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and obstruction of justice, the Virginian-Pilot reported . For those offenses he received a sentence of eight years and four months in prison.
Meanwhile, the wife was also accused of attempting to transfer ownership of the couple’s kennel business after her husband was arrested on gun charges.
Federal agents argued that it was part of an effort to help her husband beat the weapons charges, in part by invalidating a search warrant for their home, but Christina Patterson said the couple was just trying to separate the business from bad publicity surrounding her husband’s arrest. She eventually pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, the newspaper reported.
The couple had owned and operated Imperial K-9 LLC, according to the report.

This cutie and her beast are the adorable three-year-old Siena and “Buddha,” her two-year-old Doberman. The unusual couple have been gaining popularity on social media through the photos of their antics, and because many consider a Doberman to be an unusual companion for a little girl.
“Dobermans are also known as ‘Velcro dogs’,” Tara Prucha, Siena’s mother, told Today. “They just want to be with their one human. And he has obviously chosen my daughter. We’re really happy with the attention Buddha is getting. People are seeing how sweet and mellow they can be.”

Shame about the ears and tail :( adorable pair, though.
Just what I was thinking. I thought ear and tail clipping was outlawed already. Shame on the breeder.
CraigSykora, plastic surgery is for humans, who have the option to choose it or not to. Dogs have no choice, and unlike humans are not obsessed with looking s certain way. Unless there is a leg image health reason for removing a body part, then these poor animals deserve to left alone and kept well away from people like you.
If you want to go have some surgeon cut your ears to a point, be my guest, but just don't let him/her have a go at your dog.

The tails are docked because they are prone to cancer in Dobermans. The ears are cropped to help with hearing (like a cats ears) as they are able to pinpoint sounds to within 5 degrees. Cropping is not allowed in some countries but most American breeds are done this way.

Outlawed? What country do you live in? What do you think about outlawing plastic surgery? Shame on you for wanting to control what other people do.
Absolutely. If people are concerned about showing what lovely dogs they can be, why disfigure them to make them look fierce. So glad this is banned here in the UK. Totally unnecessary.

So glad you live in the UK and that I don't.
Dobermans with intact tails will repeatedly injure them.
This may be in another country, where clipping ears and tail are legal....
The tail is actually good because of the way it can grow and get deformed. The ears though, yea, they look so much sweeter without cropped ears.
Meanwhile one, or all you women probably have sons with circumcised penises.
Actually, no. Because that's weird as well. In the UK we generally don't go in for mutilating other people without consent or disfiguring
our pets.

Sorry, but I like 'm better like that too, although I agree that in 2015 there are no real reasons to do this anymore (originally it wasn't for cosmetic reasons).

Shame you can't read an article and think about how nice it is. Shame you don't realize this dog had an awesome life. Shame on you.
It does have an awesome life. But in an article that is trying to portray how nice these dogs are, there is a point to be made about why someone would want to make it look fierce and nasty. It's a lovely dog. It would be more lovely if it hadn't had bits cut off it.

What shame? The shame about what an awesome life this Dobe has? Other dogs should be so lucky and other owners should be so good to their dogs. Shame on you for your stupid comment.
Dear Craig, obviously you felt personally attacked by some of these comments. Surely nobody intended to attack you in person. From all I understand, there's different opinions about what is considered reasonable changes in another creature, which is completely in our hands. You seemed to support, or be O.K. with the fashion to surgically change some features in certain breeds. I can't help but wonder what the good (for the dog or owner) there is in changing the length of the tail and deforming the ears? Maybe you would like to explain.
For the tail ,they can actually break it from wagging too hard
I pity the gals first boyfriend 3:)
I kept looking but i don't see any of the hallmarks of stress in Buddha that one often sees in dogs that are play, ages for children. (Lip licking, eye rolling, etc.). He truly seems to adore her, and she has very clearly been taught to respect her buddy's boundaries.

One day while driving home after school, 17-year-old Elisa Lee saw a nose of a doggie outside his house – fast forward to now, the two became friends with Lee patting the doggie every day. “At first I was afraid that he would bite me, since most dogs would bark at you and seem aggressive if you came near their house,” the student told BuzzFeed. But he didn’t.
“The first time I pet him he was so excited and started licking my hand and pawing at it,” she said. This became their daily ritual after Lee’s school: she has to come to pet the canine over and over again.
“Sometimes he’s not there, probably chewing on a toy or laying in the grass, but if I call his name he is sure to come to the little spot on the right side of the gate where he can see me better,” she said. “Most of the time, by the time I walk to the spot, he waits there for me to pet him before I leave.”
Lee met his owner and the old man revealed the doggie’s name was Ralph. Now the dog is addicted to Lee’s pats: “A lot of the time he looks so sad when I leave and tell him bye, but I tell him I will be there the following day or so on.”

Dogs are such wonderful, and loving, children. My Charlie is a Lowes Junkie, and I take him with me every time I go to get building material, just so he can greet and love the customers. He sits in the shopping cart(limo) jump seat, and wags his tail at everyone he sees. He's made hundreds of friends there, and can never get enough.
Dogs get very lonely and stressed out when they are locked up alone. I hope you've been able to help him with his anxiety.
Awwww. I wish there was a dog or cat waiting for me on my way to/from work. I'd so be stopping there for a long petting session.
