Leave it up to Rihanna to modernize an old school hairstyle with bangs that are shorter in the front and longer on the sides. Paired with a topknot, the singer looks oh so glam. “This is perfect for those with a shorter forehead and heart-shaped faces, but can look good on anyone who is confident enough to rock it,” says hairstylist Sami Knight . To get bangs to sit flat, pull them forward and under with a mini flatiron — Knight recommends the Cloud Nine Original Iron . Finish with an extra strong hold hair spray to keep bangs frizz-free all day. Try the Kérastase Laque Noir , which has anti-humidity protection.
Perhaps best known as Audrey Hepburn bangs, this cut falls mid-length with uneven, wispy ends. Here, Penélope Cruz nails the iconic hairstyle. At the salon, request to have your hair cut with a little razor to help soften the edges. “Oval faces are ideal for this style, although I’m a big believer in breaking the rules,” says Knight. “If you like the way it looks, go for it!” If your hair is prone to cowlicks, Knight suggests sleeping with a headband on to flatten your bangs out. In the morning, add volume back by applying a spritz of Oribe Volumista .
For more of a boho look, go for medium length bangs, a.k.a. Alexa Chung’s signature style. It’s slightly messy and that’s the beauty of it. As the ends hit pretty close to eyes, trims may be needed on the regular, depending on how fast your hair grows. Aim to find a salon that offers complimentary or inexpensive bang trims. It will save you in the long run! To keep your hair looking like a cute mess instead of a hot one, dry hair 90 percent and apply a tiny dab of Julien Farel Flexible Paste to keep flyaways at bay.
For all the ladies out there with naturally curly hair — whether that may be corkscrew, ringlets, spirals or gentle waves — know this: bangs can add a nice softness to your face and overall haircut. "Bangs cut above the brows are strong," hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins says, ideal for round or square faces. like Lily Collins' "It becomes a fashion statement." Flatironing these bangs once they're blown dry gives them edgy definition. To avoid having your bangs cut too short, ask your stylist to trim them gradually. "A quarter of an inch too short may not matter when you're getting a haircut, but it makes a big difference with bangs," Hawkins says. "Ask your stylist to cut them longer at first and take them up in increments until you reach the perfect length."
Trimmed to the eyelashes and angled down slightly at the temples, Taylor Swift's bangs pack major attitude. "They add mystery and are the focus of the entire hairstyle," says Hawkins. Dramatic as it is, the horizontal line softens Swift's heart-shaped face. Since blunt fringe is heavy and adds width, it also flatters oval faces (and thick textures). Blow-dry them with a round brush. Also: don't rule out bangs if you have naturally curly hair — Swift does! "Determine how smooth your hair gets when you blow-dry it before you cut anything," Hawkins says. Ask your stylist to cut your bangs while they are dry (hair stretches when it's wet), so you'll know exactly how they'll fall.
A lighter — and more bohemian — version of Swift's lash-skimming fringe, Rachel Zoe's are trimmed with a razor in two sections: one that falls directly over the forehead, then longer layers on the sides that blend with the rest of the hair. Bonus: This style, perfect for oval faces, expertly camouflages the forehead and corners of the eyes. If you get bangs like this, go easy on the styling products. "Style them with whatever you'd normally use on your hair, but apply it to the rest of your hair first with your hands," Hawkins says. "You can use whatever's left on your bangs." If you're using a shine spray, mist it on your brush first and then comb through.
For an edgy take on longer bangs, part your hair to the side and brush it over, à la Katy Perry . According to Julien Farel, hairstylist and owner of Julien Farel Restore Salon and Spa in New York City, this style works on any type of hair. The best part? It’s super quick and easy to do. To keep hair in place, style with Julien Farel Flexible Gel . It’s a lightweight product that creates volume without adding any flaking or stiffness.
Another way to wear bangs? Parted down the middle like Zooey Deschanel does: It keeps hair out of the way but still draws attention to her insanely blue eyes. "With the contrast of her dark hair color, it actually makes them look more blue," Hawkins says. Curtain bangs like these can help make the transition to a grown-out style, too. The wispy side layers look soft and feminine, especially when the rest of the hair is swept back. Here's a pro tip: When applying rich face creams and makeup, make sure they're fully absorbed before letting your bangs down. Hawkins's trick? "To be safe, dab the forehead with a blotting tissue. “My eyes are immediately drawn to someone with baby bangs,” says Yuen. “There’s a bold, striking, cool-girl vibe emanating from them.” This cut is best for those with very straight hair with minimal to no cowlicks around the hairline. That way, once the bangs are cut, it’s as simple as combing them straight down and letting them air dry. Yuen notes his go-to product to style baby bangs is the Fat Boy Sea Salt Pomade . “It will add grit and separation if you wish to wear them choppy.” For a perfectly done sleek look, try the Fat Boy Tough Guy Water Wax .
And of course, there are side-swept bangs. Or as Hawkins calls Debby Ryan's take: the non-bang bangs. "This version is more like a long, sweeping layer that has the effect of bangs," he says. "It creates a vertical line where the hair starts to swoop and thins a round face. " To steal Ryan's look, ask your stylist to trim a section of hair in the front of the face so that the longest point falls above the tip of your nose; blow-dry it with a round brush and set in a pin curl for ten minutes. "With the others, the hair is falling straight down," he says. "You need to condition your hair to drape to the side, and a pin curl will set that shape." If you're setting your bangs with hair spray, Hawkins suggests using a water-free version like Aveda Air Control Hair Spray to prevent any chance of frizz, and mist from an arm's length away to avoid piecey results.

This style may look like blunt bangs, but there's a key difference — they're cut into the shape of an arch, rather than being cut straight across.
Side bangs sweep across your forehead in an elegant way. They are a great way to frame your face without fully committing to blunt bangs.
These bangs are a pretty accessible option for anyone a little scared to take the plunge into full bang territory. Layered bangs blend into your hair and have tons of different lengths, which means you can style them however you want — you can part them down the middle, have them lay straight, or throw them to the side.
Choppy bangs have a little bit more texture than blunt bangs, and they're typically cut at varying lengths to give bangs more definition.
Feathered bangs are similar to curtain bangs, but they don't have to be parted in the middle — they can be worn any which way. Unlike layered bangs, feathered bangs get their texture at the ends, not by cutting layers directly into the hair.
