Drugs, poverty, and tourism are driving child prostitution in Kenya. DW's Andrew Wasike spoke to the children and adults caught up in the industry.
Mbuthia estate is located in one of Nairobi's largest slums, Mathare. During the day, the area looks normal but when night falls in, girls as young as 12 years can be seen walking the streets.
"I started by smoking marijuana," says Natasha. That's is not her real name and she is just 14. "That's when I started knowing about these things. The day I started drinking alcohol was the day that I started prostitution." Her clients are men who live in Nairobi and the surrounding areas.

Natasha's parents died of HIV/AIDS when she was very young. She was HIV negative at the time, but was infected through the sex work. Her aunt acts as her guardian and is trying to get her off drugs. She even sent her niece to a rehabilitation center.
"I have tried rehabilitating her but she always goes back to prostitution," says her aunt. "I think that is because she is a drug addict. Also her peers, her only friends, are prostitutes."
"This is my life and I have accepted it the way it is," says Natasha. "I dropped out of school so there is nothing else. I am not looking for any help – that is what my guardian doesn't understand."

Many of the girls are introduced to prostitution by their peers or relatives. "A lot of times the victims don't have any protection from their immediate family," says Tal Raviv from the Kenyan chapter of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). "Either the parents died or maybe the parents are the ones pushing them out to find some kind of livelihood."
In Nairobi, the girls sleep with men for as little as 100 Kenyan shillings ($0,98, €0,86).
Child prostitution has been blamed for an increasing school dropout rate, poverty and illiteracy as children skip class in pursuit of money. Although there are no recent figures on the number of children involved in sex work in Kenya, a report released by the IOM in May 2018 said an estimated 15,000 children aged 12 to 18 live in the tourist hubs along the country's coast.
That prostitution involving girls and boys is not only a result of poverty, but an organized business becomes apparent at the coast, where so-called "aunties" run child prostitution rings. One of them, Agnes – a former sex worker herself – explained how the business of child prostitution works. "Most of them come to me when they are around 12 ,13, or 14 years of age. If they earn around 5,000 Kenyan shillings, I take around 1,000 shillings," she told DW. "When they come to me, I never turn them away. I stay with them."
Sex workers who are part of this ring have to be under 19 years of age. Their clients are mostly men from Europe or the Americas.
"I normally start my day at 5 pm. I start by taking a shower, dressing up, finding something to eat,” one of the child prostitutes said. Orphaned at an early age, she was introduced to prostitution by her cousin at the age of 14, she told DW.
Now 16 and HIV positive, she works for an "aunty.” "By 7 pm, I go out. Sometimes you can spend the entire night outside but you don't make a single coin."
According to IOM report, many victims of child prostitution are also victims of human trafficking who are brought to the coast from other parts of the country. The tourism industry keeps the business going and some of the older sex workers double up as bar or hotel personnel.

The Internet Made It Easy to Become a Teen Prostitute

It all started when I was 17-years-old, a month or two after I graduated from high school . I was having a hard time getting a job. With no real job experience and a down economy, even for a position at Starbucks, I was competing against people with college degrees. They had far more impressive resumes. I quickly became frustrated with my search.
One day, while browsing the jobs on Craigslist, I spotted the “Adult Gigs” and “Adult Entertainment” section. I decided to check it out, mere curiosity at the time. The moment I clicked the link, I was met with hundreds and hundreds of links and posts from various men and women (mostly women) offering their “companionship” or “GFE” (Girl Friend Experience), in exchange for “roses” (i.e. monetary compensation). I was awed by how much money they made. Anywhere from $100 for 15 minutes to $600 an hour was the going rate. So, just for the hell of it, I posted my own ad.
Next thing I knew, I was getting calls and texts from a bunch of men who saw my ad. At first, I hesitated to reply, but I finally did and went to meet one man. He was in his mid-30s, and I met him at his house while his wife was out getting her nails done. It was a nice place, and he looked normal, which made me feel more at ease. We had sex for 15 minutes. He tried to coax me into not using a condom, but I insisted, and he eventually agreed. He gave me $150 for the deed, and I was on my way.
I’m a very shy person and have always avoided social situations. I didn’t have any real close friends, and I was picked on in school. At first, escorting helped me feel beautiful… wanted. But, it was all just a lie, and it soon became a path filled with sexual abuse and beatings. I was robbed and raped several times, and I internalized the hurt, hating myself more and more every time.
It was my mom who busted me. Even though I was really angry at the time, deep inside, I felt grateful. Without her intervention, I don’t know if I could have stopped. I was caught in a vicious cycle of feeling bad, getting money to get drugs to feel better again, only to feel bad again. Today, at 21 years old, I am sober and a lot wiser than I was at 19. The experience changed me. I look at everyone differently now.
I now understand how very dangerous the Internet can be. It’s a portal to everything, with only your keyboard acting as the barrier.
Note: Thanks to the efforts of advocates for victims of the sex trade, Craigslist shut down its “adult” section in 2010. Unfortunately, however, the Internet continues to serve as a primary way for perpetrators to find victims.

He claims he no longer works in Indonesia's thriving sex industry, but then extols his judgment as a purveyor of girls.

"Men like a body like a guitar," he says, appraising the form of my companion and Good Weekend photographer, Eka Nickmatulhuda.
Until last year, Son worked as a "channeller", supplying village girls from the Indramayu region of West Java to the brothels of Jakarta and Sumatra.

"If a family wanted to sell their girl, they'd usually come to me and say, 'Can you help my daughter? Can you take her?' 'Okay, what do you want?' I'd say. 'We want a house.' "
Son would then tell the parents if their desires were realistic: "A pimp can see if the girl is pretty enough, how many guests she will get per night. It's as simple as that."
The parents would get a loan and their daughter would pay it back with her labour, usually over 2 to 3 years. "They are like a cash cow, but they need to work hard," Son says.
A disproportionate number of Indonesia's prostitutes come from this one small cluster of villages in West Java. Not every girl here becomes a sex worker, but again and again in these villages we hear the same story: when an Indramayu family has a baby girl, they celebrate. They know that, if it becomes necessary in the future, she'll be able to support her whole family. Indramayu has become the region that sells its daughters.

Nur'asiah is a slight 21-year-old. On the wall of her grandparents' house in the Indramayu village of Bongas hangs a picture of her as a little girl dressed up as a princess. But this young woman is herself the mother of a six-year-old son, born when she was 15. She is also a veteran of an 18-month career as a prostitute and "sexy dancer" in the King Cross bar in the north Jakarta suburb of Kelapa Gading.
"A friend from a nearby village offered me the job," Nur'Asiah says. "She was also a sexy dancer."

Girls there were paid about $10 for dancing four times a night, and another $1 if her guest bought a drink. But the real money was for sex. At first Nur'Asiah only wanted to dance, but the bar owner pushed the point.
"The boss suggested I take some money for the family," Nur'Asiah says. "After he offered that, I called home, asking people here what they wanted ... I knew then that by saying yes, I'd have to do sexy dancing 'plus plus'. "

The loan was 30 million rupiah (about $3000), which her family used to renovate their house and buy a motorbike and rice seeds. Money also went to support Nur'Asiah's son. She'd accompany clients back to their hotels, earning 1 million rupiah (about $100) for sex.
"The first time I was nervous and afraid because he was a stranger, and I was sad because it was not with someone I liked or loved," she says. "I feel like I was forced. I didn't like it, but I needed the money."

Her grandfather, Dasmin, a beneficiary of the house renovation, is comfortable with what has happened.
"She chose the job; it was her own choice," he says as Nur'Asiah looks on impassively. "But the most important thing is that she did it for the family."
For perhaps 30 years Indramayu has been exporting its daughters, from the age of 15 or 16 up, to brothels across Indonesia. Though this course of action is so common that there is very little stigma, officially it's frowned upon. In 2007, Indonesia banned the traffic in girls under 18. But the industry adapted, and these days many young Indramayu girls are recruited by their friends, says Sukim, a former pimp who now works at Yayasan Kusuma Bongas, a non-government organisation devoted to fighting the recruitment of sex workers.
Middlemen still play a role behind the scenes, but if the first suggestion of a career in prostitution is made to a new girl by her friend, the real traffickers can plausibly deny their involvement. The rest of the model is unchanged: girls are still pressed to take loans, which are then used as a tool by the pimps and madams, who are all called Mami, to keep them loyal.
The first money is small and goes directly to the new recruit to buy clothes, make-up and a trip to the "magic man", or dukun . Many Indonesians hedge their bets between Islamic observance and village magic, but, for practical purposes, they place greater faith in the latter. The dukun performs a ritual which they believe symbolically implants a diamond in the girl's body, "to make her prettier and more desirable", Sukim says.
The pimp or channeller then goes out of his way to extend the loan, "pampering the parents" to create an ongoing debt. The parents outdo each other to build the most enviable house in the village. The houses act as a marketing tool to lure other families into the trade.
"Who were the most successful people? Sex workers," says Sunenti, another girl who took the bait. For the girls, though, the debt is a burden. Many sex workers live in dormitories guarded by brothel staff. "It's not easy to go out, even on your day off or to go shopping, because security guards go with you," says Nur'Asiah. "They follow you to make sure you don't run away or go to work in another bar.
