Adolescence is a stage that moves a young person from childhood into adulthood. The health and well-being of adolescents and young adults are shaped by variety of internal and external factors; experiences, relationships and environments. Young people need guidance, support and encouragement that foster healthy development. The Adolescent Health Program emphasizes a youth development approach, which inspires adolescents to make positive decisions for healthy and successful lives.
WA PREP works with schools, juvenile rehabilitation facilities, and youth serving agencies statewide to implement sexual health education effective in reducing adolescent pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV. Programs teach abstinence, contraception, and condom use, as well as adult preparation topics, including: parent/child communication, healthy relationships, and healthy life skills. WA PREP teaches youth ages 11-21 with age-appropriate and culturally relevant curricula for the groups and communities where they are implemented.
The Enlace Project (“enlace” meaning link or bond in Spanish) supports the academic, economic, social, emotional, and health needs of expectant and parenting teens, women, fathers, and families in Washington. It is funded by a grant from the Office of Adolescent Health. The project focuses on young people (ages 13-14) in Latina/Latino communities, including indigenous communities and migrant farm workers in Washington counties with the highest teen birth rates: Yakima, Grant, Adams, and Franklin. Our state partners are Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Program (WCSAP), Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV), Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), Within Reach; and local partners: Benton-Franklin Health Department, Columbia Basin Health Association and Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic.
Washington State Department of Health’s Adolescent Health Unit collaborates with internal and external partners to promote policy change to better integrate into the Medicaid billing structure, to build relationships with communities that desire SBHCs in their district, and promote their sustainability.

Teens are undergoing dramatic changes. In addition to the biological changes of puberty, they experience cognitive changes that allow them to think more abstractly. They become increasingly focused on friends. And as they seek greater independence, they often come into conflict with parents. Most get through adolescence with few problems, establishing identities and preparing for adulthood. Some, however, experience problems that lead to dropping out of school, drug use or crime.
The 2013 Stress in America ™ survey reveals that many American teens report experiencing stress at unhealthy levels, appear uncertain in their stress management techniques and experience symptoms of stress in numbers that mirror adults’ experiences.
This article seeks to complement and supplement the APA resolution on school dropout prevention with data from more recent research on child development, early childhood education, and social and emotional learning that helps to define the school dropout dilemma.
Left unchecked, long-term stress can contribute to a long list of physical and mental health problems.
