Miss Michigan’s Outstanding Teen 2021
MUSKEGON, MI – A group of 16 teens graced the stage Friday evening, June 18, but only one emerged with the crown.
Rylie Dewley, a Grand Blanc 17-year-old, won the 2021 Miss Michigan’s Outstanding Teen scholarship competition held at the Frauenthal Center in downtown Muskegon.
“This has been my dream now for over five years. I started competing when I was 12 and I’m 17 now, so it’s been a long journey,” she told MLive in an interview.
Participating as Miss Washtenaw County’s Outstanding Teen, Dewley edged out competitors aged 13 to 18 years old to win the title. She also won a $1,000 academic scholarship and the opportunity to compete in Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2021 program in July.
Dewley, who has leaky valves and mitral insufficiency heart disease, plans to use her platform to educate others on how to keep their hearts healthy.
Mistress of ceremonies and 2008 Miss Michigan Ashlee Baracy-Kunkel presented awards to four girls among the top five who also received scholarships.
Fourth runner-up Miss Shoreline’s Outstanding Teen Grace Larsen won a $150 scholarship. Third runner-up Miss Saginaw County’s Outstanding Teen Isabella Vesprini earned a $250 scholarship.
Second runner-up Miss Spirit of the State’s Outstanding Teen Marissa Carson was granted a $350 scholarship. First runner-up Miss Great Lakes Bay’s Outstanding Teen Kylie D’Andrea received $500.
The 2021 Miss Michigan’s Outstanding Teen competition featured talent performances, a lifestyle and fitness presentation, evening gowns and an on-stage question.
An opening production number kicked off the evening with candidates greeting the audience and dancing to “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars.
For her talent, Dewley gave a high-energy baton twirling performance to “Let’s Get Loud” in a bright yellow two-piece outfit with a fringe skirt.
“It was such an emotional week. I haven’t competed in two years due to COVID, so being back on stage was very nerve-racking,” she said.
At-Large Outstanding Teen Jade LaGore won the Miss Outstanding Teen Talent award worth $300 for her violin performance of “The Red Violin – Variation 5” by John Carigliano.
Other standout talent included Miss Bay County’s Outstanding Teen Kamryn Chasnis decorating a cake on stage and At-Large Outstanding Teen Kendall Comer singing Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good.”
Candidates, in their evening attire, answered on-stage questions written by fellow contestants addressing topics like social media and leadership.
Chasnis took home the $250 Vanessa Chambe Excellence in Interview award for answering how she handles peer pressure when it goes against her values.
“I think the best way to handle peer pressure is to simply walk away from the situation. If someone truly appreciates you and wants to be friends with you, they will not pressure you into situations you are uncomfortable with,” Chasnis said, wearing a light pink ballgown with a flowing skirt.
Outgoing 2019 Miss Michigan’s Outstanding Teen Madison McElvany gave her last performance as the titleholder with a contemporary dance routine to “Lung” by Vancouver Sleep Clinic.
Other awards included Miss Shoreline’s Outstanding Teen Grace Larsen winning the Miss Congeniality Award of $150, Miss Oakland County’s Outstanding Teen Breckyn Bussey was granted a $100 Miracle Maker award and At-Large Outstanding Teen Claudia Kenny won a $150 People’s Choice Award.
Michigan’s scholarship pageant weekend began on Thursday, June 17 with the first round of the Miss Michigan competition when Miss Spirit of the State Vivian Zhong and Miss Wayne County Emma Seidel received preliminary awards.
The Miss Michigan competition continues at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 18 at the Frauenthal Center, 425 W. Western Ave.
Miss Michigan 2019 Mallory Rivard will crown her successor at the end of the evening.
They can be purchased at the Frauenthal Box Office, by phone 231-727-8001 or online at eTix. In-person capacity is limited to 50% at the theater.
