Teases & Dares is the fourth studio album by Kim Wilde , released in November 1984 via MCA Records . The song "Is It Over" featured in the film Fletch .
After leaving RAK Records , who had released her first three albums, Wilde signed to MCA Records in 1984. Her brother, Ricky Wilde, continued to serve as her producer, though was now assisted by their father, Marty Wilde , who also continued to co-write material. For the first time, Kim Wilde also received a co-producer credit and the album also marked the first time in which she earned a sole songwriting credit, for the tracks "Fit In" and "Shangri-La".
Three singles were taken from the album. " The Second Time " reached the UK Top 30 and the Top 10 in Germany, as well as becoming only her second single to reach the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, where it was retitled "Go for It" and peaked at No. 65. The second single from the album, " The Touch ", was less successful but the third single, " Rage to Love " (remixed by Dave Edmunds ), returned Wilde to the UK Top 20 for the first time in three years.
Prompted by her new record company, Wilde underwent a change of image for Teases & Dares and found herself being recast "in an entirely new light". [1] She changed from a girl wearing secondhand clothes with self-dyed hair, to a Barbarella -inspired sci-fi heroine (by XL Design) for the cover of " The Second Time ". Though this was initially only for the single, MCA Records decided to use the new image for the album cover also, which Wilde objected to. She later claimed that the album sleeve was one of the reasons for its weak sales, stating that it confused members of her audience who still regarded her as the "girl next door". For subsequent single releases from the album, Wilde switched back to an image she identified more with. For the " Rage to Love " promotion, she wore one of her father's Teddy Boy jackets, in keeping with the rockabilly retro theme of the song.
Billboard magazine praised Wilde for combining "techno-pop with a torch-styled edge" and described the sound as "somewhere between Sheena Easton and Debbie Harry ". [2] Rolling Stone described the "randy" lyrics for "The Second Time", written by Wilde's brother and father, as "somewhat perverse" and found her "too bland and docile a singer to generate much heat or to enliven Ricki's stale wall-of-synths production." However, the reviewer reserved praise for Kim's self-written efforts, writing that "Fit In" and "Shangri-La" "have the passive, yearning tone of a jailhouse diary" and expressed hope that the "vivacious, earnest singer might be smart enough to cut loose her puppet strings." [3]
All tracks written by Ricki Wilde and Marty Wilde , unless otherwise noted.

So, consider our breath well and truly taken away. You won’t hear a more gorgeous piece of music today. Tim’s electronica, Kaitlin’s voice and Leah’s piano combine to make a record which sounds like a classic Zero 7 moment that never happened – along with the smooth jazz vibe Emma-Jean Thackray is presently hitting out of the park. The spoken word parts at the start and end only enhance the beauty of this one. An instant classic.
Our dear Grace is back with the 2nd track from what we hope is a new album era. ‘Nothing Moves Me’ contains yet more of Grace’s lyrical genius (I mean “I forced myself to watch a Disney movie” then telling us that even Bambi didn’t prompt an emotional response). Sonically this feels like the inside of a spinning old time musical jewellery box before taking an emotionally fraught turn towards the back end with hints of Kate Bush. We think the sentiment of this one is something we have all related to at one stage or another during the pandemic.
We were drawn in by the beautiful artwork and the fact this is a Ninja Tune release! Our instincts were spot on because ‘You Could Be’ is a twinkling electro house banger. It’s taken from her forthcoming ‘All Hours’ EP which we have pre-ordered in super quick time.
Matilda Pearl has pegged her own music as “mermaid disco” and we love that. We are putting it out there that’d she make super sweet tuneage with our favourite Scandi purveyor of unicorn disco, Ms Maja Francis – what a pairing they’d make. Anyway, now signed to Sweat It Out, ‘What Can I Do?’ is Matilda’s biggest pop moment so far (and it features the funktastic Touch Sensitive to boot).
Another pop album which is going to feature at the business end of our record of the year rundown come December is Ms Gibson’s ‘The Body Remembers’. We shared a couple of our early faves upon release a fortnight ago and now have another pairing to wrap your ears around. The title track along with ‘Love Don’t Care’ have emerged as stand outs (among an album rich with bops and a smattering of heartfelt ballads).
UNIIQU3’s ‘Microdosing’ is Shygirl meets Deee-Lite and therefore an out and out mammoth banger. The beats and rhymes bring the fire and the lyrics deliver an even spicier delicacy! A major dancefloor moment of the summer right here.
We’ll admit to being only casual fans of Hasley in the past……that changes right now with the release of her album of the year (did not expect to be saying that) contender ‘If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power’. Our interest was piqued when we learnt that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were on production duties for this one – they are responsible for one of our favourite soundtracks of all time in ‘The Social Network’. That brooding dark menace is omnipresent and jolts perfectly with Halsey’s pop vocals. ‘Girl Is A Gun’ has jittery electronics and a hooky as heck chorus. Elsewhere ‘Easier Than Lying’ has a frenetic and percussive thump which you just don’t see coming when it smacks you right between the eyes after the opening pair of tracks on the record.
Kat Von D’s album ‘Love Made Me Do It’ is out now and we just purchased it on the basis of the track we are sharing with you today. Bauhaus legend Peter Murphy lends his vocals to this Hurts-esque dark electro gothic anthem. ‘Protected’ is some of the finest synth pop you’ll hear all year and Kat and Peter’s vocals sound like they were made for one another.
We were thrilled to learn earlier today that Erika Vikman’s poptastic self titled album has hit the number one spot in Finland. Our CD just arrived and it’s packed to the rafters with back to back bops and bangers. Here’s ‘Aikuisten Rannekkeet’ for you which kicks off like a Bonnie Tyler stadium anthem before the synths explode into a huge Charlotte Perelli-esque Euro belter.
‘Stellar Lights’ is the new album from Brigitte Bardini and it was released on this very day! We dashed off to Bandcamp first thing this morning to purchase the CD (with complimentary download of course) and are on our second full listen. It’s every bit as delightful as we had hoped after falling in love with recent single ‘Heartbreaker’. The album takes a leaf from Jack River’s accomplished song/notebook by proving you can effortlessly bring both synths and acoustics to a record. Indeed this album is probably the best example of this since Jack’s ‘Stranger Heart’ EP. We are sharing ‘Everyday’ with you as it seems to melt down multiple Goldfrapp eras into one bewitching brew – including the art cinema noir piano sound of ‘Tales Of Us’ along with the electro stomp of ‘Black Cherry’.
