Even though there’s nothing wrong in two human beings talking to each other, in this case, it depends on the country. In those countries where there is pedoparanoia or where sex is on top of most people’s minds (sex-obesession), such as the US, it is not advisable because people will think that the teacher is hitting on the girl. I know it sounds over the top, but it’s really what many Americans would think, sadly.

Is it “okay”? Sure. It is a professionally appropriate thing to do. There are legitimate reasons to have a private discussion with a student of either gender. Realize, however, that a teacher is taking something of a risk. It would be quite easy for a young lady to make a false accusation against a teacher.
I still do it. Knock on wood, I haven’t had a problem yet. It isn’t that I don’t believe that a false accusation could be made. It happens, though rarely. I remember a coworker getting accused my second year of teaching. I don’t really think he did it, but no one aside from him and the girl will ever know for sure. It ruined his career.

There is nothing inherently wrong with this, whether the student is a boy or girl, as long as the classroom door is open and you stay to visible to passersby.
Unfortunately, in the world we live in, it is not a good idea and I would try very hard not to put myself in this position. Due to the fact that there have been some dodgy teachers who have done real things that are wrong, all male teachers are automatically “wrong.” If the girl, or boy for that matter, were to make a claim that you have done something wrong or inappropriate, it is upon you to prove your innocence, not the student to prove your guilt. And even if you are found “not guilty”, you will find it very hard to find employment as a teacher.

I would not consider it okay. The reasons are cultural. We are Indians.
Before my retirement, I was a boss and had young girls as members of my team when I was running my own startup. Even before I have had many lady subordinates in the companies I worked for.
Most of these girls were in their mid or early or late twenties. I was more of a guide and teacher to them than a boss. Even though they looked up to me as a father-figure, I was careful never to close the door to my cabin when I was interacting with them in relation to office work. The door was always open.

It’s OK. It happens, but the teacher must use good judgement. I’ve had many teaching situations where I had a student come to me one on one for instruction. I’ve had this type of situation as part of my schedule as a resource teacher and as an interventionist where I maybe met for 20-minute sessions. Teachers don’t worry so much about it at the elementary level of being accused but common sense must be used always. I always kept my door open. Know your students. Since as a special education teacher I was more prone to work with the more maladaptive students who were more likely to make false allegations. There were some students I’d never work with like that because it would be a poor risk to do so.

I read this thread and I must say that I’m really confused, even distressed after all I’ve read here.
I’m a vocational teacher in Finland and I’ve been doing this for 18 years now. I teach photography and about 80 % of all students are females.
Not once during these 18 years this issue has been even mentioned in any kind of context, be it the safety of a teacher, the student or any situation where the propriety of the situation might come to question. No principal chief has ever mentioned this, there’s been no discussions with colleagues, no nothing. I tried to search for some instructions I might have missed during these 18 years: I found nothing.

Rule number one of teaching: never be alone in a room with a student. Gender is irrelevant here - you are putting yourself at risk by being alone in a room with a student.
That said, this happens all the time. I'll be eating lunch in my room and a student will come in to drop off a paper. Or there will be a student who stays after class to ask me a question. This happens nearly every day.

This may seem extreme, but it is for my students' safety and my own. Some may say it's unfair that male teachers are held to a different standard than female teachers, but statistically males are much more likely to abuse their students. Sometimes a male teacher can get into a situation where he’s alone with a female student in a room, but it’s good to leave the door open and have something like a desk between the teacher and the student, or one of them sits and the other stands (if there is a physical barrier or a difference in height it conveys the absence of closeness). Or, if it doesn’t involve the teacher having to write on the whiteboard to explain something, they can always walk into the hallway and talk there.
It’s really unfortunate that female students are more likely to be treated this way than male students — it makes us less likely to receive legitimate one-on-one help in a subject that’s taught by a male teacher.

What it is, is beyond dangerous for the teacher. As a self-preservation measure, a teacher should never, ever be alone with a student, particularly a male teacher with a female student.
All it takes is one person to see you alone in a room with student to start spreading rumours, which can take on a life of their own and make life miserable. Teenagers, particularly girls, can be absolutely vicious in spreading gossip about each other, and you’ll be caught in the crossfire.
Of course there are things a student might not want to discuss in front of the whole class. But for your own safety, you should make sure there is another person present, and you are somewhere people will pass by regularly. My old teacher also always made sure to sit at t

Of course a great deal depends on culture and local policy. In some cultures a male who is not a family member should not be talking to a female at all (and probably also would not be teaching female students.)
In the university environment, a male professor would have a hard time refusing to advise any female students or to meet with them individually to do his job. I would keep the door open hopefully with a secretary or other offices nearby and able to observe. And as others have said, the issue now transcends the realm of only male - female conversations. Any isolated interaction could become problematic.
