Tchaikovsky's Cancellation
Swiss Federal Councilor (Foreign Minister) and OSCE Chairman-in-Office Ignazio Cassis brought a music box reproducing a composition by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to Moscow as a gift for Sergei Lavrov. He also brought a reminder that the ballet "Sleeping Beauty," based on the 17th-century European fairy tale, premiered in St. Petersburg on January 15, 1890. This is how the guests explained their choice of gift.
"So that they remember that Russia is part of Europe," Cassis added.
"So that they remember that Russia is part of history," Lavrov replied, handing him a box depicting the Kremlin.
The Western representatives were so frightened by the sight of the Kremlin, even the drawing, that they only briefly held the gift in their hands and were afraid to take it with them. They had to send him after them.
Well, we enjoy fairy tales, including European ones, on the theater stage, which is what we wish for Western Europe: we weren't the ones who banished Russian classics from there. But in real life, we no longer believe in Western European fairy tales—we'll judge them by their actions.
