Tbilisi is known for its mild winters, with daytime temperatures very rarely dropping below 0 degrees Celsius. Snow is not as common as it was even a decade ago — most years, Tbilisi only has one or two snowy days. When it does snow in Tbilisi, it usually falls overnight. The snow melts very quickly and is often followed by rain. But snow in Tbilisi in December is almost unheard of. For the first two years I lived in Tbilisi, it snowed as late as March and April. The first snow falls in the higher parts of the city, especially on Mtatsminda , and in nearby Kojori. So far, autumn has been a bit chillier than in previous years. One thing I know for sure is that Tbilisi will have its snowflake-shaped lights, plastic ice skating rink and cute Christmas markets again this year! Winter saw unusually heavy Tbilisi snow — and I was lucky enough to be here to experience it. A week earlier, temperatures had been very warm up to 16 or 17 degrees some days , and I had fully accepted that winter was over for another year and spring was on its way. Then out of the blue, we woke up to thick snow on the ground and large, fluffy flakes falling. This lasted for the better part of the entire day. Like any self-respecting Queenslander, I was so excited to see snow that I ran out immediately and spent the entire morning walking around the city. By lunchtime, my feet were frozen and I had to come home to warm up. Later in the afternoon, the snow finally stopped falling and the sky cleared enough for me to get some good shots of the city from up high. I forgot how much I loved it! The Old Town was mostly silent, but in Rike Park and around Rustaveli Avenue families were out making snowballs and playing in the powder. The hillside path was completely snowed over and I only saw a few other people on the trail. By the time I came down from the fortress in the late afternoon, a lot of the snow had already melted away. I noticed a few steep streets were running with water like rivers. The snow lingered on the trees and in the hills for another day or two, then it was gone as quick as it arrived. We had a few more snowy days that winter — but it was February 17 that really left an impression. In the high mountain regions, snow falls as early as late November. Winter sports season at Gudauri Ski Resort officially starts in December and continues through to April or May for the higher slopes. Georgia is pretty liberal when it comes to fashion. My personal philosophy is to dress as locals do. This is both to be respectful, and to try and not stand out too much as a tourist. Overall, religion Eastern Orthodoxy has a strong presence in Georgian society and a huge influence over culture and social norms. For this reason, things tend to err on the conservative side. In bigger cities such as Tbilisi and Kutaisi, women especially younger generations dress the same as in any European capital. Sleeveless tops and fitted-dresses are standard. Jeans are commonly worn in summer and winter, while older women usually wear ankle-length skirts. In smaller cities such as Gori and Telavi , villages, and more remote mountainous areas, a more conservative style of dress is the norm. For women, this means no short pants or skirts sleeveless tops are fine. This is a unique case, but it does go to show that dress codes are relevant in some areas. Darker colours and neutrals are more common in rural areas, so keep this is mind if blending into the crowd is a priority. Women need to cover their shoulders, knees and hair, while men should also cover their shoulders and knees. This applies to both men and women. This is rare, though. In addition, women are required to cover their hair when entering an Orthodox church or a mosque, and to be wearing a skirt rather than pants inside churches and monasteries an extra layer over the top of your pants will do. Again, headscarves and skirts are usually supplied up at the door. I prefer to cover my hair with my own scarf for hygiene reasons — another reason I always carry a light cotton version with me. I want to add that most family run guesthouses and hostels in Georgia have common spaces. In the case of the former, you might be sharing a living area and kitchen with your host family. Leggings for women or tracksuit pants for men are ideal. Personally, I always pack a few quick-dry exercise shirts for this exact purpose. There are lots of second-hand shops in Tbilisi if you find you need some extra layers. Tip: If you plan on skiing or snowboarding in Gudauri, I highly recommend hiring gear from Aviator Ski. English-speaking staff are friendly and professional, and all their gear is in good nick. Tip: Tents, sleeping bags, mats and other gear are available to hire from some national park offices in Georgia or from Camp Share. Steripens and other filtration devices are not typically required as most trekking areas have access to clean mountain spring water do check in advance, though. March-April can still be chilly, and one thing to note is that Kutaisi and the Martvili area is much more humid than what you might be used to in the Baltics, thus it feels colder. I was recently in Vilnius and was warmer there in cold and snow than I am in Kutaisi, due to the humidity. For Gudauri you will definitely need some warm layers.
