"Martin Taylor is one of the most awesome solo guitar players in the history of the instrument. He's unbelievable!" ~ Pat Matheny ~ Amen to that! I couldn't agree more with Pat Matheny who is also a great guitarist himself. As the saying goes, "It takes one to know one." Jazz Times named him as "Europe's finest guitarist." Since the early Nineties after the release of his first solo album, "Artistry," he became one of the best and biggest selling acoustic guitarists in the UK. He rose to fame and became popular amongst jazz fans for his inherent talent and impressive techniques in guitar playing. "Solo" was recorded in 2005. It is one of the best guitar music that I enjoy listening to along with his other remarkable albums, "Kiss And Tell," "In Concert," "Nitelife" and "The Valley." The disc consists of fourteen tracks which include a set of everlasting standards such as "My Romance," "Darn That Dream," "I Thought About You," "In A Mellow Tone" and "Girl Talk," to name a few. It also introduces the listeners to an original composition by the guitarist titled "True" showcasing his talent in composing music. This is one CD that I heartily recommend to guitar music lovers who appreciate incredible talents such as Martin Taylor. His brilliant soloing, phrasing and finger work will surely captivate the listeners with its lyrical elegance and grace. He is certainly one of the best guitarists the world has ever known. Enjoy the music!

Martin Taylor is so good that company just fouls the nest. Producers may want to lard a CD with guest appearances, but I find, that with few exceptions, that destroys the product. This is all Mr. Taylor, and it doesn't get any better than that. He is such a pleasure to listen to that you would be well advised to add this one to your collection.

Martin Taylor is one of the best jazz guitar players in the world. I'm just sorry I didn't find him sooner.

The recording level on this album is way too high, so it's necessary to turn the volume down almost as low as it will go in order to make this listenable. Once the volume is down, this becomes very listenable, indeed. On track 1 the tone is beautiful, but the improvising doesn't let the melody emerge as it does on track 2, the lovely "True." Track 3 is too much virtuosity and too little music-making. Tracks 4, 6-7 & 11 are excellent treatments of standards. Track 5 is very fast, yet the melody is not lost. Tracks 7 & 8 would have been better with less emphasis on the bass line. Too much bass ruins track 8. On track 9 Taylor puts poignancy into a banal song. Track 10, "Girl Talk," is not a good enough composition for Taylor to devote his talents to it. Taylor's version of "My Romance" is more creative than Wes Montgomery's. On "Some Day My Prince Will Come" Taylor's improvisations obscure the fairy-tale level of beauty of the original. On "Joyspring" Taylor almost equals Barney Kessel's rendition. On the last track, the blues performance stands on its own merits, but isn't as subtle as Kenny Burrell's blues. I love tracks 2, 4-7, 9, 11 & 13-14.

I heard him whacking through Clifford's Joy Spring on the radio and bought the CD based on that one cut. I was not disappointed with the rest.

This album is the pinnacle of solo guitar playing. There is incredible musicianship which is underpinned by amazing technique (however the technique is secondary to the music being made). There is a wide variety of tone, tunes, tempos, voicings. This music can be enjoyed on several levels and I keep coming back to it.

My husband and I saw Martin perform in France and talked to him for a while, he is such a wonderful and very kind man. But oh what a great artist he is. I actually bought the CD for my husband but I'm loving every minute of it. Thanks Martin !!

My one word review of this CD....Brilliant. check it out for yourself and you'll see why "Brilliant" describes Martin Taylor on this solo guitar outing. [...]

I heard about this guitarist whilst listening to "ginge" (can't think of his name @ the moment) on the radio. Jeff Beck was on & he thought that this chap was amazing. Martin Taylor was on the show the next day & having heard this guy play, I had to buy this CD. He plays finger style and I have never heard anyone play like him. Anyone who appreciates how a guitar can be played, will like this - it is something else!

Guitar genius?

Martin Taylor is a great guitarist and has a distinctive style based on his own approach to bass lines, part chords and melody lines. This CD is a perfect example of his style - obligatory listening if you are trying to learn to play jazz guitar (the "Martin Taylor Guitar Method" is the more insightful reference). But, musically, Im not sure it flows in the same way that "Nitelife" or "A Matter of Time" does. All the tracks are very similar in sound and sometimes don't always swing as they should - due, unfortunately to the very virtuosity that he displays. But don't get me wrong. It is still a beautiful sound and probably the most complete sound a solo guitar can make. Definitely worth listening to.

Martin Taylor's phenomenal technique is best enjoyed on his unaccompanied recordings, such as this studio date recorded in 2002 for P3 Music. Much like the late Joe Pass , this brilliant guitarist excels in his explorations of standards such as "I'm Old Fashioned," "Darn That Dream," and "I Thought About You," alternating frequently between playing the melody, chord changes, and a supporting bassline, while never losing focus of the song itself. His treatment of "Moose the Mooche" starts slow before exploding into an intricate improvisation at a brisk tempo, while also inserting a hilarious excerpt from "A Night in Tunisia" as well. A delicious, low-key rendition of "Li'l Darlin'," the breathtaking "In a Mellow Tone," (long a part of Taylor's repertoire), and his crisp navigation of Clifford Brown 's constantly shifting bop classic "Joy Spring" will either amaze or possibly frustrate fledgling jazz guitarists. The bittersweet ballad "Tennessee Waltz" is rarely heard in a jazz setting, but Taylor's warm interpretation is poignant even without hearing its lyrics. If that isn't enough, his original compositions, including the bluesy "Wasabi Greens," and the tender ballad "True" showcase yet another dimension of Martin Taylor's formidable talent. The intimate sound of this session adds to the value of this highly recommended CD.
