I'd never heard of this movie but stumbled on it. Not knowing much about the Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton romance I decided to watch to learn more about what made them such a big deal couple. The movie takes place after their second divorce, but Taylor wants Burton back. Her desire to get back into the groove with him – and the push-pull dynamic that results – is what drives the movie. The acting is wonderful all around. West is brings a lot of depth to his role, and Bonham-Carter is spot on. Hearing her nail Taylor's voice is a treat. Aside from the performances, one of the things that really stands out about this movie is the way it can take a series of very specific snapshots in the lives of two famous people having a tug-of-war decades ago but deliver a very universal underlying theme. Because the underlying theme of unrequited love is so strong, you walk away from this one thinking that you know exactly how Elizabeth Taylor feels when her last gambit to get Burton back fails.

Glad that I did not. HBC is a great actress. She's far better than the over hyped Meryl Streep hands down. What she lacks in Taylor's resemblance, she nails by getting her personality. Dominic West nailed RB's voice, but he acts with his face (the forehead wrinkle) so I can never see him truly in character. Don't skip over this one. It's a brief moment of Taylor/Burton's history together, but it's a must see brief.

This was just a tiny sliver of Liz and Richard, sometime after their 2nd divorce, toward the end of his life, and their final work together. Would like to see a more in-depth movie of their tumultuous years from the scandal of their affair on the set of Cleopatra, and the years beyond. That work probably would have to be a miniseries. They are impossible to duplicate, since both are one of a kind, but Helena Bonham Carter and Dominic West did a believable re-creation of two of my favorite actors. I imagine this appeals to people of older generations, since we recall those headline scandalous years. I enjoyed it.

I was surprised that, though I love Helena, and her Liz, I thought Dominic was sterling as Richard Burton. It was a charming, if predictable, production. Just like the relationship of these two celeb titans, it dragged a bit by the end, which was really, after all, about their ending. You can't blame ET for loving RB passionately, past his prime. He was irresistibly charming, talented and sexy. That voice!! Afterward, Liz truly rose to the mark, by checking into Betty Ford and then becoming an advocate for AIDs victims. For all her star makeup, she was incredibly down-to-earth.

At no point did this movie seem believable. The lead actors are fine but the charisma that Taylor and Burton had just can't be imitated; it's either there or not and unfortunately for this movie, it's a not. Perhaps because of that, the movie just seemed like an assemblage of actors acting. Taylor comes across as an abusive bully; Burton just comes across as boring. The final scene seemed contrived to put on a sweet gloss, a layer of icing on an inferior cake.

I was taken back on how well West played Burton. Considering that todays films are horribly made and the actors are horrific this was, to me, a jewel. Great acting by both.

This film is anchored by two very direct and subtle performances by Helena Bonham Carter and Dominic West. I was expecting a film about the entire Burton/Taylor relationship but this film deals only with their final professional collaboration in 1983. I was a bit disappointed by that but I quickly got carried away by the performances. This is basically the story of very public people coming together professionally but with ulterior motives. Elizabeth Taylor is still very much in love with Richard Burton and enters into the theatrical production of "Private Lives" with the hope of winning him back even though he is involved with another woman. Richard Burton, trying to fight off his addiction to alcohol, has respect for the theater and his profession and sees this as an opportunity to find closure with Taylor and taking their relationship to a more mature level. If you have ever been in love or tried to work through a difficult relationship then you will understand and absorb this film. Attention to detail from the costume design to the set decorations is first rate even down to the music of the times. It takes you awhile to see how much effort Helena Bonham Carter took to carve out her characterization of Elizabeth Taylor particularly with the voice. Dominic West is very well cast and he blends very well with Bonham-Carter. You will be disappointed if you expect a high powered, glossy and melodramatic version of Taylor & Burton. The performances are not theatrical or over the top. They are finely grained.

It is not a big action, sweeping epic. It's a poignant moment capturing the end of an era for two people who truly loved one another but had to face reality that perhaps they didn't bring out the best in one another. The intimacy of this moment is captured in the simple but beautiful sets, repeated, just as one might find oneself living daily life, fulfilling responsibilities - all the while a deeper more intricate dance is working itself out underneath it all. I've watched it several times, the humor of their ferocious spats and interplay is most entertaining - Helena Bonham Carter was so much fun to watch.
