So for the second night in a row the taxi driver messed with the meter. He wanted nearly 200,000 for a 7 min ride. On the second day I shouted at the driver and told him not to con me as I know the fair is 50,000. To which he instantly dropped the fair by half. Then he claimed he had no change so I got my wife to stay seated in the car whilst he came into my hotel for change the final fee was 50,000. The rule for now on.. be firm stand your ground soon as they know you won't be messed around they cave in. These drivers are turning our lovely stay into a frustrating one.
Have taken scores of Hanoi GRAB taxis over a month and 99.9% of them have been absolutely brilliant, no complaints. However i have to say the one con artist is worth a mention.. firstly he did not locate the destination, however i agreed to pay and walk...he parked right on a busy corner and 3 of my friends were nearly collected individually on exiting on the safe side, there were a number of horns going off and a driver pulled up on his side and gave our con artist a mouthful of Vietnamese... while all of this was happening he refused and haggled a 70000 change... i held firm despite the mayhem all around me... he realized i was going nowhere and coughed up the change... wow what a strategy.. Develop and invite crazy and fleece the worried foreigners... Bad rap for 99% of the honest drivers
We arrived in Hanoi train station at 5.30am on the night train from Sapa. Took a taxi - insisting on a metered ride - to nearby hotel only 7 mins or so away near old quarter and the driver said it was dong 565,000! I knew it was way wrong but my son had been vomiting for 8 hours on the train, our hotel wasn’t opened up as so early and the guy argued the price and as I fumbled through my wallet saying it wasn’t right he literally plucked the notes from my hand to make up the price he asked. I’m so annoyed I didn’t stand up to him more, now I’m super pissed and plan to go to the police. Admittedly we should have been more prepared, but it’s a bad outcome for Hanoi community and offputting for tourists. Now we are avoiding taxis and doing less than we would have otherwise. I think it was Thu Do taxis, silver and green. Avoid.
Taxi group in hanoi when arriving at 10pm after sapa-hanoi. 2 pers. 3 km of journey and the taxi meter was hidden by one of our big bag. I checked and saw 100 displaid from the beginning. I assumed it was fine for fixed price at night. The tactic of the thief is to stop at 50m away from the hotel in a dark spot and asked for the 160000. Assuming the price was a bit higher we didn’t complain much even he said it was the night fare. Then he lighted a blue UV style light to let us look for our money. But the awfull blue light was bad and i used my phone torch. We gave a 500’000 note and he said back showing a new 20’000 note that it is not the right note. Come on! We didnt want to move out and I ran to get some local backup from the hotel. When back 1 minute later with reinforcement with hotel staff the taxi driver had already gave back the note and he was eventually paid 160k dong. Conclusion: check carrefully the speed of the meter (we think it went too fast), and show the note and announce the value before to hand over. We couldn’t use Grab app as a phone number was required. A good deal would have be to get a phone number + internet SIM card. Just internet doesn’t let you use the app.
We go from cathedral to mall in Honai only 6km away. The taxi driver asked for 625,000VND. It's a robbery. I hope your company will do something at least fire him is fare enough to the people he cheated. Thank you. 我們從河內的教堂到附近的mall,才短短的6公里,司機要價625,000VND,這已經是詐騙的行為,希望你們公司能處理並開除他,他已經騙很多人了
On my first day in Hanoi, I requested a cab from Old Quarter to get back to my hotel. I gave him my address off of the hotel card. It started to rain heavily. He stopped to try to find my address in the dark and ended up stalling. Told me 'sorry but go'. Pointed to the general direction he thought my hotel was (because remember, he pulled over to try to find it). Did I also tell you it is now 9 PM at night. I'm wearing black, its dark outside, it's pouring down moonsoon like rain, I'm alone and a woman. He wanted his cab fee before I could get out. $120,000 VD. I was slowly trying to figure it out, stunned, a bit afraid being left where I didn't know. We had just gotten to the hotel not more than 4 hours before so I wasn't sure where we were at. Got impatient and grabbed $100,000 VD, popped the hood and said 'go' before getting out of the car. Found out later, the average cab ride is $60-80,000 VD. I not only was soaking wet, but got yelled at my a moped driver to 'GO HOME!' and then soaked to my waist by a car that drove by in deep water. Finally found the hotel, walking in. The staff just looked me up and down but didn't say anything.

I took a taxi from the Vatican Museum back to my Hotel on 14 Feb 19. When we got to the hotel by a very circuitous route, the driver told me the fare was €27. I gave him €50 and was expecting change. Meantime he was telling me something about watching the door. He then had a €10 note in his hand and said €27. I apologised and gave him another €50. He did the same again. I only had 2 x €50 notes the rest was small notes. I am 100% certain on this as I had just checked to see how much money I had. I paid him but that b****** got €100 of my money and ruined my day. The authorities are not keen to take action unles you have all the details. So keep your eyes on your money and ignore any distractions until you have paid. I see from other reviews that others have had the same experience. BE AWARE. BE VERY, VERY AWARE.
Took a taxi to Vatican City from near Termini and quoted 20 Euros. Guy drove like a madman and when we arrived handed over 20 Euro note. He then said 'no - twenty Euro' and he had a five in his hand. I thought I had made a mistake and apologized and swapped it for a twenty. On checking my wallet after realized he had conned me and swapped 20 for a 5 so cost us 35 Euro plus 1 Euro tip. On return journey different taxi quoted 27 Euro - when we said only cost 20 to come he said because of one way system. When we arrived at Termini gave him a 20 and a 5 together with a 2 coin - he said no - you only gave me ten and he had 2 x 5 notes in his hand. I said 'no - I gave you a twenty and a 5 and not paying anymore - call the Police if you like and got out of Taxi - he drove off fast - should have took photo of his car req and put on internet. Do not trust any of them - we are pensioners and they took advantage of us.
1. No legal official rates they ask how much they want . 2. When they realise that you don't speak Italian will ask for more money. 3. When it's a short distance they don't take you , they will say : wait for the next cause I'm done for today . Uber have to be legal in Rome quickly. Tourist for sure do we have such a bad impression of Rome with this kind of people .
It was an unpleasant surprise. We met unkind drivers with no clear fee. Our ride was terrible, uncomfortable and expensive. If you are in Rome use Uber or NCC NO THE WHITE CARS.
DONT take this taxi. They are unable to make their job. They dont speak english and you will lost your money ! Just NO
they were there before time and very helpful while taking us to the airport and taking us to the exact terminal
