Analytics India Magazine (Sanjana Gupta)Tata Electronics and Bosch have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop capabilities in electronics and semiconductor manufacturing in India jointly.
The collaboration will focus on chip packaging and manufacturing at Tata Electronics’ upcoming facilities in Assam (chip packaging and manufacturing) and Gujarat (wafer foundry).
The agreement also includes plans to identify and pursue local projects in Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) for vehicle electronics. Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD of Tata Electronics, and Dirk Kress, executive VP of semiconductor operations at Bosch, signed the MoU.
Bosch, a global supplier of mobility technologies, is seeking to strengthen its electronics sourcing through local partnerships. The company recognises the increasing demand for advanced automotive electronics and their critical role in shaping the future of mobility.
“This move signifies Bosch’s and Tata Electronics’ commitment to local collaboration and acknowledges the strategic importance of the burgeoning automotive sector in India,” Kress said.
Thakur added to this, saying the collaboration supports Tata’s goal to “create a holistic semiconductor and electronics ecosystem in India,” while also helping Bosch meet its technology product needs. “Our collaboration is yet another significant step towards creating a leadership position for the Indian electronics manufacturing sector on the global stage,” he said.
The company’s Dholera (Gujarat) chip plant is being built in collaboration with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) and Himax Technologies, US-based Synopsys, and Japan’s Tokyo Electron Limited (TEL). It brings together global expertise in the domain of chip making.
The company also made headlines for starting chip exports, marking a significant milestone for a nation that has long imported nearly all its semiconductor requirements. The first outbound shipments, though modest, symbolise a new phase in India’s industrial trajectory.
The appointment of KC Ang, a veteran in semiconductor manufacturing, to lead the group’s chip efforts brings credibility and operational experience to what is still a developing domestic industry.
Last year, Tata Electronics also partnered with Synopsis and Tesla to expand its semiconductor capabilities.
