The Tarzan yell or Tarzan's jungle call is the distinctive, ululating yell of the character Tarzan as portrayed by actor Johnny Weissmuller in the films based on the character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs starting with Tarzan the Ape Man (1932). The yell was a creation of the movies based on what Burroughs described in his books as simply "the victory cry of the bull ape."
Johnny Weismuller giving his patented Tarzan yell. Apparently this yell, and yes it really is Weismuller, was used in every Tarzan film thereafter regardless of the actor playing Tarzan.
The soundmen, from these reports, did not perfect the cry until 1934. Yet, there is no appreciable difference between the cry heard in Tarzan, the Ape Man and Tarzan and His Mate. Buster Crabbe, who married Held's daughter, always supported his father-in-law's story. Others, like Maureen O'Sullivan, sided with Johnny.
Tarzan's famous yell was described by Burroughs as "the victory cry of the bull ape." When it came time to film the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie Tarzan the Ape Man, the producers wanted that sound to be something unique and memorable. The origin of the distinctive cry is a matter of some debate.

The famous Tarzan victory cry was introduced to the world in Edgar Rice Burroughs' first Tarzan novel, Tarzan of the Apes. But the actual sound of this jungle cry was left open to interpretation. In all likelihood the first Tarzan yell was created in 1918 by the first screen actor to portray the Lord of the Jungle on film: Elmo Lincoln.

The next known Tarzan yell was voiced by James Pierce in the 1932 Tarzan radio serial. The cry actually sounded like "Taaar-maaan-ganiiii," which is means "white ape." ERB was quite involved in this production and since Pierce was his son-in-law there it is quite possible that this is the cry the Ape Man's creator had in mind.

Presumably, the first interpretation of the ape-man's cry officially graced the ears of audiences during this stage show, but we don't have any recordings of it. Tarzan's first foray into sound recordings came in the form of Tarzan the Tiger of 1929.
