Granted I did not understand a single word they were speaking nor understood their language but subtitles and the excellent acting and outstanding cinematography kept us glued to the screen from start to finish. This film set on the island of Tanna somewhere in the South Pacific, depicting a true story of a couple who decided to marry for love, rather than obey their parents' wishes. This custom of "arranged marriage" deals to force unite two individuals in marriage is very prevalent even in more modern societies around the world but his being a remote tribe I was very surprised to see how civilized they were to resolve their conflicts and change their customs to save their tribe. Marie Wawa plays the role of the young to be bride as Wawa. But I think the main character is Wawa's young sister Selin was a joy to see on screen. Her charisma and energy is simply adorable. This movie Tanna will be written as one of the very best films about a South Pacific island area's ever made and picturization was outstanding. We must take some lessons from old tribes and customs and make end of heated conflicts and war and make this world a better place for all of us. Rating the movie experience with five stars!

AWESOME STORY LINE. Star crossed lovers break the tradition of their Negrito tribes in Tana, Vanuatu, some 200 miles ENE OF New Caledonia and 350 miles WSW of Fiji. Outstanding cinematography, great acting and a feeling for the inflections of the local language in the subtitles. My stepdad served in the Sea Bees during WW2 in the Solomon Islands and when I was a young boy, showed me pictures of bare breasted native women that he didn't show mom! He said they were the only available women, so... A Chief's grandson and a local girl fall in love and buck tribal custom of giving exchanging young women with neighboring tribes to secure peace among them. Because "Love Marriage" was not recognized, these two make the supreme sacrifice to be together, choosing the Miltonian, "Better to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven", so to speak. The younger sister of the protagonist, also showing a stubborn streak, gains wisdom and perspective way beyond her age by her sister's willing self-sacrifice, even though she told the elders of her tribe where to find the love birds. A primitive tribe thus makes peace with traditional enemies and recognizes that they must accept a new premise, Love marriages. Chastely, and sensitively accomplished filming with a subject that easily would lend itself to gratuitous sexual encounters. The rejection of "Christian" (Jehovah Witnesses perhaps, just referred to as "Witnesses") Mission life as a means of escape is quickly chronicled as the hapless couple is eventually brought to bay by warriors of their own tribe, intent on keeping the extant tradition of marrying young women off to other tribes. All in all, extremely well done and a very engaging, anthropological even story line portraying a very foreign culture that values tradition above all else and then changes perspective! An extremely rewarding film for the viewer with a lot of application to our own, very shallow, culture.

The cinematography alone makes this film worth watching. Tanna is based on a true story that took place in Vanuatu in the late 1980s. The Yakel people act with heart felt emotions in this story and where treated with dignity by the small production crew. It is a lens into a culture that is unfortunately slowly disappearing. There are many great lessons to be learned from this film, if one is open to it. The special features, behind the scene clips, and the interviews are actually all worth watching and add to the experience of the film. It is a shame that there are not more quality films like this than there are. This film made it on my personal list of being one of my top 23 films of all time and one of the top 2 love stories.

I've often wondered about the term, "civilization." After watching this film, and with thoughts inspired by other cultures considered "uncivilized," I've come to the conclusion that the people of the west must be the most UNcivilized of all. This film shows us the many possibilities of civilization. We have traveled far from it. Beautiful, important and timely film. This movie is beautiful, heartbreaking, multilayered and moving. That it exists at all is miraculous; that it is as excellent as it is is a gift to anyone who sees it. It opens a window on a world few encounter anymore. Also this movie is a work of art - there are images I will never forget, such as the one of the lovers in front of the volcano (you will know it when you see it) and the men in front of enormous tree roots. The editing is superb. The people who portray people like themselves could not have done better. Seamless storytelling. Emotional and real. I am grateful that this film exists.

The photography is pretty, but woefully repetitious at times. The story is merely Romeo and Juliet, set on a Melanesian South Sea Island, so it might be nice for kids. There are no sex scenes, at least I didn't notice any, and I likely would have as I am a little old lady (a mean one though). Some parts were rather unrealistic...I can't elaborate without spoiling things. I wish I knew someone to give it too. When I say pretty, I am not referring to the myriad male fanny-cracks or the shockingly fallen breasts. It's amazing...all the young females have their breasts covered in some delicate manner or other, but the older women, past breast feeding age, presumably, have VERY bare breasts and they toss them in your face every chance they get. Hey, at least it's realistic, I guess. I really wouldn't recommend, unless it is for kids. Don't worry, there's nothing sexual about all the bare bottoms and fallen breasts.

It is so good. It was a cinematic masterpiece with a much needed cultural weight so significant the images alone can move you. The movie is a poignant combination of prime cinematography and story that authentically represents the history of a people with a sprinkle of impact. This movie that acts as a cinematic cultural luminary has hopefully set the standard for other films with a story about an unvalued society and the traditions that surround it. In other words, it was so beautiful, I cried.

It's amazing that there are people still living like this in the world we live in. These are truly beautiful people and the way they live probably won't exist much longer, so it is fascinating to be able to become a witness to their culture. The story isn't a deep one and could be dismissed as a riff on Romeo and Juliet except it really happened. How you can get people who have never seen a movie (supposedly) to act so natural in front of a camera and repeat dialog is beyond me. I've seen movies with professional actors who couldn't do as well. It's a movie worth watching.
