Take a redhead to the beach and they’ll leave with skin the color of their hair. Experts have always assumed this tendency towards sunburn means fair-skinned folks can’t make much melanin, the pigment that gives us some sun protection. But British researchers say that just isn’t so.
University of Bradford scientists compared the isolated cells from what they deemed “Celtic-type” (very fair) and “Italian-type” (olive) skin. When stimulated in a lab, the fair skin defied expectations by creating just as much, and sometimes more, melanin than the olive-tone skin.
So shouldn’t that mean redheads are capable of getting a tan? Not necessarily. Despite making as much melanin as darker skin in the lab, the researchers found that the fair skin also had higher levels of prostaglandin-E2, an inflammatory chemical that could explain the tendency to burn.
These findings could mean progress in the effort to better protect fair skin from sun damage.
“Our research shows that melanocytes may play a role in UVR-induced inflammation, so targeting these cells with anti-inflammatory interventions could offer a new way of protecting more vulnerable skin types from sunburn,” says professor Des Tobin. “Clearly something within fair skins is also preventing melanocytes from making protective melanin to prevent the harm caused by UVR and we will be focusing further research on this area.”

Oct 6, 2022 Natural redheads often have pale skin and freckles, so it is likely your skin will fall under type one or type two skin. According to the FDA, type one skin is 'pale white' and 'always burns - never tans.' Type two is 'white to light beige' and 'burns easily - tans minimally'. This is where the question 'can gingers tan?' comes from.
Here are some of the findings: D294H is the most common MC1R variant associated with red hair, fair skin and poor tanning ability. Variants R160W and D294H are also strongly linked with red hair and paleness. Meanwhile, R151C, R142H, R160W and D84E are related to having red hair only, with no particular influence over skin tone.
After we burn, the heat stays in our skin and keeps burning us for quite a while afterwards. After you shower, apply aloe vera and ice packs. If you plan in advance, you can freeze your aloe vera in ice cube trays and get a two for one. Also sometimes it's okay to take the loss of tanning slowly and get a spray tan .

Most people associate red hair with pale skin, but what about those rarest of rare gingers who can tan? Nope, we’re not describing an impossible mythical creature, these tanning ginger beings actually exist.
Within the appropriately nicknamed ginger gene, also known as the melanocortin 1 receptor, or MC1R for short, there are more than 80 variants. And given that every person has two variants of a gene (one from each parent), these 80+ variants make heaps and heaps of possible combinations, with each having their own way of dictating not only hair colour and skin tone, but also whether you have freckles or can get a tan.
Various studies have explored the meaning of each variant. Here are some of the findings:
D294H is the most common MC1R variant associated with red hair, fair skin and poor tanning ability. Variants R160W and D294H are also strongly linked with red hair and paleness.
Meanwhile, R151C, R142H, R160W and D84E are related to having red hair only, with no particular influence over skin tone.
There are dozens of other variants with different powers of your pigmentation, but to try to put it as simply as possible, being ginger doesn’t necessarily dictate your skin tone, tanning ability, or freckle-to-paleness ratio.
Each of these variants and which two copies you end up with is all hereditary. Each of your parents passes down one copy of a variant, and the combination works together to decide your mix.
Perhaps you have two copies of R151C (related to red hair only), or one R142H and one R151C, which also give you red hair, but have no particular effect on your skin colour. This means that if your parents can tan, this trait could come from elsewhere in your genetics, giving you gloriously ginger hair, but also a golden glow.

It’s hard to do anything but burn as a ginger, but you can do it.

The life of a ginger is quite interesting. We are known for being crazy white and burning super easily. Being ginger, I have taken it upon myself to defy people’s expectations and have a few tricks to make any ginger quite a few shades darker.
The most important thing I have learned is to progress slowly. If you go lay out in the sun all day, you will burn, no matter how much sunscreen you use. Starting out going to a tanning salon and laying in the lowest level bed exposes your skin to the same rays as the sun, but in very safe, controlled levels. This will teach your skin to better absorb the sun and tell it to release melanin, a hormone in your skin that causes you to be tan and burn less. Not only do you want to do this regularly, but you want to also use a tanning lotion so you don’t dry out and burn. I would suggest the lotion COCO NUTZ by ‘Supre’ it’s cheaper than a lot of others, works great and smells delicious. When your body is used to the low level bed you are tanning in, move up a level. I would suggest starting this in the winter so that in the summer you can be less worried about burning and have the ability to take in the sun in.
Another important component of tanning is sunscreen. When you go outside, you will burn if you do not use it correctly. Use a stronger sunscreen on your shoulders, ears, and any other place that tends to burns more for you. For the rest of your body, use a light tanning sunscreen to protect while allowing you to slowly tan. I would suggest ‘Banana Boat Ultra Mist Dry Oil Broad Spectrum Sun Care’ in SPF 8.
At times, burning is inevitable being a ginger, so don’t worry if you get burnt. Don’t panic. Take care of it quickly so you don’t lose your tanning progress. Right after you realize you are burnt, take a cold shower as cold as you can bear and sit in the cold water for as long as you are able. After we burn, the heat stays in our skin and keeps burning us for quite a while afterwards. After you shower, apply aloe vera and ice packs. If you plan in advance, you can freeze your aloe vera in ice cube trays and get a two for one.
Also sometimes it’s okay to take the loss of tanning slowly and get a spray tan. You can go into your salon and ask for a spray tan and you will definitely look tan. Just make sure you leave it on as long as possible, but never go anywhere important without showering it off first. You can also use the special lotions and body washes, I would suggest ‘Norvell’ to make it last as long as possible.
In the end, it may be frustrating to be a ginger, but being unique is worth it. You can do our best to get tan, but we all know gingers freckle better than anyone else. You can always work to be a little bit tanner. Don’t let your whiteness defeat you.

Im a 100% dinger (although who can say he’s a 100% of anything nowadays). Ive been working in gardens for almost 20 years…being a ginger you burn quickly sure…but that doesnt mean you cant get Tan. People with a vitamine D deficiency tan really quickly, and because ginger people are always at max votamine D since we produce it ourselfs, getting a tan is difficult…but not impossible it just takes a very long time…trust me, i have a good tan . Build up slowly…dont be frustrated when you loose most of your tan during the winter…the next summer it will be slightly easier…and build up every year. But dont sit inside and avoid the sun because you might burn…Little steps at a time
Going abroad helped kick start my skin into changing colour. I burn so easily 20 mins in the sun with sunscreen and im raw. I apply cream every hour alternating between 50 and 30 and when laying out i rotate regularly, i also apply an accelerator over the top of the lotion. Cold shower / bath after and moisturise like crazy. Tbh im not much browner (probs just freckles joining together) this has taken some effort. But i AM browner

For those of you who burn without tanning, consistently keep lotion on your skin. Reapply very often and continue to use sunscreen when you’re going out. You feel a bit oily but you’ll get a tan when it heals. That was the only way for me to get one.
I used to work in the sun for 16 hour days. Forgot my sunscreen one day and burnt myself like crazy. I just kept lotion on it at home and sunscreen on at work. Turned to a tan in a week and I was able to use less sunscreen each day.
Wow! SPF 8? I’m An Irish and polish ginger. I don’t think I’ve ever used any sunscreen below spf 90 tbh!
I’m not a full ginger I have a mix of like blonde in my ginger hair but I get a lot of freckles on my face but not that much anywhere else. After being in the sun my freckles get darker along with my skin but I still tan a little. I usually burn a lot but for the past few weeks not that much I’ve just been getting a few shades darker.

All of my friends are so much darker than me. I have a slight tan but have no idea how to make it darker. I only ran after my sunburnt skin peels off. Do you have any tips? I’m not old enough to go into a tanning salon and I’m outside a lot. I just want to fit in…
I tent to burn a lot and I figured out that after my burn heals, my skin becomes a little bit darker.
