I liked it - for the most part. There were definitely a few things that turned me off, like some of the things Tammy said and did, (which were frankly, kinda gross!). But - as the movie went on, those things were mostly offset, by the overall personality of Tammy, which I couldn't help but have empathy and appreciation for. Her character grew on me and often wound up being endearing. I also liked Tammy's impulsive and wild, "wicked" side - sure, she and Grandma both were often inappropriate, didn't anticipate consequences, definitely ticked some people off, and even destroyed property along the way, but hey - - no one was seriously injured, and Tammy and Grandma were doing the best they could, with what they knew as well as with what they didn't seem to know. I liked the male actor who played Tammy's love interest, also. He and Tammy's interactions were actually believable - and not the usual disingenuous, and downright "soupy" romance crapola that too many other movies try to pull off. Loved how all the bits and pieces of Tammy's life and the outcomes of the other characters were funnily wrapped up and came together at the very end! Overall, although it was definitely more offbeat than most comedies I've seen, it's a funny flick.

It is almost impossible to find a clever, much less intelligent, comedy these days. My Boomer generation was lucky to have lived when the original cast of Saturday Night Live (SNL) was filled with comedic geniuses who later produced a fair number of truly funny movies - the kind you watch again and again. Sadly, there has been nothing like that since, and "Tammy" is a case in point. "Tammy" starts with the shopworn premise of the massively dysfunctional prole family. I'm OK with that - it's a formula that one could milk forever, but at this point you'd better be doing something clever with it. Comedians want you to believe that proles (people whose job prospects are limited to fast-food joints and the like) are uncontrollably profane, and sadly this movie goes with that flow. Our prole lead character "Tammy" has a very bad day at work, gets fired, and returns home to discover her husband cheating on her. She packs up and walks over to the house of her inexplicably upper-middle-class mom, with whom Tammy's alcoholic prole grandmother lives. Being kindred spirits, Tammy and her grandma hit the road for a cross-country trip. So the plot is a replay of "Thelma And Louise", and to underscore this the grandma character is played by Susan Sarandon, and the two women amuse themselves by picking up guys at a redneck bar and then getting in trouble with the cops. Back in the day, the original-cast Boomer SNL comedians were hardcore leftist libertines who used their movies to inflict their sophomoric ideology on viewers, but the indoctrination was minimal. Today's crop is no different, but the insufferable brainwashing occupies much more of the movie and it's much more in-your-face. Rather than drive off a cliff, our two heroines are saved from the cops by an inexplicably rich lesbian cousin who appears out of nowhere, and at this woman's house we are treated to a "lesbian party" and a lecture on the value of having your act together and working hard. Since the sexual orientation of this character adds absolutely nothing to the plot, we may surmise that "straight" viewers are being treated to a life lesson, which is, apparently, that lesbians can have their act together and be rich just like everyone else; thank you Melissa for "straight"ening us out on this. Adding insult to injury is Dan Akroyd, who has a non-comedic walk-on part at the very end just so that the movie could advertise that Dan Akroyd is in it. Perhaps the saddest thing about "Tammy" is Sarandon, whose character despite being in her 70s sincerely tries to convince us that life is still just a big frat party, and getting laid in the back of your car by some loser you just met in a bar is the cat's meow. My guess is that Sarandon herself subscribes to this. Sorry Sue. The frat party ended 50 years ago, and the rest of us have moved on. I give the movie two stars rather than one because it did have some decent yuks in the first half.
