The passive and hybrid Q-switching and mode-locking of solid-state lasers, dye lasers, semiconductor lasers and gas lasers is reviewed. The dynamics of saturable absorbers and reverse saturable absorbers is illustrated. The nanosecond pulse generation by passive and hybrid Q-switching of low-gain active media is described. The picosecond and femtosecond pulse generation by passive and hybrid mode-locking in low-gain and high-gain active media is analysed. The performance data of passively and hybridly mode-locked cw femtosecond dye lasers are collected. The pulse shortening of ultra-fast pulses with saturable absorbers in intra-cavity and extra-cavity configurations is discussed.
An experimental demonstration of the locking of longitudinal modes in a CW, solid state laser by means of a saturable absorber is reported. It is established that the influence of a filter is important only in the region close to the minimum diameter of the beam, in the telescope formed by the resonator mirrors. Steady state generation of ultrashort pulses was achieved only at the lowest dye concentrations, when the peak power of the pulses was least among the three regimes involved.
Locking of longitudinal modes in a cw solid-state laser by the use of a saturable absorber was demonstrated
experimentally for the first time. A study was made of the dependence of the nature of lasing on the density of
the absorber.
A theory of kinematic mode locking is derived for a homogeneously broadened luminescent line, that makes use of the dispersive properties of the active medium, gain nonlinearity, and the Doppler effect at the moving mirror. Comparison with experimental results shows that the theoretical model described gives a qualitatively correct description of kinematic mode locking in a CW YAG:Nd3(+) laser. Its numerical results are correct within a factor of two, and light is shed on the physical mechanism that singles out a single pulse over the axial period T. We report on the characteristics of active‐passive mode‐locked phosphate‐glass oscillators. These highly reliable oscillators operate at 1.054 μm and are characterized by the absence of satellite pulses for pulse durations t p ≳80 psec. They have very high peak‐to‐background contrast of 107 to 108. Transform‐limited pulse widths between 80 and 600 psec are reliably generated using a pair of intracavity etalons. The reproducibility of the pulse durations is better than ±10%, that of the pulse‐train maximum about ±10 to 20%. Single‐pulse selection with ±5% amplitude fluctuation has been achieved with threshold‐pulse selectors. For pulses shorter than 50 psec, satellite pulses are occasionally observed. A theoretical explanation for this observation is given.

A single pulse selection method is described using only passive optical elements, which can select a single pulse out of a train of equally spaced short laser pulses separated by any pulse distance between a few ps and a few ns.
15-THz trains of a few-tens-of-femtoseconds optical pulses were generated by modulation instability oscillation in a colliding-pulse mode-locked dye laser. A repeatable and stable modulation instability regime was obtained with the laser operating in the anomalous-dispersion regime and with a low saturable-absorber concentration. Variations of the modulation with the pump power and the amount of dispersion in the cavity are in good agreement with modulation instability theory.
It is shown experimentally that the combination of passive and kinematic mode locking in a CW laser makes it possible to broaden the capabilities of each individual method. In addition, ultrashort pulses (USP) which are stable in terms of amplitude and duration can be obtained. We have developed a mode-locked diode-pumped Yb:KGW laser generating 100-fs pulses with an output power of 126 mW. The corresponding optical spectrum has a 13.4 nm FWHM bandwidth and is centred at 1037.4 nm. In the multiple pulsing regime, bound states of solitons with rotating phase difference were observed. Consecutive solitons were separated by less than 1 ps.
