The South Kitakami Belt in the northeast Japan is unique in presence of a thick Paleozoic-Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. The Permian sedimentary succession in the Maiya area of this belt is divided into the Nishikori, Tenjinnoki and Toyoma formations, in ascending stratigraphic order. The Tenjinnoki Formation includes the Yamazaki Conglomerate Member...
Structural analyses based on field survey and peak-temperature estimations using Raman spectra of carbonaceous-material thermometry were conducted for the Cretaceous subduction complexes on the central Kii Peninsula, southwest Japan, where there is a direct contact region between the Sanbagawa high-P/low-T Metamorphic Complex (MC) and the Shimanto...
This study describes the geochemistry of basaltic blocks in the Daifugendake and Wasabidani complexes (Chichibu belt) and the Unokawa and Takaharagawa complexes (Shimanto belt) exposed in the Yoshino area of the central Kii Peninsula of Japan and discusses the tectonic implications. In this study, we examined 5 samples from the Chichibu belt and 10...
With the revision of the Geological Map of Japan 1: 200,000 “Toyama”, zircon ²³⁸U–²⁰⁶Pb ages of pre-Paleogene plutonic rocks in the area were measured, and the igneous history in the Hida Belt was discussed. Of the Hida Older Granites, the intrusion age of the Hayatsukigawa Granite in the western area is 224.8 ± 1.7 Ma, and that of the Unazuki Gran...
The Cretaceous Shimanto accretionary complex in southwestern Japan consists mainly of trench-fill deposits and formed in an active continental margin setting along the East Asian margin. Here, we present U–Pb ages of detrital zircons from the complex and compare youngest detrital zircon ages obtained from trench-fill sandstones with true deposition...
The Shingai Unit in the Kurosegawa Belt is subdivided into sedimentary zone and mélange zone. Sandstones of the sedimentary zone vary from lithic wackes to feldspathic arenites in ascending stratigraphic order. However, the timing of this change and the depositional ages are not constrained. U-Pb age spectra for detrital zircons from sandstone samp...
This paper reports whole-rock chemical composition, texture, and lightness of the intrusive rocks in the eastern Shitara area, Aichi prefecture, central Japan. The intrusive rock bodies at three localities show dark to gray in its central parts and gradually change into whitish toward the marginal parts. In Futto, the SiO2 content of the central pa...
Miocene dikes and sills are widely exposed in the eastern Shitara area, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan. Whole-rock chemical composition, grain size, lightness, and the alteration ratio of the intrusive rocks from three outcrops in the Shitara area are described in this paper. The central part of the intrusive rock bodies, commonly dark gray, gradu...
The depositional age sequence of Cretaceous accretionary complexes in the Kouyasan Belt of the Shimanto Belt (central Kii Peninsula, SW Japan) is poorly constrained owing to a lack of age data for the Unokawa Complex in this belt. We conducted U-Pb dating of detrital zircons from three sandstone samples of the Unokawa Complex. Detrital zircon U-Pb...
Ocean plate stratigraphy (OPS) within an ancient accretionary complex provides important information for understanding the history of an oceanic plate from its origin at a mid‐ocean ridge to its subduction at a trench. Here, we report a recently discovered chert–clastic sequence (CCS) that comprises a continuous succession from pelagic sediments to...
en It is essential to clarify the lithological, structural, and chronological relationships between the Sanbagawa Metamorphic Complex (MC) and the Cretaceous Shimanto Accretionary Complex (AC) for understanding the tectonic evolution of SW Japan. To this end, we carried out a detailed field survey of the Sanbagawa MC and the Cretaceous Shimanto AC...
This study constrains the provenance of the trench-fill turbidite sandstones of the Jurassic accretionary complex (Chichibu accretionary complex) in Southwest Japan using detrital zircon U–Pb ages data. Zircons from all sites (six sites) yielded mainly Precambrian and Permian–Jurassic ages. The Precambrian zircons were derived from the North China...
Laser-ablation ICP-MS U−Pb dating was carried out on rock samples from granitic dikes of the Hida Metamorphic Belt at Kagasawa, Toyama City, where Precambrian Rb−Sr whole-rock ages disagree with Triassic (240-230 Ma) CHIME zircon ages. Two medium-grained granodiorite samples yielded zircon ²³⁸U-²⁰⁶Pb weighted mean ages of young age clusters of 241....
We investigated the geological structure around the boundary between the Jurassic Chichibu accretionary complex (AC) and the Cretaceous Shimanto AC in the Yoshino area (central Kii Peninsula, SW Japan). The Chichibu AC in the study area is divided into the Daifugendake and Wasabidani complexes. Bedding plane in the Chichibu AC strikes E-W and dips...
Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was used to determine U and Pb isotopic compositions of detrital zircons from sandstones of the Takaharagawa, Akataki, and Makio complexes, which are parts of the Cretaceous accretionary complex of the Shimanto Belt, central Kii Peninsula, Southwest Japan. The Takaharagawa Comp...
The Permian Akiyoshi Belt, which is the oldest unmetamorphosed accretionary complex in Southwest Japan, plays an important role in understanding the origin of the Japanese Islands; however, its tectonic affinity is still not well constrained. Herein, we present the first Hf isotopic data for U–Pb dated detrital zircons of the Late Permian sandstone...
We conducted U-Pb dating of detrital zircons from three sandstones of the central section of the Akaishi Group, which is part of the Shimanto Belt in the Akaishi Mountains. The youngest single-grain ages are 113.6±2.3 Ma (1σ), 114.1±1.6 Ma (1σ), and 100.8±1.2 Ma (1σ) from west to east. The weighted mean ages of the youngest clusters are 115.4±1.4 M...
This study presents results of measurements of over 800 palynomorphic specimens of lenticular microfossils from the two remote localities of the 3.4 Ga Strelley Pool Formation in the Pilbara Craton, Western Australia that represent different depositional environments and thus different habitats. It is demonstrated statistically that the two populat...
The Akiyoshi Belt in the Inner Zone of Southwest Japan is made up of a Permian accretionary complex, the main component of which is the Late Permian Nishiki Group that mainly consists of sandstone, mudstone, felsic tuff and a minor amount of chert and conglomerate. We employ multiple methods, which includes sandstone petrography, detrital garnet co...
Porphyry Copper Deposits (PCDs) dominantly form in convergent plate margins genetically related to volcanic arcs. However, their temporal relationships with active volcanism are less clear. Active volcanic activity is often considered to impede the formation of PCDs and some workers have concluded that PCD formation must take place at times of volc...
We have investigated the Mugitani Formation located in the structurally upper part of the Cretaceous accretionary complex in the Shimanto Belt, central Kii Peninsula. The Mugitani Formation is newly divided into two units: the Izuo Unit and the Sebato Unit. The Izuo Unit is composed mainly of mudstone, broken beds of sandstone and mudstone, and mix...
en The Ryoke Metamorphic complex has undergone low‐P/T metamorphism and was intruded by granitic magmas around 100 Ma. Subsequently, the belt was uplifted and exposed by the time deposition of the Izumi Group began. The tectonic history of uplift, such as the timing and processes, are poorly known despite being important for understanding the spati...
We performed U-Pb dating on detrital zircons from sedimentary rocks (e.g., sandstone and tuff) of the Kuruma Group in central Japan. The youngest ages are from sandstone of the Jogodani and Gamaharazawa formations, which yields ages of 187.7±1.2 Ma and 189.4±0.9 Ma, respectively. These formations are located in the stratigraphically lowermost part...
We carried out the U-Pb dating on detrital zircons obtained from tuffaceous sandstone in the Nyunokawa Formation of the Shimanto Belt in the Kii Peninsula to clarify its depositional age. The youngest peak age from the Nyunokawa Formation indicates 63.0±1.8 Ma (2σ). On the other hand, the age of detrital zircons from the Otonashigawa Group indicate...
Three pieces of coniform conodonts were discovered in the Aso limestone body in Fuketsu Cave, Chichibu Belt, Mie Prefecture. Although the genera and species of the discovered conodonts have not been identified, they have features similar to those of Late Triassic conodonts (e.g., Zieglericonus rhaeticus Kozur and Mock). Our discovery of conodonts a...
The 3.4-Ga Strelley Pool Formation (SPF) at the informally named 'Waterfall Locality' in the Goldsworthy greenstone belt of the Pilbara Craton, Western Australia, provides deeper insights into ancient, shallow subaqueous to possibly subaerial ecosystems. Outcrops at this locality contain a thin (<3 m) unit of carbonaceous and non-carbonaceous chert...
Undated terrigenous strata distributed in northeastern Toyama Prefecture, central Japan, have been correlated with the Middle Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Tetori Group, based solely on lithological criteria. Within the sequence in Toyama Prefecture, the Kurobishiyama Formation conformably overlies the Mizukamidani Formation, and the Uchiyama Format...
In this study, the chemical and optical features of detrital garnets from the Middle Permian to Upper Triassic sandstones in the South Kitakami Belt, Northeast Japan, were examined to reveal the tectonic movement in the provenance. The sandstones contain a large amount of detrital grandite garnet grains with a wide range of andradite content. Among...
Geochemical mapping of ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr ratios in Shikoku Island and the Kii Peninsula of Southwest Japan was performed using 233 samples of stream sediments (<180 μm). The spatial distribution of ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr ratios successively increases from northern to southern geological units, with a gap at the Median Tectonic Line (MTL). In the Inner Zone divided by t...
A new microfossil locality for the ca. 3400 Ma Strelley Pool Formation (SPF), in the Pilbara Craton, Western Australia, was discovered in the Panorama greenstone belt. Large and morphologically diverse microfossils (>20 μm, up to 100 μm, along the major dimension) are abundant in a carbonaceous laminated black chert of shallow water origin that was...
The Japanese Islands comprise a complex assembly of allochthonous continental shelf deposits and subduction-related accretionary complexes. The paleogeography of Permian clastic strata was restored based on chemical analysis of detrital garnets and chromian spinels, which are useful for provenance discrimination.Detrital garnet assemblages from the...
Detrital garnet provenance analysis was carried out on sandstones of the Cretaceous Yukawa Formation in the Shimanto belt of central Kii Peninsula, Southwest Japan. The Yukawa Formation is an upper continental slope deposit of late Albian to Turonian age. The sandstones of the Yukawa Formation in central Kii Peninsula are feldspathic-lithic sandsto...
The chemical characteristics of detrital garnet have served as relatively reliable and definitive indicators of the major tectonic settings of sedimentary units in many parts of the world. In Southwest Japan a multidisciplinary approach combining sandstone modal, heavy mineral and garnet compositional analyses of the Cretaceous upper continental sl...
