It doesn't have to be on a human as long as it's a nice looking tail. Although in general I prefer it when the tail is on a more bipedal creature. Some of my favorite tails belong to Charizard and Renekton(From League of Legends) for example.

No I've never had or used a faux tail myself. I do want one though, but only as a part of a larger costume.
Texture plays a small role, I generally like more reptilian tails but that's more for their shape and size over the texture.

I do have a preference, large tails similar to the image I pictured is my preference by far. I always have trouble describing a tail I like as I can get rather picky at times but I usually know when I see one.
