Honestly... Shocking & Stomach Turning.
I tried to walk into this with an open mind and initially naïvely assumed this would explore Taboos in a more placid "Hey look at these strange weird cultural quirks / oddities" way, but what I saw instead was stomach turning, especially in regard to the treatment of animals. The senseless barbarity and butchery fully on display was overwhelming and shocking at times. Savage and inhumane from a civilized western perspective; a brutal reminder that some humans still live guided by a stone age mentality in a myriad of ways. The narrating presenters / experts try to cast the scenes in a "Well, we can't judge what we can't understand" sort of light, along with the classic "We need to ensure we preserve these cultures, otherwise they'll be lost". To be honest though... ... sometimes I couldn't escape the feeling that there was no ACTUAL value being created here; it was nothing more than desperation meeting destructive belief / tradition, thus, I often felt myself strongly disagreeing with the premise that these snake-oil approaches NEEDED to be kept active vs simply preserving them in history books. As an example, a tribe in Africa had a woman claiming to be some sort of spirit vessel, and all she really did was take on a masculine voice/tone, have people slit live animal throats (including a calf), leave the animals wriggling or flailing on the ground as people danced in the blood gushing from the animal's neck... Then, all she said to each person who came seeking help & advice was "everything is going to be okay"... All I could do was sit there stunned in traumatic shock and horror, wondering how anyone could possibly take her seriously, let alone believe that this cruelty would solve their issues. One woman even came seeking help for her sick daughter; internally I was screaming "Take her to a doctor!". In my view, the sad reality was that some of these communities would have been better served with a proper education focused on science, and better access to healthcare; worrying about 'preserving' their culture, as far as I could tell, was RELATIVELY a non-issue. ANYWAY, the production quality WAS decent, and it WAS interesting, BUT given that it was shot "in your face" David Attenborough style (think "nature shows that explicitly / vividly showcase death in the animal world"), this show is not for the squeamish, and if you're an animal lover, I'd STRONGLY recommend you take a hard pass on some episodes (though, unfortunately, no warnings are given in advance). Oh, and if you're on the sensitive side, DO NOT WATCH RIGHT BEFORE BED; give yourself plenty of time to recover and unwind. I regard myself as an animal lover and empathetic towards the plight of others, so my review should likely be regarded with that lens in mind.

This one is more of a slow burner, but so good. I hope there is a season 2 although if it finished here, it would be a full story. Tom Hardy does it again and again. He plays these hard brooding tortured characters so well.
Incredible series!
A captivating and brilliant masterpiece
We want a sequel!!
!! some spoilers ---- do not read if you haven't watched ----- I enjoyed this serie, something different and fast evolving. I haven't quiet get some characters or development like the sister brother relationship at first it seems intriguing with the magic and spirits twist, I thought that was something interesting to play on, then all of a sudden after 6 episodes chasing each other the sister character disappear like nothing happened? She was into a terrible marriage, raped (so it seems) by her husband, beaten, forced to an exorcism and once she finally gets free (although in a violent way...) she is rejected by her lover and committed suicide? I hope there is another side of this and it does not end there. Anyway what was really interesting about the series was the main character story, the battle with himself the spiritual shamanic universe he is into, his fighting demons. looking forward to a better written season 2!
A lot of action, mood and twists. But I don't understand what James gained by his machinations. He could have left London on his ship in episode one and saved a lot of lives. Why stay? Why scheme? What was the point of it all?
This review is based on Season 1 (in case other seasons are released later). Engaging viewing overall, but the performance is almost entirely carried by Tom Hardy. The writing is uninspired and with very little character or plot consistency. Plot elements are introduced and just evaporate; other plot elements are introduced but seem contrived because they are there to create the basis for something that happens later, but don't make any sense in the context of what has happened up to that point. And don't watch this show if you're into historical accuracy, because it is short on that. Despite these problems, I still recommend the show because Hardy's performance is quite engaging and stimulating.
Absolute gold, best I've seen of Hardy yet
One of those TV shows I don't think anyone saw it coming....As in, ask your friends if they have seen it the answer is probably no. haha...
This show is quite dark, but it's writing is so well done. It is filled with great dialogue, mystery and intrigue, and characters that are extremely well made. Tom Hardy and his dad Chips Hardy wrote it, and they said they'd make a season 2 whenever they find that they finish the writing of it.
I look forward to it, if ever finished, but even if not its a well made show that stands on its own.
Brilliant. Very dark and violent but Tom Hardy plays it so well. Hope there are more series to come
Great series, I was so impressed by the photography and details. Every episode is full of great cliffhangers.

After a sluggish start, Taboo takes hold as a mysterious, dark, and often brutal period drama with plenty of promise as a series -- most notably evident in Tom Hardy's exceptionally watchable performance.
