There are plenty of royal rules when it comes to spending time with the Queen . These include not turning your back on her, not speaking until spoken to, not sitting down until she does, and not starting to eat before she does. While anyone coming into the Royal Family might feel a little overwhelmed by the protocol expected, there’s more.
There are certain phrases which are off the table, and using them might see a guest cause accidental offence.
However, the Queen is known for her good sense of humour and has been seen merrily relaxing the rules with outsiders, so guests will likely have some leeway.
Family members, however, will need to get up to scratch with the dos and don’ts.
One particularly hated word, surprisingly, is one which applies to the royal women.
The Queen hates the word ‘pregnant’, according to palace aides.
A palace source told Us Weekly the Queen finds the term “vulgar” and prefers to refer to pregnant women as “in the family way”.
It doesn’t seem the royals are expected to follow the rules when they aren’t with the Queen, however.
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, recently spoke about how “any woman when she’s pregnant is particularly vulnerable”, so she’s clearly not been banned from all use of the word.
But when it’s time to visit Buckingham Palace, the Duchess will be sure not to make any second-baby announcements using the P-word.
There are some other words never uttered by the royals.
‘Tea’ instead of ‘dinner’ is one of them - the phrase is usually used in the north, and the royals go for ‘dinner’ or ‘supper’.
‘Portion’ is also a no-no, with the royals referring to their ‘helping size’ instead.
An odd one is the word ‘pardon’, which the royals allegedly take to be quite rude, preferring ‘sorry’.
You’ll never hear the Queen mention the word ‘toilet’ in a million years - if you’re ever a guest at the Palace, ask for the ‘loo’ or ‘lavatory.
The royals don’t refer to their parents as ‘mum’ and ‘dad’.
Instead, they call their parents ‘mummy’ and ‘daddy’ or ‘papa’ for the entirety of their lives.
The royals also don’t like the word ‘perfume’, preferring ‘scent’.
And finally, and perhaps most surprisingly banned, is the word ‘posh’.
While the word seems to define the very essence of the Royal Family, they don’t like it or use it, preferring ‘smart’ instead.
