There are many theories about why we dream:
– Sigmund Freud said that we dream to fulfill our deepest desires and wishes.
– Ernest Hartmann argued that dreams act as a form of a therapy – they help us to deal with traumatic events, worries, or depression.
– Harry Fiss proposed that the purpose of dreams is to help us solve problems.
– Antti Revonsuo suggested that in dreams we identify real-life threats and practice dealing with them.
– Kelly Bulkeley claimed that dreams give us a possibility to try and practice something important to us like, for example, a speech.
Whose theory is right? Whose theory is wrong? Nobody knows. What we do know is that dreams are a gateway to the subconsciousness.
The subconscious mind works as an enormous library of memories. It has unlimited space, capacity, and stores information about everything that happens to you throughout your whole life. By the age of 20, your subconscious mind manages to write hundreds of books about your life experiences, thoughts and desires. All of them are stored and can be accessed whenever necessary.
Now, the subconscious mind isn’t objective or rational. Neither does it think independently. The subconscious mind is, in fact, a servant that obeys the commands of your conscious mind. So, it can either write novels about love, compassion and happiness, or stories about death, pain and tragedies, which later manifest in your dreams.
Those of us who often dream disturbing dreams may wonder why . Why does our subconscious mind decide to torture us in our sleep? Well, there are two theories that can explain it.
According to the first theory, the subconscious mind doesn’t provoke disturbing dreams without a reason. In fact, the purpose of dreaming disturbing dreams is not to torture you, but to help you deal with your emotions, especially if you suppress them. Thus, if, during a day, you felt scared, stepped out of your comfort zone or experienced humiliation, your subconscious mind reported it.
Now, if you can’t consciously deal with those negative experiences, your subconscious mind can remind you about them in your dreams in a form of a symbol. That symbol can be anything. However, in a number of cases, the disturbing dream happens to be erotic.
Let’s take a look at the top five most common disturbing sex dreams and discuss why you dream them:
Getting raped in a dream can be horrifying. It can also give you cold sweats and make you wake up suddenly in the middle of the night. Why do you dream of getting raped? Well, the dream can be a symbolic reflection of what’s happening in your life. It can symbolize powerlessness, anger, humiliation and fear. If you have a terrorizing boss, fight depression or raise a child you didn’t want to have, you can dream about being raped. Through the dream, your subconscious mind communicates to you that you lost power over something and you desire to regain that power.
2. Dreaming about having sex with someone of the same gender.
Having a lesbian or gay sex can be weird, disgusting or shameful. If you’re homosexual or bisexual, such a dream can be a symbol of insecurity in your sexuality. Perhaps you’ve problems about accepting yourself the way you are and suppress your true desires? If yes, it can provoke dreams of having sex with someone of the same gender. However, if you’re a heterosexual person and dream about lesbian or gay sex, you shouldn’t worry. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a homosexual person deep inside. Usually, the dream is a mere reflection of deep femininity or your own manliness.
3. Dreaming about cheating on your partner or being cheated on.
First of all, dreaming about cheating or being cheated on is only a dream. It’s unlikely anything like that is happening in your life. So, take a deep breath and try to relax. Such dreams, in fact, often symbolize relationship problems. If you’re the one who cheated on your partner in a dream, it can mean that you feel guilty about something and can’t deal with it. If you’re being cheated on in your dream, it can be a reflection of your feelings: the insecurity within the relationship and lack of trust.
4. Dreaming about having group sex.
Participating in an orgy in your dream can mean that you feel overwhelmed, overworked, and overburdened in real life. Thus, if you have a lot to accomplish, multitask all the time, and can never focus on one thing, you can dream of having sex with several partners at once. This way your subconscious mind tries to communicate to you that it’s time to slow down a little bit. So, try to make your life simpler.
No matter if it’s about having sex with your parent or sibling, an incestrous dream can be both scary and disgusting. However, it doesn’t symbolize anything terrible. If you’re dreaming about having a sexual intercourse with your parent, it can symbolize coming of age or becoming a parent yourself. If you dream of having sex with your brother or sister, on the other hand, it can reflect your deep desire to be closer to them. Also, it can symbolize your wish that they accept you or forgive you. All in all, through the dream, your subconscious mind tries to tell you that deep inside, you want to have a better relationship with your sibling.

After all, as we’ve already discussed, dreams can be symbolic and have meanings. But, there is also a second theory about why we have disturbing dreams once for a while.
According to that theory, dreams aren’t a psychological phenomenon, but purely physiological. Thus, they can represent merely your brain’s attempts to make sense of various thoughts that come to your mind during a day as well as your experiences and memories.
Thus, disturbing erotic dreams can, in fact, have no secret meanings. They can be a mere byproduct of your imagination or daily activities. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Yes, it is. There are two ways, which can help you stop dreaming disturbing dreams or nightmares and start dreaming about pleasant things.
The first way is to practice positive thinking . Let me remind you about something. As was previously discussed, the subconscious mind is a servant of the conscious mind. Thus, dwelling on negative thoughts during a day can result in having unpleasant dreams at night. So, in order to start dreaming nice dreams, try looking at the world and your experiences in a more positive way. Not every misfortune is a tragedy, after all.
The second way to stop having disturbing dreams is to practice lucid dreaming . A lucid dream is a dream during which a dreamer knows they are dreaming. Thus, they can control it. Moreover, since there are no rules, laws or moral codes in dreams, you can do whatever you want in a lucid dream: fly, practice magic or lie on a beach in an exotic country. The only limit you have is your imagination.
Dreams, whether positive or negative, can be either meaningful or meaningless. It’s not the best practice to lose numerous hours trying to figure out their hidden meanings. Instead, focus on the real life, for its the source of your bad dreams. Solve your problems, practice positive thinking and find your happiness. Then, you’ll see a change in your dreams. They will improve.

I am a 19-year-old bisexual girl. I have had a dream of a sexual nature about my father. It began with him telling me about sexual things he did to me when I was younger, and then I asked him to show me. I was my current age in the dream. I woke up extremely confused and disturbed .
Dreams with sexual content are not necessarily about sex. They are complex metaphors for unconscious material. Even if people we know appear, our dreams are not necessarily about them personally. When seeking to understand the meaning, one must consider the feeling of the dream. Did you have sexual feelings during the dream, or were there other emotions? Feelings, though, are only partial clues. Some believe that every person in your dream represents a part of yourself.
Your dream might actually be about a deep longing to become more closely connected with some baffling – to you – aspect of yourself, perhaps something you understood at an earlier age but have lost touch with. Dream analysis can be illuminating and healing, helping to make unconscious thoughts, feelings and processes conscious, so do seek answers.
I can understand why you might be troubled by this complex dream, but it is not about incest, or your father. It may be about some other “taboo” – such as your sexual orientation, but instead of being afraid, delve into its profoundly important, true meaning.
