It’s been a long time coming for this. Taboo, the offbeat period drama starring Tom Hardy and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, may officially be returning for a second season, with Hardy’s “devil Delaney” heading west after taking his revenge on London in the stylish and unsettling first season, but the wait will continue, according to Deadline.
It was back in March 2017 that the gritty BBC drama was officially renewed for a second season on the network. However, five years after the show’s premiere, there is still no sign of it, and there are still no answers to the burning questions of fans that the season finale of the first run of the show needs to address.
“We’re thrilled that people want to know how this happens next and that the BBC and FX are up for more excursions with the devil Delaney and the league of the damned,” said executive producer Ridley Scott after the show’s renewal.
It was previously announced that the show’s creator Steven Knight would continue to explore many realities as he takes his band of misfits to a new world, thanks to the support of FX and the BBC, partners who could not be more suited to collaborating on groundbreaking work.
With season 1 of Taboo now available to stream on Netflix, fans may be wondering when season 2 will arrive on our screens and what we can expect from the show going forward.

Taboo Series 2 was commissioned by BBC One, and it is currently in production. Taboo Series 2 has been officially renewed.
At this point, it appears that Taboo season 2 will not premiere until late 2024 at the earliest.
Taboo season 2 has yet to receive an official release date, owing to the fact that production on the new series has not yet begun. Knight, on the other hand, provided an update on season 2 of the show in November 2021, revealing that the majority of it had already been written.
During an interview with Collider, Knight confirmed that “six of the eight [episodes] have been written” and that they are “working on getting all of the stars to align so that we can get our star [Hardy] back on set.” As a result, despite the fact that Hardy was extremely busy, he predicted that filming would begin as soon as “early 2023.” This suggests that we won’t see it until the end of the same year at the earliest, if not later.
While waiting for the final season of Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight’s gangster drama, Hardy and his Taboo co-star Stephen Graham both appear in the sixth and final season of the show.
Hardy portrays Jewish gangster Alfred “Alfie” Solomons, and Graham portrays dockworker Hayden Stagg, both of whom are from Liverpool.
However, the two have yet to appear in any scenes together on-screen.
The following actors and actresses have expressed an interest in reprising their roles in Taboo season 2.
While it appears that Tom Hardy’s James Delaney will return, it is less certain that the series’ supporting cast will be brought back on board.
Given that both Jessie Buckley’s Lorna Delaney and Tom Hollander’s Cholmondeley were seen in grave condition following a battle with the redcoats, it’s unclear whether or not these characters would make it to the western frontier.
Other characters who we might see again include Stephen Graham’s Atticus, Edward Hogg’s Michael, Mark Gatiss’ Prince Regent, and Scroobius Pip’s French Bill, to name a few examples.
Zilpha, played by Oona Chaplin, Dr. Dumbarton, played by Michael Kelly, Stuart Strange, played by Jonathan Pryce, and Thorne, played by Jefferson Hall, all died during the course of series one.
According to what happened in season 1, Tom Hardy’s James Delaney and his cohorts will be traveling west to Ponta Delgada in the Azores in order to meet US intelligence agent Colonnade for the first time in season 2. With the second series, “Taboo travels west and becomes a little bit more narcotic, more opium-affected,” according to Steven Knight, the show’s creator.
“I’ve planned out a sort of geographical route for the thing to take,” says the author “In a conversation with Collider, he added his thoughts.
“I have a destination in mind, which is always helpful when embarking on a long journey such as the one that writing three eight-hour essays represents. It is beneficial to know where you are going.”
In series two, it’s expected that Delaney and company will travel to the United States, where Hardy’s eccentric character will be able to learn more about his late mother’s Native American heritage and stake his claim to the Nootka Sound region, which served as the setting for the entire series’ action.
A number of other plot threads remain unresolved, including the mystery surrounding James’ tattoo and his confrontations with both the East India Company and Mark Gatiss’ Prince Regent, all of which we can expect to be continued in future episodes of the show.
Hardy shared some ideas for season two with Esquire magazine back in August 2021, stating: “You could go linear, which would be a continuation of time; you could drop prior to London, or you could quantum-leap through time! We’re still experimenting with different ideas. I’m not sure if I should go the traditional route – there’s already a series of those written – but I’m not sure if that’s the best course of action.”
Hardy went on to say: “My thoughts went something like this: ‘Say they make it to America, or they make it to Canada; fast forward to 1968, the Tet Offensive, the Vietnam War; take a look at the CIA, the Viet Cong, and the French in Saigon….’
“Create new family dynamics based on the Delaney family tree outside of London, using new people, while reflecting on how history and corruption repeat themselves. The Sixties are still considered taboo, and they are still considered period. There’s something entertaining about it.
“Alternatively, should we go back to the 1800s? What are the Napoleonic Wars? ‘Was it the American Revolutionary War?’ But nothing has crossed my heart, mind, or desk that has caused me to exclaim, “That’s it!” So I’m putting out the fire.”

Co-creator Steven Knight was initially hopeful about the franchise, and he opted for a tripartite structure. Now, the face of anti-hero ‘Venom’ and his human counterpart Eddie Brock, Tom Hardy barely has much time to move forward with the show. With a new ‘Mad Max’ film being announced and the possibility of a third ‘Venom’ movie , the actor-producer seemingly has his plate full.
But in August 2021, Tom Hardy sounded pretty excited speaking to Esquire about the future of the show. He said , “The second season of Taboo is really, really important to me, and it’s taken a lot of thinking, because I really enjoyed the first one and I want to be really fulfilled by the second one.” Although it does not hurt to hope, it appears that we will not see the second season anytime soon. Moreover, Steven Knight is also busy creating a slew of miniseries for television and the Jake Gyllenhaal starring film ‘Rio.’ Therefore, if the script for the historical fiction crime series is finalized by 2022, we expect ‘Taboo’ season 2 to premiere sometime in 2024 or later .
Almost all prominent cast members whose characters are alive by the end of the first season should reprise their roles. Tom Hardy will possibly reprise his role as the rogue anti-hero James Keziah Delaney, against Leo Bill as Benjamin Wilton, and Jessie Buckley as Lorna Delaney. Some characters’ fates are decided in the first season, which means that the actors may not reprise their roles in the follow-up season.
Franka Potente may not continue her journey with the show since Helga is shot to death in season 1. Oona Chaplin’s return is also improbable since her character, Zilpha Geary, shares a similar fate by falling off the rails. It remains to be seen if David Hayman, Jonathan Pryce, Mark Gatiss, and Stephen Graham will return as Brace, Sir Stuart Strange, Prince George, and Atticus, respectively. However, Tom Hardy has not dismissed the possibility of the second installment having an entirely new cast. If that is the case, we have to wait a bit more for further announcements.
Notwithstanding the show’s subtle hints about the world of the undead, the series is about war, colonies, and freedom. All the mud and macabre suggestions culminate into a characteristically dark and devastating finale. Loyal Brace is thrown out of the League of the Damned, and Zilpha looks for freedom in the ice-cold waters of Thames. James, who is serving a wrongful sentence, is further distraught to hear the fate of Zilpha.
James blackmails Strange into arranging for his escape. On the other hand, Lorna and Atticus free Helga, and together, they board the ship. But there remains a traitor, who has to die, and James has to escape the Prince and a company of redcoats. In the end, he sets sail for a new adventure in the Azores, although there are some casualties.
The second season seems to have a lot of room for exploration. It can move forward in the direction of the Azores or go back to James’ backstory and chronicle Horace Delaney’s (Edward Fox) life. In the interview with Esquire, Tom Hardy teased that the show’s sophomore edition could explore James Delaney’s time in Africa or go further back to the Napoleonic Wars. The actor-producer also hinted that the series could move in far-flung directions along the Delaney bloodline. Season 2 could begin with the League reaching the US and then Canada. We might even see a time jump that would bring the storyline to the turbulent late 1960s.
