We issued an updated research report on Oracle Corporation ORCL on Apr 1, 2016. On Mar 15, Oracle announced mixed third-quarter fiscal 2016 results. While earnings came ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate, revenues lagged the same. Sales were primarily impacted by adverse currency translations related to the strengthening of the U.S. dollar. The company has been seeing solid growth in its cloud business (up 40% year over year), especially in software-as-a-service (SaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) business driven by increasing demand from enterprises. Encouraged by the robust performance, the company also increased its share buyback plan by $10 billion. This will be cushioned by Oracle’s strong cash balance ($50.8 billion as of Feb 29, 2016). Recently, the company also unveiled a novel range of offerings to facilitate organizations in transitioning their operations from on-premise to cloud. Such initiatives are likely to drive growth in the long run. Apart from the cloud, Oracle continues to benefit from its leading position in the enterprise software and database management system (DBMS) software market. Per the Forrester Wave: Enterprise Data Warehouse report, Oracle held the leading position in the database space in the fourth quarter of 2015. However, the company’s ongoing business transition is expected to weigh on revenue growth over the next couple of years. Oracle is working toward gaining a significant part of its revenues from SaaS compared with legacy on-premise licensing business. But as SaaS revenues will not be recognized upfront as in the case of license business, it will hurt top-line growth in the near term. In addition, the company has recently filed lawsuits against companies like Alphabet GOOGL and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company HPE, which can be additional concerns. Oracle carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). A better-ranked stock in the same space is Mentor Graphics Corp. MENT, sporting a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
