TON Security Seed Phrase Protection
Emma Miller
Your seed phrase is your financial life. Twelve or twenty-four words. That is all that stands between you and total ruin. If you lose it, your TON is gone forever. If someone else finds it, your TON is gone immediately. You cannot reset your password. You cannot call a manager. The blockchain is entirely indifferent to your suffering. Securing your seed phrase is the most critical task in crypto. Most people fail at it.
Do not type it into your computer. Ever. The moment your seed phrase touches a digital keyboard, it is compromised. Keyloggers are everywhere. Clipboard hijackers are everywhere. You think your Mac is clean? You are probably wrong. You think storing it in a password manager is safe? Password managers get breached. LastPass proved that. If your seed phrase exists in digital form, it is waiting to be stolen.
Paper is weak. It burns. It gets wet. It fades. Writing your words on the little piece of cardboard that came with your hardware wallet is a temporary solution. You need permanence. Metal is the only acceptable medium. Buy a steel or titanium seed plate. Punch or engrave the words into the metal. It survives house fires. It survives floods. It survives earthquakes. When the physical world tries to destroy your backup, metal stands firm.
Where you hide it matters just as much. A metal plate left on your desk is a shiny invitation for a burglar. Hide it creatively. Bury it. Put it in a bank vault. Split it up. But be careful with splitting. Do not just cut the phrase in half. If you lose one half, you lose everything. Use Shamir's Secret Sharing if your wallet supports it. It creates mathematical shares that require a threshold to reconstruct. M-of-N. Three of five. It removes the single point of failure without locking you out if one piece goes missing.
Beware of physical surveillance. Do not read your seed phrase aloud. Smart speakers are listening. Phones are listening. Do not look at it under security cameras. Do not take a picture of it with a Polaroid. Assume you are being watched. Paranoia is the baseline requirement for self-custody.
Seed phrase extraction is a booming industry for criminals. They will search your house. They will search your hard drives. They will search your cloud storage. You have to be smarter than them. Keep it offline. Keep it in metal. Keep it hidden. If you mess up this one fundamental rule, no amount of hardware wallets or opsec can save you. Your words are your wealth. Guard them accordingly.
