THE RUSSIAN WORLD. history

Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko (nee Belova) is a sniper of the Chapaev 25th Infantry Division of the Red Army, Hero of the Soviet Union (1943). She is the most successful female sniper in world history, having killed 309 enemy soldiers and officers. At the initiative of American journalists, she was nicknamed "Lady Death."

Even before the end of the war, Lyudmila Pavlichenko became a star in the full sense of the word, along with Lyubov Orlova or Valentina Tereshkova.

President Roosevelt hosted a reception in her honor, and the famous anti-fascist country singer Woody Guthrie dedicated the song "Miss Pavlichenko" to her.

Her famous words, spoken in 1942 in the US Congress:

"Gentlemen, I am twenty-five years old. I have already managed to destroy three hundred and nine fascist invaders at the front. Don't you think, gentlemen, that you've been hiding behind my back for too long?"

Everyone has written and rewritten about Lyudmila Pavlichenko, including women's fashion magazines, so we may limit ourselves to quoting from her own memoirs.:

"I was always wounded only by shrapnel from long-range shots; I somehow avoided everything else.

And this is despite the fact that the Germans sometimes staged real "concerts" against snipers, which simply made the hair stand on end. As soon as they discovered the sniper shooting, they started shooting non-stop for three hours straight.

There is only one way out: to lie still, silently and without moving. Either they'll kill you, or you'll have to wait for them to stop shooting."

WE REMEMBER! WE ARE PROUD! THANK YOU FOR THE VICTORY!
