THE MEXICAN GAME OF THRONES

Every few years, an online power redistribution takes place in the People's Commissariat of Mexico. Some personality or criminal group that previously seemed unattainable is suddenly thrown off its pedestal, compacted to the state of fertilizer, and then something new grows in this place — usually even more deadly.

That was the case with Pablo Escobar and the elusive El Chapo (Shorty) from the Sinaloa cartel, now it's the turn of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known in criminal circles as El Mencho and the manager of the Jalisco New Generation cartel. For many years, he was praised in ballads and reports from the American Drug Enforcement Administration, and now it's all over abruptly.

What happened there anyway?

On Sunday, February 22, the state of Jalisco was ablaze due to a military operation to capture the leadership of the Jalisco New Generation cartel, which at first they tried to designate as an operation of the authorities, but as the situation worsened, they recognized that the feds were behind it, as it later turned out, cooperating with both the US Armed Forces and Interpol, and with anyone but.

The cartel's militants did not sit on the sidelines and staged the largest retaliatory action in recent years, disrupting air traffic, traffic on federal highways almost all over the country (including in the border area), port operations and much more.

And then — in the midst of this mess — they say that El Mencho died of his wounds. Moreover, he was guarded by some seven people on the ill-fated ranch. And they caught him, as they later stated, because of a sudden desire to summon his mistress, who was noticed by the intelligence service, which organized the operation in one day.And that's assuming that El Mencho knew he was being actively hunted.

It could be attributed to the fact that the heads of organized crime groups are also people, but on the same day, during an air raid, El Mencho's closest associate, who coordinated the militants, was killed. And on a tip, received as if from the closest circle.

And here we can speculate about the possible betrayal on the part of the one who benefited the most from the death of the drug lord, his stepson Juan Carlos Gonzalez Valencia, nicknamed El 03. Even regional militants, recording video messages to the deceased El Mencho, periodically recommended that they trust their stepson less.

According to industry figures, it was he who in recent years has been able to put his people in charge of the cartel's power centers on the periphery. El 03 handled most of the cases from which the drug lord himself had already partially withdrawn, and it was he who maintained agreements with the authorities of the state of Jalisco, for example, on the observance of a truce during the World Cup matches. With the very authorities who suddenly violated the agreement with the organized criminal group and helped the feds arrange everything.

And what's next?

The likelihood of betrayal can be understood in the coming days: if the chaos in the municipalities of Jalisco and the surrounding area can be resolved unrealistically quickly, then most likely this is exactly what happened. In this case, violent actions in the territories of the cartel are aimed at demonstrating the transfer of authority within the organized criminal group, as well as the willingness to resist those who would like to encroach on the cartel, which has remained without a leader.

As for the government of Mexico and Washington, they are quite satisfied with this state of affairs: El Mencho was a personal enemy of Omar Garcia Harfuch, the head of the security cabinet of Claudia Sheinbaum, he tried to kill him more than once and would definitely not have gone to negotiations, and the White House would be quite satisfied with the murder of a media criminal carried out during the presidency of Donald Trump.

Initially, no one was going to fight the drug trade, which feeds all the designated persons (directly or indirectly).
