T.I. Taking His Daughter for Hymen Tests Is a Violation of Her Privacy

In this op-ed, Teen Vogue's identity editor Brittney McNamara explains why T.I.'s daughter being subjected to hymen checks is a violation of her privacy, and an enforcement of outdated patriarchal standards that exist to control women.
There are many ways society shames women and girls, and sexuality is right there at the top of the list. Rapper T.I. put that on clear display when he recently said on the podcast Ladies Like Us that he takes his daughter to the gynecologist every year to see whether her hymen is intact as a way to test whether she's had sex.
When asked whether he's talked with his children about sex, T.I. said on the podcast that he has, and that he accompanies his 18-year-old daughter to the gynecologist to see if she's had it. During these annual gynecological trips, T.I. said he asks the doctor to check his daughter's hymen to see if it's intact, which to him signifies if she's had sex or not.
"This is what we do. Right after the birthday we celebrate,” he said. “Usually like the day after the party she’s enjoying her gifts. I put a sticky note on the door: ‘Gyno. Tomorrow. 9:30.’ So we’ll go and sit down and the doctor will come and talk and the doctor’s maintaining a high level of professionalism. He’s like, ‘You know sir, I have to, in order to share information’ — I’m like ... 'they want you to sign this so we can share information. Is there anything you wouldn’t want me to know? See doc? No problem.’"
There are a few problems with this approach — aside from it being pretty gross. One is that the hymen's condition is not an apt indicator of whether or not someone has had sex, as it can tear during many activities that aren't penetrative sex. The other is that T.I. seems to be exercising the same kind of thinking that enforces a man's control over a woman's body and sexuality, ignoring her bodily autonomy and choice.
Let's tackle the science of it all first. The hymen is a thin membrane located just inside the opening of the vagina. While a very small number of people are born with a hymen that's completely closed up, most people have a small opening in their hymen already to allow things like menstrual blood through. Some people are born without a hymen at all. Many things aside from penetrative sex can "tear" a person's hymen, including horseback riding, tampon use, gymnastics, bike riding, or masturbation. T.I. admitted that when he brings his daughter to these checkups, the doctor tells him as such, but he chooses to ignore that.
"And so then they come and say, ‘Well, I just want you to know that there are other ways besides sex that the hymen can be broken like bike riding, athletics, horseback riding, and just other forms of athletic physical activity,'" he said. "So I say, ‘Look, Doc, she don’t ride no horses, she don’t ride no bike, she don’t play no sports. Just check the hymen, please, and give me back my results expeditiously.'"
In fact, there is no way to test whether or not someone is a virgin, largely because virginity is a social construct, and it is not a medical or scientific term or necessity.
T.I's willful ignorance of science is the least of the problem. The larger issue is that he seems to be playing into an outdated standard that puts men in control over women's bodies, defining their value in relation to whether or not they've had sex.
The way we treat girls and women having sex in the United States is laden with shame. Students in 29 states are taught sex education that stresses abstinence, and students in 19 states are taught that they shouldn't have sex outside the confines of marriage, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Often, people — girls specifically — who do have sex before marriage are compared to things like chewed gum: the analogy goes that you can't unchew a piece of gum, and once it's chewed it's ruined for everyone else. We talk about girls "losing" their virginity, or "giving it up" to someone, automatically putting them in a position of having a piece of themselves taken away. T.I.'s insistence on his daughter's virginity is the continuation of a patriarchal standard that determines women and girls' worth based on their so-called "purity."
In fact, having had sex says nothing about your character, and it doesn't make you any less worthy of anything. Sex is not a moral fault, it's a natural thing that most humans do, and marriage makes it no more legitimate. The World Health Organization, United Nations Human Rights, and United Nations Women said as much when they teamed up last year to put out an interagency report condemning virginity testing across the globe, calling it a human rights violation.
"[Virginity testing] further reinforces socio-cultural norms that perpetuate women’s inequality, including stereotyped views of female morality and sexuality, and serves to exercise control over women and girls," the report says. "Virginity testing violates well-established human rights, such as the right to be protected from discrimination based on sex; the right to life, liberty and security of person (including physical integrity); the right to the highest attainable standard of health; and the rights of the child (when performed on a girl aged under 18 years)."
The report goes on to note that virginity testing can be painful and humiliating, all for a test that has no medical or scientific basis.
We don't know how his daughter feels about her father taking her to do this, nor do we imagine that she's thrilled that people are talking about this facet of her life on the internet. The point is that any girl's sexual history, or lack thereof, is not her father's business, nor his story to tell. No girl should be subjected to forcible tests that are seemingly meant to determine her value or integrity. Rather than bringing his daughter to do something that numerous world agencies have called a human rights violation, T.I. might better serve himself and his children by being more educated on sexual health, and empowering his children to make safe, healthy decisions that are right for them.
Some might argue that T.I. is trying to protect his daughter, something that's understandable for any parent to want to do. But it's unrealistic to think that young people don't have or desire sex, and it's a violation of privacy and bodily autonomy to subject someone to a physical exam to try to prove that they haven't. This kind of fear-based enforcement (because what happens if you fail the test?) isn't productive. Protecting your children could also come in the form of harm reduction, like teaching them how to use condoms and birth control, and what consent means.
That's the problem with this narrow focus on virginity. Policing someone's sexual activity, perhaps before they've even engaged in it, doesn't set them up for consensual, pleasurable experiences in the future. Instead, it creates a sense of shame and fear around sexuality, positioning it as something to be exercised in secret. If we aren't taught about our own bodies and we don't figure out what we like on our own, it makes us more vulnerable to bad — and even non-consensual — sexual experiences in the future. It doesn't seem too much to ask that we imagine more for girls and women, empowering and allowing them to make their own sexual decisions. This involves recognizing that our sexuality exists outside the realm of a man — and certainly outside the control of our fathers.

I.N.S.T.I.G.A.T.O.R. is a former student of the H.I.V.E. Academy and an enemy of the Teen Titans.
The exact origin of I.N.S.T.I.G.A.T.O.R. is unclear, but at some point he was recruited as a student into the H.I.V.E. Academy. Cyborg later infiltrated the institute to discern the latest plans of its then-current headmaster, Brother Blood; in the wake of the resulting conflict the academy was destroyed and most of its students, including I.N.S.T.I.G.A.T.O.R., went freelance.
At some later point of time, I.N.S.T.I.G.A.T.O.R. was recruited into the Brotherhood of Evil and participated, along with Steamroller, in the capture of Thunder, in which they succeeded. When the Titans mounted a final assault on the Brotherhood's base, I.N.S.T.I.G.A.T.O.R. fought against Hot Spot and when the firy Titan launched a flame blast, the mechanical villain was defeated and ended up flash-frozen along with the majority of the assembled villains.
I.N.S.T.I.G.A.T.O.R. appears to be either a merging of human and robot or a sentient robot; his exact nature remains unexplained. Owing to his robotic systems, he possesses superhuman strength and resilience. Since he is a robot, he may possess some amount of knowledge in robotics and technology. His exact fighting prowess wasn't seen, but when capturing Thunder, he was able to stretch his arm.
