"Sübyan" kelimesi çocuklar anlamına gelir. Subyanlık -daha doğrusu ümmü subyan- ise, çocuklara bir çeşit cinlerin musallat olma hastalığıdır. Şuna dikkat etmek gerekir ki, eskiden tıp bilimi gelişmemiş olduğundan, çocuklarda meydana gelen bazı psikolojik veya biyolojik rahatsızlıkları da rahatlıkla sübyan olarak adlandırabiliyorlardı.
