8Yd pleating conundrum! Hi all! Hoping to get some input here on my kilt project. Here's the rub; Maple leaf tartan, I'm pleating it with 1" pleats showing on the outside, with the pleat just covering the bright red squares so that they "flash" as the kilt moves and sways. The goal was 21 pleats.

The Traditional Knife Pleat which we see in most kilts dates back to 1853 with the Gordon Highlanders. The Tailored Kilt came after the 1790s. The first of these was the Box Pleated Kilt worn by the the military in the 1790s. These were pleated to stripe. Pleated to sett came later which led to the need to use more tartan. The origins of the Kinguissie Pleat and such like are a mystery.

I think that there are other features distinguishing kilts from most skirts. Especially that kilts are open in the front. My idea is that the kilt would retain some pleats, those on the sides, and the back would be flat. I would have the kilt probably not from wool to lower the price and have machine-washability.

There's a number of ways to pleat up tartan into tailored kilts. A distinctive pleating method which applies specifically to regimental kilts is the military box pleat. Not to be confused with the 5 yard box pleat kilts widely worn throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries, the military box pleat is an advanced kiltmaking skill.
