Two days ago Linda Boreman, a 53-year-old woman, died in a Denver hospital from injuries she suffered in a road accident. Her death would have made little impact except for the fact that she had another name which was famous throughout the world.
In 1972 Boreman, then known as Linda Lovelace, starred in Deep Throat, a sex epic which went on to be one of the most profitable films ever made.
It was also a pivotal moment in post-war permissiveness. Costing £15,000 to make, it has so far grossed more than £500 million and counting.
There had never been a porn film like it and its success inspired dozens of imitators, creating the backbone of the multi-billionpound porn industry which flourishes today. Yet the film's profit is one of the least remarkable aspects of Deep Throat's legacy.
Lovelace, born the daughter of a traffic policeman in the Bronx, New York, played a character with a clitoris in her throat that gave her an insatiable desire for oral sex. But she was not just a porn star.
She was also a cultural cruise missile who blew open the Pandora's box of pornography, making filth fashionable and giving birth to the sex-soaked culture that now pervades the internet and satellite television.
Not that she had this intention. Indeed, Lovelace has always contended that her appearance in Deep Throat was forced on her by her first husband, Chuck Traynor, at the point of a gun.
Instead it was the liberal culture of America's academic Left which really gave the film its opportunity to pave the way for the millions of porn sites which now pollute the internet.
From the outset, Deep Throat was seized upon by artists and intellectuals as a radical attack on the comparatively constrained sexual morality of the early 1970s, when prosecutions of film-makers and magazine publishers who dared to publish sexually explicit material were far more frequent.
It was commonplace for the movie to be shown at university film societies and small art cinemas which were happy to risk prosecution because their patrons believed Deep Throat could be used as a rallying cry for a new era of sexual freedom and promiscuity.
William Walton, the late composer who wrote music for the Queen's coronation, sneaked away from a performance of one of his choral pieces at an Oxford college to watch Deep Throat at an art cinema.
In fact, the film and the industry it spawned would destroy the gullible woman who starred in it.
As its popularity spread, Hugh Hefner, publisher of Playboy, moved Lovelace and Traynor into his Playboy mansion where they became stars at his parties.
Hollywood celebrities, directors and other cultural icons would seek out Lovelace to praise her contribution to 'sexual freedom.'
By 1974 the film had cult status and its acceptability in the social mainstream encouraged other pornographers.
With 18 months there were more porn films in production than ever before and it had become fashionable for porn to be shown at society parties or gatherings of radical intellectuals.
All this hype was based on the proposition that Deep Throat had some intrinsic cultural merits because it displayed a world in which men and women did whatever their desires suggested.
The undercurrent was that everybody would be happier if they could live like Linda Lovelace. Naturally the reality was different, more shocking and far more disturbing for those who claimed Deep Throat was an act of revolutionary subversion.
When Lovelace herself later came forward to tell the true story behind Deep Throat, she revealed a tale of brutality and drug use that would now be familiar to anyone who has taken even the slightest glimpse into the seedy world of pornography.
Ironically, given the manner of her death, Lovelace met Traynor, her Svengali, only because of a road accident in 1970 in which she was injured. She had started a boutique in New York State which she had to close after the accident, and, at 20, moved back to live with her parents in Florida.
While living there she met Traynor who drove a Jaguar and owned a bar. He had seen her sunbathing at a swimming pool and pursued her with great ardour, showering her with gifts, money and drinks.
Until then her life had been about pretty dresses, roller-skating and ballet. She dreamed of being an air stewardess or a nurse.
After their marriage in 1972, Traynor introduced her to drugs, especially cocaine and marijuana, and before long he was filming her having sex.
He showed the film to Gerard Damiano, a porn producer, and days later she was in a Florida motel making Deep Throat.
In her autobiography, Lovelace described the price she paid, one that has subsequently become familiar to hundreds of young girls who have been lured into the porn industry she helped create: 'I was bruised, they had to cover my legs with make-up.
'Chuck kept a gun in his pocket and would click the trigger, letting me know what would happen if I did not look convincing. For years afterwards I would have nightmares about the fear I felt when I heard that clicking.'
After Deep Throat, Traynor would force her to have sex with him and his friends. He had her hooked on drugs by then and would deny her a 'fix' unless she did exactly what he wanted, which was often to perform her signature sex act from the film on wealthy strangers.
Traynor kept Lovelace on a short leash for months after Deep Throat began to win international esteem. The more the liberal establishment lauded the film and helped drag it into the mainstream, the more Traynor realised he had a golden goose.
Lovelace said she was forced to dress in skimpy clothes as Traynor paraded her everywhere from Las Vegas to Ascot. He persuaded her to have breast implants. But as the money rolled in he began to give her more freedom.
One night, in Las Vegas in 1973, Lovelace made her escape from a theatre where she was due to appear, donning a wig and diving into the back seat of a car belonging to a friend, who spent the next month driving her from one hotel to another as Traynor pursued her with death threats.
Lovelace then disappeared from the public eye until the feminist backlash against the 'sexual revolution' began in the late Seventies.
By then, women like Germaine Greer were beginning to see that pornography was not liberating, neither for the women who acted in the films nor for those whom men treated badly because they saw Linda Lovelace as a template for how women should behave.
This gave Lovelace her chance to repudiate Deep Throat, which she did with her autobiography Ordeal, published in 1980 after she took lie detector tests to prove to her publisher that the sexual abuse she suffered at Traynor's hands actually happened.
Not that the book or the feminists ever really rescued her from the role she had played with such apparent vigour.
Although she married again, to a builder named Larry Marchiano, and lived quietly in Colorado with her two children, Lovelace was unable to escape her past.
In 1998 she was voted number 34 on the Playboy list of the world's 100 sexiest women of the century, one place higher than Madonna.
But she never financially benefited from her celebrity. She claimed to have been paid nothing for the film that made her a household name and when in later life she contracted hepatitis from a blood transfusion and required a liver transplant, the £100,000 for her medical bills was raised by neighbours.
Dogged by ill health as she was, she nevertheless complained that people still sent her fan mail and asked when she planned to make another Deep Throat.
Today, millions now spend hours viewing pornography on websites which display material that makes Deep Throat look tame. Yet without Linda Lovelace and the way the liberal elite embraced her, it may have taken pornography much longer to force its crude and unedifying way into everyday life.
