This was a really well done film. It hearkens back to old school late 80s monster flicks but, also has a very smart conversation about identity politics on the sly. A young black woman known only as "Sweetheart" must survive on a dessert island and also survive something much more sinister. Kiersey Clemons shines in this and her performance and growth in the role is wonderful. A little bit "Castaway", a little "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and a little bit "Predator" with a subtle underlying nod to looking at intersectional identity politics from a black woman's point of view. Very rare to see.

I found this movie to be boring & way to predictable:/ In my head I was creating a better plot of “what if they did this instead of that - lol ... Almost was thinking what if the big green water monster impregnated the only human left & there ended up being a half human half water monster to deal with 🤷♀️ ... Just wanted more out of this movie 😂

This is a great story line - but right from the start it's a bit confusing as to how the ship wreck occurs. So, lets get into the actual story. The main actress does well with the story line, though her scream is very annoying. The discovery of the camp gives a good twist but the question is "who buried the folks if the monster killed them for food?" Didn't make any sense and then later when she digs up the bodies to use their bones as weapons further confuses the audience. She is suspicious of her two friends when they arrive by raft and questions them on the third member but that twist is never resolved. During the final battle, for some reason she ends up catching the entire island on fire thus destroying all her shade and water sources. The makeup for the "monster" is B rate, sorry just can't get past that "Creature in the Black Lagoon" look.

Compared to the multi-million (near billion) dollar budget for all the comic book movies Sweetheart really does the trick. For location you can't beat what appears to be a small South Pacific and then use creative land and water angle shots to make things interesting. How much CG there is versus man in a monster suit seems minimal but its the slow build up atmosphere with its "Castaway" theme shows what can still be done by creative producing, directing and with competent actors. If only more producer-directors pushed away from the computer screen for their content. I consider the outcome of flare gun shot while trying to attract the passing plane ( anticipation wise predictable) but particularly awesome!

The naysayers almost turned me away, but I'm glad I watched it. I was jumping at the idea of the monster for quite a while before I saw him. Once I saw him, I wasn't afraid. After that, what held my attention was the heroine and how she handled being on a remote island with a monster. Between my shouts of advice during their scenes together and her common sense approach to fighting him, I had a grand old time! I'll definitely be looking for other movies that Kiersey Clemons has been in. She's a very talented young lady.

No plot and the dialog sucked. The best thing I can say about it was the scenery which was tropical and beautiful. The star actress did her best but I suspect the poor script, lack of funding and no real tapestry like background for the story just did her in. Also I suspect she has little knowledge of how to be a STAR!

Subtext slowly unfolds as I watch a young scared but capable young woman fight for survival. Her instincts are good, as well as her natural ability. From her friends I ascertain that she was the omega of the group (pack) spinning dramatic tales for attention. Her friends think this is another tale, but soon find out it is not. Her hero's journey takes her from omega to alpha....as witnessed by her final act at the very end.

I love monster movies and make a point to see as many of them as I can, so this movie looked great just from the synopsis and trailer. The film itself was a bit less great even though I couldn't put my finger on exactly what went wrong for me. The monster is fantastic and the setting makes for a great build-up to the climax at the end but somewhere in between, it lacked substance. I found myself more disinterested in the story and more interested in seeing a clear shot of the creature itself. It is not original in any sense of the word nor does it evoke much emotion but it wasn't a bad movie either.
