SW Borneo is the southeastern promontory of Sundaland the continental core of SE Asia, previously assumed to be the oldest part of Borneo. The rocks in SW Borneo are the Pinoh Metamorphic Group (PMG) and granitoids of the Schwaner batholith .

SW Borneo underwent further autochthonous accretion along its SE margin (ca. 186 Ma and ca. 140 Ma) in a Jurassic Meso-Tethys and Paleo-Pacific supra-subduction zone setting. Our revision locates SW Borneo with other SE Tethysides blocks in Eurasia where accretionary orogens have influenced rises after 200 Ma.
The current tectonic model for Borneo in SE Asia suggests that the SW Borneo block rifted from NW Australia at ca. 190 Ma and drifted across the Tethyan Ocean to collide with Eurasia in the Early Cretaceous. The current tectonic model for Borneo in SE Asia suggests that the SW Borneo block rifted from NW Australia at ca. 190 Ma and drifted across the Tethyan Ocean to collide with Eurasia in the Early Cretaceous. But, the global zircon Hf trend after 200 Ma indicates that circum-Pacific-style accretionary orogens prevail.
Though debatable, we infer the SW Borneo block to be a Sundaland continuation; Semitau shows an affinity for South Cathaysia. Both of the terranes would accrete onto Sundaland during the Indosinian orogeny.

The SW Borneo is commonly considered as a microcontinent that was rifted from Gondwana and accreted to Eurasia continent [17, 31, 37 - 39]. Recent studies on Permo-Triassic granitoids from the SW Borneo suggested that the SW Borneo was in an active continental margin due to the eastward subduction of the Paleo-Tethyan Ocean [19].
SW Borneo is interpreted as a Gondwana-derived continental fragment that rifted from Australia in the Mesozoic, recorded magmatism and metamorphism related to southward subduction along its northern margin in the Cretaceous, and accreted to Sundaland in the Cretaceous (Davies et al., 2014; Hall, 2012; Hall, Clements, & Smyth, 2009).
The provenance characteristics of the northern Borneo sandstones are discussed here based on analysis of detrital modes, heavy minerals, as well as determination of detrital zircon U-Pb ages. Neogene formations including the Meligan and Setap Shale Formations of SW Sabah and the Kudat Formation (Fig. 2) of northern Sabah were also studied.
