“I’m a model, designer, wife and mom . I travel a lot and my husband is a professional musician. It’s not a 9-to-5 deal but you have to figure out a way that works for you.”
Wise words from S usan Holmes McKagan , who is as beautiful today at 42 as she was on the cover of Vogue magazine in 1991 due to her attention to diet and fitness. She exercises five days a week and does both weight training and cardio in the form of machines and classes.
“I like to perform interval training and change things up to shock the muscles and cut out the boredom,” the supermodel says.
Holmes will jump on the elliptical machine for 40 minutes with intervals of three minutes going hard (160 heart rate) and then slow it down for a minute and a half (130 heart rate). She will also join in on the various classes available at the gym, such as Zumba or kick boxing.
“With the instructor there, it’s hard to slack off,” she says with a laugh.
Living in California, Holmes has the opportunity to take advantage of the warmer weather and various mountains and trails located near her home.
One of her inspirations to stay in shape just happens to be her husband Duff McKagan, the bassist of Velvet Revolver and formerly Guns N’ Roses. “He got sober by using the martial arts,” Holmes explains. “Implementing physical training with mind over matter helped him to stay alive.”
When it comes to nutrition, Holmes prefers to eat smaller portions that all contain protein and she will eat limited carbohydrates in the earlier part of the day. She also likes to make nutritional protein drinks by adding chia seeds, maca powder, fresh lemon, ginger, cashews, Brazil nuts, kale or spinach mixed with almond milk. But she warns against using any protein powder on the store shelf.
“I use a low sugar, predigested whey formula,” she says.
Holmes has many things to be proud of in addition to her sexy and fit physique. Her designer swimwear has been worn by a number of celebrities including Heidi Klum, Elle Macpherson, Kate Hudson, Anna Kournikova and Venus Williams, as well as having her designs featured in the recent 50th anniversary Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.
