I used to see her fishing in Fort Lauderdale. The first few times, I didn't realize it was a film star, it was just a lady who liked to fish. Just like all the others along the riverbanks, she would wave to passing boats and greet people walking along the shore. It's what people did when out enjoying a lazy afternoon. I was friends with Billy de Wolfe in the early 60's, when he would have these fabulous Sunday poolside brunches.

Anyway, everyone was watching Rock frolicking in the pool with Aldo Ray, Paul Lynde and Tommy Kirk, but Billy was attempting to dig a hole next to the pool for a new lemon tree his manservant had bought, and which Billy thought was languishing.
Billy was no expert with a shovel, and was having a great deal of difficulty digging a hole. I suppose it's difficult to weild a spade wearing a caftan. But, Billy was never a leading man, probably for good reason. Huffing and puffing and swearing. Dear Paul left his game of Marco Polo with Rock and Aldo, got out of the pool, and tried to help poor Billy.
Dear Paul tried to grab the shovel from the obviously exhausted Billy, when Billy screamed, "PAUL IT'S MY FUCKING SHOVEL! I'LL PLANT MY OWN TREE!"
What was interesting was at that particular Sunday brunch, Judy Garland, Susan Hayward, and Jackie Susann were all at the same table. They all left rather quickly after that, and I always wondered if that had anything to do with Valley Of The Dolls.
