Mini Story: The Last of Us

Ellie’s Journal – Entry #47

The wind howls through the broken buildings of what was once Boston. Snowflakes drift down, settling on rusted cars and overgrown streets. My breath fogs in the cold air as I adjust my backpack, feeling the weight of the last few bullets in my pocket.

Joel walks ahead, his rifle slung over his shoulder. He doesn’t say much these days. Not since Salt Lake City. Not since the Fireflies.

'We keep moving,' he always says.

But moving toward what?

The infected are getting worse. Not just Runners or Clickers—now there are rumors of something new. Something faster. Deadlier.

I tighten my grip on my switchblade. The scar on my arm itches, a reminder of what I am. What I could’ve been.

A distant screech echoes through the ruins. Joel stops, his hand rising in silent warning. I freeze, listening.

Then—footsteps. Not infected. Human.

A voice calls out from the shadows. 'You two look like you’ve seen better days.'

A woman steps into the dim light, her face half-hidden under a frayed hood. She’s armed. Of course she is.

Joel’s fingers twitch near his gun. 'We’re just passing through.'

The woman smirks. 'Aren’t we all?'

I don’t like her. But in this world, trust gets you killed. Or worse.

The woman tilts her head. 'Heard there’s a settlement west of here. Walls. Food. Safety.'

Joel’s eyes narrow. 'Heard that before.'

She shrugs. 'Suit yourself. But winter’s coming. And the infected aren’t the only things hunting.'

A long silence. Then Joel exhales. 'Which way?'

The woman grins. 'Now you’re talking.'

As we follow her into the ruins, I can’t shake the feeling that this is another bad decision.

But in the end, what choice do we have?

We survive.

Because that’s all there is left.
