Suriname's Vice President Debuts as a Professional Soccer Player at the Age of 60
The vice president of Suriname, 60-year-old Ronnie Brunswijk made history by becoming the oldest football player. He was playing in international club competition when he started in Tuesday's 6-0 home loss to Olimpia in the CONCACF League.
Wearing jersey No. 61, in honor of the year of his birth, Ronnie captained his team, Inter Moengotapoe, against Honduras side Olimpia in the first leg of the last 16 at Franklin Essed Stadium in Paramaribo, Suriname.
Suddenly the image went viral on social media, because he was the oldest player to play an international club match. The league is CONCACAF's second tier club competition, as quoted from ESPN, Thursday (23/09/2021).
He played 54 minutes and started attacking alongside his son Damian Brunswijk, who played 29 minutes before being substituted.
Deploying Vice President Ronnie as a player is considered disrespectful
The Honduran media criticized Club Inter's decision to field Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk as a player, and considered it disrespectful.
